I was in New York City a few weeks ago -- I spent time in Manhattan, SoHo, Brooklyn, and Queens -- and super distressed/shredded jeans were everywhere on women in their 20s and 30s -- especially with booties / heels and floaty feminine tops. I was with DD who is 23 -- this is not her style -- and so we were in a lot of younger areas ... but I was surprised at how much of this is still around.

Whoa, stillettos at 8 mos preg?! You must have been very practiced! Or must have owned very good shoes!

I really like the bright Nike trainers. I'm considering getting a pair and working it with a blazer. I saw this styled on the Smythe les vests site (neat style ideas on that site!).

So about street style...my town isn't exactly a hotbed for fashion---not even lukewarm bed---and I'm sure many of you are already over many of the trends I'm going to report. But I'll tell you what I see anyway, just for fun :-)

Literally 50% of the population here is in Birkenstocks. It's ridiculous.
I think it's one of those things where everybody over 35 is like, "Oh, I'm so glad these are back in style" and everybody under 35 is like, "those are so fugly, they're cute". Slight edge to the style that goes through the toes, second place goes to the 2-strap version.

Doc boots are here too, with shorts (no thermal underwear with it, but maybe in the fall? ;-)

Levis are back!

I see quite a few jumpers. A lot of dainty jewelry. A lot of navy.

Much less Coach and more Michael Kors.

I don't notice people in suits or dressy stuff!

What a fun read! Thanks for the little journey to Toronto.
I haven't done much people-watching downtown here lately. I people-watch at my local coffee shops, where I tend to focus on outfits I like and want to remember.

Hmm, I need to get out more. One thing I have noticed here in the outskirts lately is that women here love to color their hair and wear heels - and everything in between can go a bit haywire. Next time I am in Tel Aviv I will try to take pictures - completely different crowd.

It could be Anne, although they were fairly fashionable flats for the most part, definitely office-appropriate ... the Nike lady was just my personal fave I was amazed she pulled it off with such panache ... this from the girl who wore stilettos to work until I was 8 months pregnant (at which time I switched to a lower heel, but NEVER a flat) ... ah, how we change over time!!!

I just wondered if some of the flats were being worn by ladies to walk in, and then changed to heels in the office. This is VERY common where I work.

Hey, I was there today, too noticed the white & black theme. As I was walking by the Bay, notices another similar trend - black pants (or jeans) worn with black cami and white shirt. Or may be I noticed it because it's been on my mind? bought black cami, still looking for white one to wear under my mostly white summer tops.

Yes TG Muskoka is very beautiful. The cottagers range from ultra rich to everyday folks. The traffic changes in the summer, the grocery store changes and more stores open up.

Celia, that's interesting, and the weekend part might make a difference? I'm not down there enough to make sweeping statements though; this is just based on a few hours today!

Angie, most definitely the financial district has a lot to do with it; this would be a decidely conservative area of the city, although another favorite style-watching area, Yorkville, also seems to favor neutrals when I go there (black and tan are what I notice). Other areas, such as the Fashion District and some of the more trendy, market-y areas would feature more variations in style and color ... even the business area with more marketing and design agencies has more variation and more business-funky sort of style, with flowier pieces and more color and trends apparent.

I didn't mention that while there was not a lot of color, there was plenty of pattern, especially when pants were worn, and even some pattern-mixing. More graphic prints rather than stripes I would say. And of course once we got to PanAm central, there were plenty of national shirts to be seen!

Thanks, TG. Fun read. Do you think the choice of colour palette was because you were in the financial district of Toronto? Nice hearing about the abundance of flats.

I also love to go downtown but because I usually go there on weekends I get a more colorful scenario, in the same neighborhood you mentioned.
When you talked about the splashes of coral and orange I remember two summers ago I went downtown with DH on a weekday wearing a orange dress. That day it seemed like national orange dress day becausw so many women were wearing an orange dress.
Anyway , Toronto is awesome for people watching. There are so many fabulous outfits passing by.

Wow, Style Fan, you are lucky to live there!! I always find Muskoka a little on the dressy side for cottage country - I am sure even people's casually stuff is very smart (and probably expensive!)

We've been enjoying lots of Ontario this summer - such a beautiful province, and you are in one of its jewels!

Thank you for info on street style in Toronto. I love going to Toronto and checking out what people are wearing. Actually I love most big cities as a visitor. Montreal is probably one of my favourites. We go there a lot.

Street style in Muskoka which is where I live is hard to explain. The huge influx of visitors in the summer dress very casually. I have noticed a lot of distressed shorts, Birks, Lululemon, maxi dresses and skirts, jean jackets, flip flops and very little make up. Of course the visitors are on vacation.

Had a great day with the kids today taking in some of the Pan Am Games activities in my beloved Toronto. One of my favorite bits of going downtown is taking in the street style. Toronto is a large city with lots of diverse neighbourhoods, but we were essentially in the financial district and city hall area, a relatively conservative and "well-heeled" area. Lots of white-collar workers flitting about. Here's what I noticed:

Thank goodness I broke my Project 333 again in favor of black and white, because these seem to be the only colors people were wearing. The palette was so ubiquitous that gray, navy and light blue (usually in the form of a man's shirt) read as colorful. There was the very odd splash of coral-y orange, as well as a beautiful, rich, deep berry red (the red generally paired with black and white). Most people looked great, a tribute to the power of black and white!

Looks were generally tailored (as one would expect with business wear); however, there were some flippy skirts that looked really pretty; lots of smart shirt-dressed too. Lots of high-waisted pencil skirts too. Not so many pants on women, now that I think of it.

Flats seem to win the day with women; one well-dressed lady even had gray Nike trainers on a la Working Girl, and I thought it actually looked alright! (have I lost it?)

Hair, bags and accessories were sleek and minimal and generally obvious-label-free, very polished and professional, but not dull. I was happy to chat with a stylish (if I do say so) Torontonian who was wearing the same Stella & Dot pendant I had on!

I now feel that I understand the origin of my color propensities and style preferences - I realize they are often decidedly "Toronto core casual", probably because I spent so many years working and going out on the town in that area! So fun to observe and enjoy.

What street style are you enjoying lately?

PS - sorry I didn't snap any photos; was with the kids so both hands were in use shuttling them through the bustle.
