I'd wait a good six to eight weeks for each lobe piercing, and much longer for a cartilage piercing. Cartilage does not have a direct blood supply, so takes FOREVER to heal fully (and the risk of infection is much higher, even if you take good care of it).

Try not to touch fresh piercings with your fingers, unless they are just washed. Keeping your hair away from them helps too, if possible. What DonnaF says is true. You may well not get an infection, but if you do, it can be very serious, very quickly. And even if you don't lose your life, it could leave your ear mutilated. Sometimes, after the ear swells up dangerously, the cartilage somehow gets attacked and can be destroyed, leaving you with half an ear. :-(

Having said that, I currently have five ear piercings, all of which have small but chunky silver rings in them. I've had up to seven, but a couple have grown in. I never did adjust to the one cartilage piercing I had (in my early 20s); I found it uncomfortable to sleep on, even after it was fully healed, and even with a ring, not a stud, in it. After a year or so, I let it grow in. Same with the only body piercing I've ever had -- that one never healed properly, which was my own fault because I let a friend do it with a suture needle from the animal lab. (Don't do that!)

Thistle, you make me chuckle... too old! :D

I'm over 40, have 9 piercings in my right ear, 5 in my left. Love them all! Arya's is spot on. Is there anything specific you're after as far as thoughts or advice?

Personally I keep CBRs in the majority of my piercings. I find them easy to deal with and really don't have the desire to change them out regularly. One of my piercings is a "rook", and so I just leave a bar in there. The only ones I really change are my oldest lobe piercings.

The nice thing about piercings is that they are easily removed if you ever decide you don't care for them.

I am probably too old to comment, so take this from someone who is closing in on 40.

If you are looking for bling, arm candy, arm cuffs, even ear cuffs could get that for you without having the permanency of a piercing. A statement necklace can do a lot as well.

I work in a conservative office, and anything more than wearing a single piercing in your ear is frowned on. I know at least one of the young ladies was having issues with a piercing because she could not wear it at work.

If you really want it, though, the others have posted s lot of good ideas.

Do you have any cartilage piercings? They are completely different from the ones in the earlobe. When I was younger, I foolishly went to Claire's and got my cartilage pierced. I was lucky that I quickly realized it was infected and was able to get it cleared up. A few years later, I went and had it done again by a professional in a tattoo shop and that one has had no infection problems. the annoyances I've noticed with it were:

1) I couldn't sleep on that side of my head for the first month
2) I've had a couple of hairdressers almost yank it out of my ear
3) it's a pain in the bum trying to change the earring and
4) you can't change the earring for the first 6 months

If you just want bling, look into getting an earcuff. You'll be able to get the bling now without having to wait .

I guess I'm just not a fan of the row of earrings, which is of course entirely a personal preference. If bling is what you're after, how about statement necklaces or the currently-hot stacks of arm candy?

Cartilage piercings can indeed be risky and infection can occur in weird, unexpected ways. I know a young woman who cracked her collarbone while horsing around with (I think) young cousins. Bacteria entered through the ear piercing, settled on the collarbone, then went septic. The infection set in with horrifying rapidity and she was rushed to the hospital where they caught it just in time, and thankfully she lived. Had she not been a healthy youngish teen still living at home with sharp-eyed parents, I fear that she wouldn't have made it. The risks are not an urban/internet myth.

Can you get ***bling*** from ear cuffs?

I have seven in my left ear and two in my right. I *highly* recommend you avoid doing multiple cartilage piercings at once. Also, keep in mind which ear you tend to hold your phone up against the most...and consider the piercings for the other ear. Squashed fresh piercings are painful.

Last but not least, as you may already know since you have multiple piercings in each ear - go to a proper piercing professional and NOT the teenager who works at Claire's in the mall! Those piercing guns are foul and dangerous. A professional will do it by hand with autoclaved instruments and teach you how to properly care for the healing tissue. If you go into cartilage, it takes a lot longer to heal and needs more TLC than just some antiseptic on a cotton ball.

I guess it depends on where in your ear you're talking about. If you just mean continuing on up the ear i've found/seen that when you start to get into that cartilage i can really take a long time to heal and one of my friend's entire ear was bright purple for a long time.

I would also recommend not doing them all at once if they are going to be next to each other. I did this as a teenager and i think it's easier for the spacing to get messed up, makes the healing process a lot longer/ trickier etc.

Good luck!
