I let go of almost everything I’d been hanging on to a couple of years ago when we moved - I’m short on space and I get overwhelmed when I have a lot of clothes or just stuff in general. I don’t miss anything I’ve given away - with the exception of photos or personal letters, I’m not keen on keeping anything I can’t use. I stubbornly keep several pieces my mom bought me when we shopped together, even though I don’t wear them anymore (she passed away nearly 11 years ago). I feel some regret for giving it up and crazy hope that maybe I could still fit in them now. I think you can keep such items for a while until you are ready to move on or if you feel displeasure of imagining anyone wearing them ( or some other reason purely your own ). Last autumn I edited sentimental garments out of my closet since I felt like I had crossed a line of some sort with a series of lifestyle changes, and I’m in a very forward looking mood. Fortunately, it's not a huge undertaking. I was trying on a beloved dress with sentimental meaning. TBH, it was a little too tight and short for my comfort level. On the other hand, I'm having a hard time letting it go.&nbsp; Am I keeping the dress not because it is desirable, but perhaps discarding it is undesirable?&nbsp; Of course, it's more socially and environmentally responsible to limit how much garbage I create by holding on to things.&nbsp; If I am to commit to culling the closet, I guess I will have to remove meaning from the dress (and other items) in order to learn live without the reassurance of its presence. </p>
