I'm in my early 50s. I find most mulitvitamin tablets make me gag - and often nauseous as well. I've recently discovered Smarty Pants, out of California. Here's a link to their site http://smartypantsvitamins.com/
Just started taking them and I can attest to the great taste.

I take a prenatal, but lower dosage - simply because I've never found one I like better. The ones I take are OptiNatal - I buy them from iHerb.com. (And somewhere around here I have a promo code that gets you $5 off your first purchase, I think). Recommended dosage for gestating or lactating women is 6 tabs a day - I take 2 most days.

I don't take a multi - I take specific things, mostly minerals and Omega oils as I eat really well so I think I get the basic vitamins pretty easily. Brands I use include NOW, Pure encapsulations, and Doctor's Best. I got tested for Vit D too - mine was good. All that Texas sunshine. :-)

Louise - I wouldn't think you'd want to just take an iron supplement to "be able to give blood." For one thing, it seems it would skew the test for several days after and show that you had enough iron even though your ferritin could be dangerously low. Coming from someone who's had their ferritin very low before.

I should specify that I don't eat on a regular basis, especially with my work schedule, and was feeling really laggy and draggy without my multivitamin. I started taking one in 4th year of medical school, and added on the Vitamin D when I tested quite low. I wasn't too surprised - I'm pretty sure I didn't get a tan in 3rd and 4th year of medical school (I usually tan pretty easily) because I never was able to go outside during daylight hours!

I take 1000 IU of Vitamin D in addition to the stuff in the prenatal, so I think I round out at about 1400 or 1600 IU.

I take the prenatal because I'm lactose intolerant and apparently it has more good stuff in it for young people. "AND IF YOU EVER GET PREGNANT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE WORRIED" said the very cheerful and overly enthusiastic young medical resident who suggested it at my doctor's office. Wanted to punch her in the face (had recently broken up at that time).

I take a Centrum and recently started an extra 1000 IU of D3 for a total of 1800 D3, still considered safe and not extreme. The only vitamin I have been advised to take was the D3, but I have been taking a Centrum for years so will continue.

I agree we should get all our nutrients from food, but the reality may be different. Interestingly, several specialists have strongly recommended the D3 for a family member who has had cancer in the past.

I take a prenatal and have for years. I buy it from Amazon.

I am also deficient on calcium, so I take calcium citrate and vitamin D to help absorb it.

When I was beyond tired in my first trimester, the doctor recommended vitamin B complex to see if it would help. It did a bit, but it really helped DH who started taking it at the same time.

Blood tests said my calcium level was fine but not my Vitamin D which enables the body to use the calcium. Dr. said most in Nor Cal (or maybe northern hemisphere?) don't get enough Vitamin D due to the level of sun and wearing sunscreen so he advised taking a supplement and said what was in any multivitamin was sufficient.

I've taken multi-vitamins + minerals most of my adult life. I've tried going without and I end up lacking energy. I've tried iron alone and that isn't it, so I keep taking them and try to eat a healthy diet. There is something I don't get enough of with diet alone, and I'd admit that it could all be in my head, so I keep taking them. This last year I have added B-12 and D3 because I've done a lot of reading and found out older people can be deficient because their digestion doesn't work as well. DH was having some problems (and he's had major surgery which took out a bit of his intestine) so I've been reading a lot. His doctor can't figure out what was wrong, but after more than a year of taking B-12 he's feeling better. (He didn't test low. I haven't been tested--keep forgetting to ask.)

I like Centrum and used to take the Long's generic too, but since CVS took over I find I don't like so many of their products that I stick to name brands. I'm careful to make certain that I don't take more than the maximum suggested amount.

I've gone through all kinds of fads through the years. Remember C and then B-6 for women, which turned out to be dangerous for some? I used to take a lot of Brewer's yeast and can't remember why I stopped. When I was suffering with migraines I took vitamin packs I bought from my MD. (They didn't help, but menopause revealed the headaches were hormonal.)

Larinda I've read that some older people don't absorb enough of the right kind of D through sun exposure. And since I've got problems with pre-cancers, I avoid the sun.

In the US the FDA requires that vitamins (and all "dietary supplements") meet minimum standards for Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), so I do not worry too much about the brand name. In general I trust Kirkland brand products from Costco.

I take only D3 and B12 since I test low for each of these. As with any health issue YMMV, but there is some suggestion that Vit D deficiency is associated with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

I took a once a day multi vitamin for several years and I came to the conclusion that it made me nauseous! I suffered with terrible nausea after eating certain foods and it was only when I stopped taking it because I ran out and didn't get round to replacing that I concluded it was the vitamins causing the reaction! I occasionally take vitamin D as I was found to be low on that and sometimes iron tabs around the time that I donate blood as a couple of times my iron levels have been borderline so was only just able to donate. I guess though to answer your original question I'd be guided by vitamin levels in the tablets rather than brand x
