These are excellent thoughts and I look forward to your Year of Pink! You've definitely dialed in on a shade that loves you.

Like LaPed I was nodding along especially with your goal to "put as much effort into choosing a well-fitting, decent quality sweatshirt as I would a blouse or dress."

I also very much relate to your love of subtle finishing touches to add a bit of pretty. I find that these details don't always come through very well/clearly in photographs, but they add a high happiness factor for me in real life. I enjoy typing on the computer and seeing my heirloom rings out of the corner of my eye, or pulling my feet up underneath me and catching a glimpse of fair isle socks. I have never quite agreed with people who say that they want to be able to "get dressed and then forget about my outfit." I don't want my clothes to be fussy or uncomfortable of course but I like when my outfit provides little hits of sensory pleasure throughout the day. :-)

Nodding along with all of this, even though my descriptors would be different from yours! In total agreement with this sentiment: "put as much effort into choosing a well-fitting, decent quality sweatshirt as I would a blouse or dress." As soon as I started taking my gear and casual wear (even loungewear!) seriously, I immediately felt so much better about getting dressed (or not ).

Very cute specs -- those translucent frames tick off the fun, pretty, and current boxes!

I like those!
I have avoided actually writing down “practical “ because part of me still yearns for some of the fabrics , styles and …shoes! that were part of my professional life. I think the pandemic played a role because I could not fully embrace or develop the new interests & activities of retirement that would be rewarding , and from which the more practical wardrobe would develop organically and in a supportive way. I’m not counting the pandemic phase of comforting schlubby clothes!!

But I’m feeling 2024 will indeed be more of a re-set year for me even though the worst of the pandemic has been receding for awhile now.

Despite needing “ practical “, I haven’t thrown out some cashmere sweaters, or merino sweaters. We get a few months of cold weather and I find them warm! But have been trying to put them their paces as to comfort, style and fit— no room for being even a bit “ off”—versatility, which ones I reach for. Which ones are benchwarmers.

I bought the Wit& Wisdom wide leg trousers with practicality in mind. Not for wearing around the house, though I could. But for non-jean, non-Athleisure occasions because belted trousers are my thing, but these are machine washable, have a slight stretch. And the “ plaid” is versatile. It is generally gray on black but I discovered it has other tones in it, so it works with taupe and beiges as well. Hence versatile, which is also “ practical “, because I don’t need a wardrobe full of this style, and want to be able to shop my closet for different looks.

PS - Those glasses are fab on you too. Makes sense to invest just as much effort into your everyday wardrobe if that's what you spent most of your time wearing anyway!

Rachy lol ... a little anger is the perfect foil for clouds and sheep :D

CG yes indeed - the more I look around the more I see practical, practical, practical and I am here for it ... but it starts to feel heavy and a little pretty gives it a nice lift, even if it's just a simple touch like a light colour or a dab of gloss.

Lyn, that is very, very kind of your to say; thank you x

I am here for you in more pink!Love the specs on you too. Yes adding pretty to practical is a good way to go when let’s face it most of us are in practical every day so why not prettify it.l have quite a functional wardrobe but it can get abit boring unless it’s brightened/Prettified somehow.

I totally see this. These words really hit key points for your style and say you. And, lol, I’m thinking my words need to be ‘practical, angry and pretty’. Lol, the angry is just to remind me not to go all-in on sweet - ‘cuz I come off as ‘clouds and sheep’ enough as it is

Thank you so much everyone!

Suz, you nailed it with this: "

So much of style is about self-knowledge and acceptance, right? Acceptance of our conditions, lifestyle, stage of life -- and also our inner needs." ... trying to live this in style and life! x

Carla, my colour of the year is navy/ink primarily for it's symbolic value. I see pink (and pretty) as more of a valuable accent rather than a foundational piece - if that makes sense!

Hi all, bit of a navel-gaze post but I've been toying around with my style descriptors and feel I have landed on a refreshed set of words to direct my shopping for the next while.

Practical, polished, pretty (triple P!)

Practical: This is my foundation and will really direct what pieces I purchase (and importantly, if I buy!). To me, this is about buying for my real, post-pandemic, post-menopausal, work from home, uber casual lifestyle. Which means jeans are now dressy, gear is every day, and dressy things are almost never needed!

Polished: This will direct what specific version of a practical piece I choose. This is second nature to me, I don't have much if any RATE sensibility, but I see the word functioning as a reminder to put as much effort into choosing a well-fitting, decent quality sweatshirt as I would a blouse or dress.

Pretty: This is something I want to focus on a little more, and it really comes down to a few subtle finishing touches. To me 'pretty' is something like, "aspects that are aesthetically pleasing in a light or delicate way, that are not strictly necessary." This stands in juxtaposition to practical, and I think that will help me not get bored or feel 'meh' or clunky in my practical items. Pretty for me could be as simple as my sheer pink nail polish, remembering to refresh my lip gloss through the day, and adding a few bits of jewellery every day (which I'm generally good at, but it's the first thing to fall off when I get busy or distracted). Also, because I've done a good job at replenishing my essentials in neutral colours, I will "think pink" for future practical pieces if a shade jumps out at me in the right piece, such as an additional deep winter weather sweatshirt or warm scarf, or summer basic tank or tee in a rosy hue. Pink makes me happy!

I don't think this will result in a particularly different look for me, but I think these words are a little more aligned with my current mood and will enable more ease in terms of decision-making and adding some organized-emotional direction to my style this year.

Thanks for reading! Have you switched up your style descriptors recently? Was it a drastic change or a small refinement?

Photo: A keep-it-real version of this formula -

practical, warm sweater and flared leggings and UGG slippers

polished, everything fits well, a tuck to keep the sweater neat, neat ponytail (if you ignore my roots!)

pretty, pink sweater (reads brighter in the photo than irl), small gold hoops and gold Claddagh ring, clear frames, pink lip gloss and blush, sheer pink mani
