Good luck! Have moved many times and it's not my favorite thing! But always happy to arrive at our new place..

My biggest tip when I got overwhelmed was to remember that the packing period is finite. Somehow, the movers will come on moving day, and you'll be DONE...and now ready to unpack. Good luck

Thank you all ladies for your wonderful advice. Yes, having been in the same house for 14 years, it is time for a REALLY good clean out. Will keep going with that.
And it sounds like I will need to get really organised with the boxes, I can see it will get overwhelming otherwise. Thank you for the strategies !

Lucy, I have used moving as an opportunity to get rid of things we really don't want or need. The most recent was a move from Melbourne to Bendigo and then 5 months later a move from one part of Bendigo to another. By the time we had settled into our current place, I was in minimal heaven :)

BTW, Sharon is in Brisbane. You might get find a new shopping buddy :)

For my last move, I numbered all the boxes beforehand (I guesstimated how many I would need), and then I made a master list of the box numbers. I then wrote what went in each numbered box as I was packing. This was such a life saver for me because I very often needed to find something I had already packed away!

I also found it helpful to number each of the boxes *on each side* as well as on the top, so you can easily tell what number box it is from any angle.

I also wrote on each box (though only on one side) which room the box should be put in in the new place: kitchen, downstairs bath, upstairs bedroom, etc. That way the movers didn't just dump everything in one room but knew where everything was supposed to go.

We moved a lot. I second the others on making a list of what is in each box. And label the room you want the box to go in.

Plastic bins, on sale, don't cost much more than cardboard and are better at dealing with weather and other mishaps.

Never pack a box heavier than you can carry. Even if you are hiring movers.

Purge, purge, purge.

Take a look at what it costs to move something. We found it cheaper and more efficient to repurchase certain things even if we would still use it.

Ah the wine! Yes, will make sure that is the first priority :)

Thank you everyone for your stellar advice. I had not thought of lists at all, so that is fabulous. I love a good list!

Also I had not thought about the obvious stuff like linen for when we arrive and paper plates! So thank you all :)

We are culling now, and my, a lot of things are going out. I feel like we are removing boxes of stuff every few days and still more comes....

De-junk then hire packers. Arm yourself with a sharpie to write the room destination for each box just before it goes into the moving truck.

Open bottle of wine and relax.

I agree, make a list of everything as it goes in boxes, and label the boxes accordingly - you'll think you'll remember but with everything else going on you won't. Make plans to purge what you don't need and how to get rid of it (we donated a washer and dryer to the local Habitat for Humanity store and they picked it up in their truck, but it took a few days to arrange). Think about meals for the last day or so in the old place, any traveling days, and the first couple days in the new house - get some disposable plates and silverware, and maybe pack a special box with all the staples and cookware to make one or two basic meals when you get there.

'Splurge' and buy plenty of boxes, rolls of bubble wrap and packing paper, tape, and Sharpies. Measure any large pieces of furniture before they get moved and note the measurements somewhere in your info, so that you can do a little virtual arranging in the new place before everything is placed.

If you can, schedule a cleaning service to clean the old place once you're out, and the new place before you move in.

My first thing to do is get rid of everything I do not want to move with us. The longer you stay in your place, the more 'junk' you accumulate, IMHO.

Saves packing it, moving it and unpacking it later...trust me

I have moved a lot. I pack up rooms that I don't use much first such as a formal dining room. I then pretty much go room by room. Kitchen last but always use paper plates etc last couple of days. I pack each box and on the outside write the room it came from and I give it a number. I then have a notebook in which I write the number of the box and name of room and give a general description of its contents. At the end you have long list but if I need to find an item urgently when I arrive I have usually been able to find it. This method also helps the movers place the boxes in the correct rooms when you arrive.
I purchase wrapping paper from the movers but also use newspaper. I do the first wrap in the good purchased paper to keep items clean then use the newspaper ! Day of the move I strip the beds and put all the bedding in bags and take in the cars with us. That way at the end of a usually long day I can make the beds up easily.
I guess I should also mention that I purge big time as I go !!
Good Luck :))

Yes, have a master list with what is in each box (including miscellaneous: you need a better idea than that if you have more than one misc. box).

Well, we are moving! I've known for a little while but it's begun to get "real". We have been in this house for 14 years, and in Sydney all our lives. And now we are heading up to Brisbane, where it will be warm, and my coats will not get much of an outing!
I've noticed a few people moving recently - Mo is packing, E has just moved - and I'm wondering: does anyone have any good hints for moving and packing? After not having done it for so long, anything I should look out for???? Any top tips or words of wisdom?
