Tough color, I know. I have a mauve top that I used to wear with a pair of black pinstripe pants that had a faint mauve line in the pinstripe, ( very subtle...you'd have to look hard to see it) , a winter white jacket and a scarf with shades of pink, mauve, lavender and purple. I think you're right, black sucked the life out of it, but it didn't matter so much because it was on the bottom. I like your ideas, esp. the gray and periwinkle. it's important to experiment!

Yes! I get stuck on colour mixing, and yet I love colour. I have a red skirt, but I started hating it because all I ever wore it with was black. Now, after all the interesting combos I see here, I can imagine lots of new possibilities. It's like opening pandora's box. So thanks for giving me another fun colour combo.

Your post definitely gave me some ideas but half of the stuff is not even in my closet anymore. I have a mauve pair of shoes and have been having the worst time trying to figure out what to pair them with. I'm usually good with this but, its mauve lol...I wish I could see your pics but apparently I have to wait 3 days smh but I am considering the wine or burgundy color, because I have a pair of pants those colors already in my closet, so I'm trying to find what color blouse I should add. I want it to be kind of a night out type of outfit.

My vote is for mauve with navy or grey - but I agree that it's a tough color to work with.

Have you ever heard of the website called "design seeds"? It's an awesome website for exploring color and color combinations. She posts pictures with color combinations next to them and then you can click on the different colors to bring up other pictures with that color in it. It's one of my favorite websites - I have an entire Pinterest board pretty much dedicated to it!

I don't think mauve is even on my radar--I don't do well with blush or paler pinks. You look fantastic in the color though and it looks great with the teal jacket!

Navy can be unexpectedly RIGHT. I have an apple green purse (mentioned sadly in a couple of other comments) that I couldn't figure out how to wear. Then I put it with navy and it was great! I didn't like it with black. The thing is until last year, I didn't wear navy at all. Now I'm realizing that even a very dark navy has interesting possibilities. I love it with your mauve.

My favorite mauve combination is with a milk chocolate bar brown (one that's been left in the heat too long and faded). Sounds weird, I know, but years ago my parents' bedroom was "done" by a decorator in these colors and I've always liked them. It was a soft color scheme and yet at the same time masculine enough for a man's room.

Please show us your other mauve combinations; I especially like the one combined with silver- gray and periwinkle -- it sounds like the colors of an icy dawn.

Your musings on color are so thoughtful and interesting, Day Vies. It's fascinating and true that color is perceived differently in relationship to other colors.

Mauve is one color I shy away from...but you carry it well. The navy combination was a stroke of genius. Navy would seem overpowering, almost masculine, juxtaposed with the dainty lavender...but it's working here!

Asingh -- Do you mean a dark almost luminescent forest green or a brighter (more yellow toned) true green? Green is strange in that it can be warm (yellow toned) or cool (gray -toned)/ I guess I need a visual.

DV, I like the outfit. How Bout pairing the violet trousers with a bottle green top. In my opinion, even a bright shade of green would look nice with the violet trousers.

i like pinks and reds, but have usually stayed away from mauve because it never seemed to work, but i couldn't figure out why. you did a great job putting it into words! thanks.

that being said, while i don't currently own anything mauve, in the past, i have always paired it with navy.

Suz-- I knew I could not possibly be the only person with this problem. All the images I saw in my search had the same color pairings and most looked flat. I can't wait to see your mauve/ navy outfit. The top sounds divine. I will post more pics as I cycle through the outfits I created while birthing this one.

THANK you for this inspiration! And also for helping me feel less alone .

I have a mauve top. It is a really fun style, sort of with its own cummerbund, if that makes any sense. And I really, really like it. I bought it because I thought it would work well for semi-dressy events. It's covered-up, yet subtly sexy, and quite distinctive, yet comfortable because of the fabric, a jersey.

Do I wear it?

NO.

The reason is that I just. can't. find. any way to do it.

I tried it with black, and it was....meh.

I tried it with brown, purple, burgundy....ran into all the problems you describe.

NOW I am going to try it out with my navy pencil skirt and see what I think. Along with some minty accents, perhaps. Stay posted!

And by the way, you look great! I love the booties. You have a terrific footwear collection.

Today I wore some mauve trousers. I had the toughest time trying to make them pop. If you have seen anything of my posts in the past you know that I love color. I love the tension and interplay between them. Imagine shades of sage with a beautiful cherry red – now that’s tension. Just because I love color doesn’t always mean that I need vivid color, hence my attraction to these mauve trousers.

When I think of what to wear with mauve my mind goes immediately to burgundy, shades of brown, purple, wine, plum, pink, cream, and gray. Black I feel sucks the delicate amorphous nature out of the color – some how it looks like a nasty sick looking pink next to black. However this highlights the “problem” with mauve. It’s amorphous. Next to brown it looks pink, next to gray it looks rosy, next to pink it looks purple, next to purple it looks pink. If you can’t nail down the color how can you make it pop with out the pop looking harsh or contrived? By the way, mauve with shades of red or orange look harsh to me.

I did a Google search to determine exactly what other people have done with mauve in the past. I did not care if the image was a shoe, a pillow, or an entire outfit. My internal Rolodex was stuck on dusty gray-toned muddy colors, neutrals, or purple – BORING!

I found a picture of a darling little matchbox it had minty sage green woven in the floral Asian pattern. How fresh is that? I scrolled down a little further and found a shoe in chocolate, teal, and mauve. How cute! By this time I am itching to get to my closet. My favorite combinations:

Mauve, wine, and mint green
Mauve, silver-gray, and periwinkle
Mauve, navy (almost black) and lavender
I ended up wearing: Mauve, blush pink and jewel-toned teal – very cute.

What’s your favorite Mauve color combination?

BTW -- I apologize for the lack of make up.
