I have them. Only use them for sport as they are useless for reading. Need reading glasses with them. My optometrist said they are good for two ranges of vision, not three, so picked middle and far, and only wear them in the dojo. I put my glasses on for a class once and the wee kids had a hard time with the stranger for a few minutes.
So, of limited use, but good for specific applications?

So much wisdom here! Sounds like it is worth trying a few more contacts to see if they will work. My optometrist warned me that it might take a couple tries (and that it may not work at the end).

Tonight I lost one of my trial contacts, so its back to the drugstore readers till after Thanksgiving when I have my next appointment.

Jonesy, I had no idea progressive spectacles could be so $$$! I think I'll stick with the drugstore readers if I can't get the contacts to work!

Mo, it seems like if he already has one contact for close-up, and yet he can't read, then that prescription is wrong? I don't wear the multifocal lenses, but I still went back and forth to the optometrist 3x or so to get the right combination of prescriptions for both lenses. But then again, my close-up vision is fine without any correction (when I am doing lots of reading, like reading the paper in the morning, or reading for work, I don't wear any sort of correction), so maybe his issues are more challenging for the optometrist in terms of finding the right close-up prescription that is compatible with the distance correction for the other one?

I haven't tried the multifocals. I have astigmatism in both eyes and I responded well to the unifocals, so maybe the optometrist was satisfied and left it at that!

They work to a degree for me. Nothing works perfectly for me (not even my progressive spectacles). I have strong myopia (i.e. need a low vision lens in one eye); plus astigmatism (thankfully, mild), plus now I need reading glasses as well.

What I have is a sort of combination. Both are progressive lenses, but one eye is corrected more for distance and one is corrected more for close up. It works for me as long as lighting is adequate. If lighting is poor, I need to add my drugstore readers.

It works well enough for distance that I can drive, watch movies, etc. That is because the stronger distance correction is in my dominant eye.

It also works fine for computer use, although like Jonesy I try to wear my glasses more often for that simply because my eyes will dry out if I stare at the screen unblinkingly for too long.

Like MaryK, I had to keep going back for multiple fittings and lenses. The first few I tried didn't work at all.

But if I didn't need glasses for distance wear I think I would rely on drugstore or prescription reading glasses. You can get prescription lenses just for computer use as well.

They didn't work for me I had real balance issues. I kept with them for 3 months but in the end it wasn't worth it for me. My husband loves his.

Isis, I went back to the optometrist every week for more than month before I found the exact right multifocal prescription. Keep trying and don't give up. Also, I wear a weak pair of distance glasses over the contacts for driving. Ask your eye doc about that, and insist if he/she balks!

Jonesy, the BF has the same contact Rx - one for close and one for further away. It works okay but not up close to read. He's blind as a bat otherwise, so that might be part of his trouble. Have you tried the multi-focals?

I have progressive glasses that I wear when I am doing lots of computer work, and unifocal (?) contacts for teaching, going out, etc. Don't know if this is the right term, but I have one contact for up close and one for distance. My vision isn't *perfect* with these, but they generally get the job done for reading menus, driving, etc. For lots of computer usage, I can't wear contacts because my eyes dry out too much. The two different contacts took me less time to get used to (almost no time) than the progressives. Those took about 2 weeks, and each time I've gotten a new pair, it was another 2 weeks of adjustment.

Isis, if your distance vision is great, then maybe readers are your best bet? Versus something more complicated/expensive (my first pair of progressives were almost $1,000, my second pair around $750).

Mo--drugstore reading glasses is what I use to read menus and credit card bills. If he doesn't mind carrying them around, they are handy. Some of the designs aren't bad.

MK--glad to hear you've liked mulitfocal contacts! Do they work for driving as well as reading? I actually have a trial pair and I'm finding that they aren't working for driving---my long distance vision is much worse than my uncorrected vision. This is a tester pair of contacts, and I go in for another appointment next week.....I may play around with another pair as I'm not sure I can live with this amount of blurriness.......

I have the multifocal contacts and although they are not perfect they are the best solution I've found. The recently came out with a new kind that corrects for astygmatism and that has been a great upgrade for me. They don't correct my vision as well as my progressive specs, but the tradeoff of not having to wear glasses is worth having the world be a little soft-focus! (I do wear my specs to the movies or the theatre!)

Mo -- your BF might want to try some low power drugstore reading glasses with his contacts. That's what I did before I got my new improved contacts.

I was hoping you had input! I want my BF to try these. He can either see far away (road signs when driving etc) or up close (reading a menu) but can't do both. He wears glasses most the time, but when he does put in his contacts, I have to read menus to him and credit card receipts on the bill! I sure wish he'd give these a try.

Anybody tried these?

I wear reading glasses and am getting sick of running to get them when I have to see something. I don't need correction for distance, just reading and computer work.....I could try progressive spectacles, but I'm not sure about wearing something on my nose all the time.....

Any solutions?
