Late checking back, sorry!

Beth Ann, thanks. It's funny, I read in another thread of yours that your family lives in 1000 sq ft, so I might be checking in with you on small space solutions and hints! :)

Susie, thanks! I love to record progress on home projects so I will be sure to share some as we go along. Thanks for showing interest.

Thistle, you really summed it up perfectly. I think most of us as Americans at least take space for granted. It wasn't until I moved here that I realized many people don't have the luxury of space I've been accustomed to my whole life. The anecdote you gave was priceless and brought a smile to my face. Sometimes I do take comfort in knowing there are many people around me 24x7. When back home in the US visiting this summer i DID feel lonely in my mom's small town!

Alasee, thanks!

kerry, I struggled with that exact issue for a long time. I want the big house with a big yard, but smack in the city. Doesn't exist here! And if it did, it would be WAY over our price range. So I sacrificed space for location/commute. I am with you - no way I would trade it. I love being at arms reach to anything I want, most of the time without using the car - walking or taking public transport (or a bike!). Internally I battled with this - the American in me wanted the suburban characteristics of a big house and a yard, but I've come to LOVE the urban walking lifestyle. I think we made the right choice. And we are lucky, we have a private roof garden the size of the apartment (it's directly above), so that quenches my need for open space and air and views. Thanks again for weighing in, glad to know there are others out there like me :)

Owning your own home is such a great feeling! I grew up in a small town and a small house but with a large yard. I now live in Toronto where space is such a premium. Our big compromise, when we had our daughter, was not interior space (our townhouse is larger than the house I grew up in) but outdoor space (we only have a deck). Every once in a while I check out the real estate listings in an attempt to find a home with a yard but then always come to the realization that, in Canada, we spend much of the year inside and there are lots of parks close by. I am just not willing to take on more mortgage for a smaller house in need of renovation for more outdoor space! I am also not willing to increase commute times by moving to the suburbs for more space. Time is more important than space, I think!

Congratulations on your home buying. All of your decor choices look super fun and fresh. Hope you continue to have fun as you realize this dream.

Sooo exciting! The kids bedding looks amazing!

I hear you on American expectations of space :) It's not until you are in another country that you really come to understand how much of a luxury it is. I remember when a colleague of mine was here from India. It was his first time in the US, and he couldn't believe how big our yards were or how few people lived in our houses.

I remember him shaking his head as we took him out to our plant in rural Wisconsin, and him asking "Don't you get lonely all by yourselves all the time?"

Keep us posted! I love hearing stories of how others made it work. Reminds me that we *can* have two kids in our 3 bedroom house with its finished basement. (DH has been wanting to move since he had to move his computer to the basement when DD2 got the computer room).

Thanks, Dimity. Ever since I saw the kids bedding I knew it would be mine, haha. Unintentionally got it on sale too. Can't beat that! Glad you like the colors, too. They make me happy and I'm sure the kids will love it, too.

Greycat, thanks. I'm excited to see the progress, too. Will share as things move along.

Sveta, yes! It is such a relief to know it is OURS. Part of what spurred the timing of the purchase was that the owner of the place we rent wants to sell (and the price plus needed renos are way over our budget). Nothing like knowing no one can kick us out.

Caro, thanks! We are so excited to start a new chapter in our family's story. Exciting times for sure.

I am so pleased to share that after many long years of house hunting and saving we've realized the dream of owning our own place.

I've had to adjust my expectations. I grew up in the USA where every house had a yard and green grass, I grew up in a rural area on a 1 acre plot of land with plenty of room to roam, and the town still doesn't even have a traffic light. I now live in one of the biggest cities in the world and after several years I've come to realize if I wanted to own my own home, it was going to be smaller than what I'm used to. I'm coming to terms with that...I'm certain the next month or two will present many challenges to ME more than any other family member but I'm ok with that. I give myself permission to have varied feelings during the downsizing process and I've learned a lot reading online and even from other YLF members that have experienced the same.

We closed a week or so ago. So far I've had fun doing some research and buying. Some of our existing furniture won't fit or doesn't suit the new space so I got to buy a new dining set. Love it! The bar stools we selected are on backorder, boo. I also got new beds and bedding for the kids. I'm a lover of bright colors - my room growing up was black, white and red. My kids will have primary colors (shown below) and I can't wait to get their room setup. Finally, it is OURS and I feel like I can make it my own. Such a great feeling after years of renting.

We have several projects planned, some of which have already begun. Exciting! If anyone shows interest I will post progress pics. We will be finishing part of the roof garden to have a bathroom, home offices and a storage room (for some of that aforementioned furniture). We also plan to have some custom storage built to maximize the space in the condo (aka mommy and daddy have too many shoes, haha). I'm looking forward to living with less and living a more organized life. I hope I can succeed at this goal.

Anyway, I wanted to share my news and excitement with you, my online friends. As always all comments are welcome. Sorry if the pics are out of order, iPad won't let me remove the first photo but I'm sure you get the idea
