Right; charm and grit both! A very fascinating city.

We loved seeing so many museums, too-the newly reopened Reijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Stedelijk Museum (they have a few great Picasso and Chagall pieces that I loved); Anne Frank house. We visited the Amsterdam Dungeon today because we wanted a fun, touristy experience that we'd laugh over. (One of the performers had a big, sweet male rat that made me miss Blinkin and Boo.) The food-particularly the pannekoeks and pastries-has been delish. (We also stopped at Umami for some multi-course Japanese/French influenced food.) We stayed right off Dam Square, perfectly situated for traveling via rail or tram, or strolling into the Red Light District at night.

Overall, just a very fun, relaxing experience after the fast-paced large group tour in Ireland.

Charming is a great word to use for Amsterdam. As is gritty, stylish, sporty, practical, modern and blonde.

Angie, a tough question to answer because we have enjoyed so much. I think our best memories honestly will be the little things, like sitting in a cafe next to a canal with a pint, unwinding and people watching. There is a lot more charm to the city than I expected. I'm so glad we made Amsterdam part of our euro trip!

DH and I are cyclists, but we live in one of those outer midwestern suburbs where the car rules. I often imagine living in a bike friendly city like this! I don't think I could ever ride without a helmet, though. DH has been in two serious crashes, one in which he was struck at 40 mph by a car, and his helmet took a huge hit in both cases. Viva la brain bucket!

This trip sounds truly amazing! What a nice break from the stress of the last year!

Now that is a lot of bikes! I am really interested in their heavy biking culture. I wish my area was more biking friendly. Being near lots of farms, if I don't drive, I'll never get anywhere.

Bkiling in the Nerherlands is a way of life! It's MUCH safer than biking in Seattle because there are bike paths everywhere, and you learn "bike traffic rules". It's also a very flat country - which is condusive to this mode of transport. The country and infrastructure is geared up for this way of life. Few people have cars in the Netherlands, but EVERYONE has a bike. And public transport is excellent too.

What's your favourite part of Amsterdam, Kari? De Bijenkorf is my favourite store there!

Isis, thanks for the video! We are too nervous to bike here in the city (we are right off Dam Square) since it is so crowded; maybe if we were staying or going somewhere a little more off the beaten path, or if we were more experienced city bikers. I'm just happier on a trail, not on the street, and definitely not comfortable without a helmet.

Kari, I loved biking in Amsterdam! Rent a couple bikes and join the locals, it's a wonderful way to join the local scene. The fastest and easiest way to get around.

I loved that bikes had their own cycle paths, separate from pedestrian sidewalks and separate from cars. It's wonderful infrastructure that makes biking much less intimidating, and safer for all.

Here's a cool video about how the Dutch got their cycle paths:

Funny, when I saw your earlier post mentioning you were in Amsterdam, it reminded me of the sea of bikes outside of the central station. Fond memories. I, too wish my city were more bike friendly. My husband bikes nearly every day but I'm too scared, bikers here get no respect and sadly neither do pedestrians on foot.

Enjoy your trip, it sounds so fun and your pics are great. Thanks for sharing!

I knew the Dutch people biked a lot, but I didn't realize the extent of what "a lot" really means. This photo is a tiny taste of how many bikes can be parked in front of a single restaurant or shop. At the central rail station and harbor, there is a tri-level bicycle parking garage that could easily work as a mid-sized lot for cars. Bikes line street corners and canal bridges.

They bike everywhere, sharing tiny narrow streets with two-way vehicle traffic, trams, pedestrians every which way, motor bikes. No one wears a helmet, and a couple passengers (or a dog) may be simply sitting in front of or on the back of a single person bike. The women bike in skirts and dresses, no problem.

B. and I are not biking. I am so scared when I bike in the city; I hate biking next to cars and am nervous about getting side-swiped. Seattle drivers can sometimes be aggressively anti-bike, and I've seen other bicyclists do really stupid things on the road at home. However, Amsterdam makes me wish that Seattle was a little less averse to biking in the city. The locals make it look so easy!
