Should be in Taos on Friday (on road trip) having lunch with a bunch of artists. LOL. Longish grey hair, fabulous scarves and earrings, strong eyeglass game, practical boots or hiking shoes. And hats, OMG. Pile on a bit of hand made jewelry. They are still wearing slimmer jeans so as to tuck into boots or socks.
These people use wood stoves and 4 wheel drive most of the year, so dress accordingly.
We used to be them, before moving for husbands health. Geographical fashion is a real thing.
Thanks for the laugh this morning, Joy. So many grandmas!

Well, I'm all for celebrating this grandma trend. It's hard to remember another time where "women of a certain age" were made into style icons, except for certain famous ones.

I'm going to add that in my state the mountains are full of arts colonies and vibrant small foodie/arts cities. So mountain grandma doesn't have to automatically mean plaids and outdoor gear. Any casually sophisticated, artistic look would fit the vibe completely. Think "hippies grew up and became wealthy but kept their counter-culture artistic leanings and dressed however they wanted, just with class and money."

I love this direction or capsule for you!
I like the suggestions so far. Would also note that watching out for fit and proportions can be important for petite or small- boned grandmas! Also juxtaposing “ mountain “ elements with some more tailored or dressy items.

In pandemic- retirement I think I accumulated sort of a Woodsy Grandma collection— think Eddie Bauer, Faherty, some Athleta sweaters, along with some TJMAXX finds, .
In particular we had one of our coldest, snowiest winter spells on record and I bundled up a lot.
It is very easy fir me to get swallowed up in looser, thicker items. I actually live shackets indoors because run so cold, like a shirttail hem, can button up or wear open, but taking a step back , it is easy for me to look frumpy in some of these items or the outfits I put together.
It often boils down to item- specific details like collar size or lack of any shaping , or fabrics too bulky, or a plaid that is too large and bold for me, or pants fit too baggy, so I am learning to be more discriminating. For example, I found a Faherty plaid shirt with a smaller collar, more subdued plaid, in a fabric with some stretch that gives a bit of waist. In addition, I was not always holding out for better colors to come along in time, so had some good outfits but not as mix- and - match as I wanted for traveling ( to see the grandkids !) or just as “ best” colors.
It is also less of my style in summer because is so hot, yet I want a little tailoring, so I have to watch out for looking sloppy & wrinkled in shirts as 3rd layer.
I still have some workwear items in silks, cashmere and wool that I can mix with sportier items, and I still swoon over new styles in such fabrics, , but now I need to be practical and washable for things I expect to wear often. Merino layers are still an option- I find them pretty tough and easier to wash- but I have to carefully store such items for half the year.
Anyway, that has been part of my learning curve as I grabbed up some items and then gradually learned that I wanted to look a bit more polished - “ sharper”, maybe- but still comfortable, active, outdoorsy. Fit,fit, fit!

Hiking pants, hiking shoes or boots, wooly turtleneck, light fleece vest, snow resistant anorak. Of course that’s for cold weather. For warmer, same but a wicking short sleeve tee instead of layers on top.

Of course I’m thinking straight up Colorado mountains.

Ooh, now that's my style! Gingham or plaid shirts, chambray/denim, Pendleton wool, sturdy lace-up boots, ski sweaters, puffers. For accessories, you could go stetson/fedora, toque/beanie, *or* trucker cap, depending on the weather and your preferences. If you don't want to do jeans, then cargo/carhartt/hiking pants -- olive or khaki. But also think sturdy skirts! Either twill/denim midis for a frontier look, or cozy fabric mini/knee-length with leggings underneath for more of an apres-ski look. A fall/winter Title Nine catalogue will have lots of good inspo. :)

What great ideas. I think I can shop my closet for several things. I want a new Christmas skirt,
. A plaid would be perfect with a puffy vest and flat boots and a great scarf. A still have a couple pair of jeans that can be used. I am looking for paid flannel shirts to wear under vests I have and tops to wear under plaid shirts for more ways to layer. The sweaters will be harder except for very cold times. They can also be layered under and over. Such good ideas!

Apparently the use of stripes was to make sailors more visible if they went overboard, maybe there's a mountain interpretation, in either direction, more or less visible? Some of my winter clothing is unusually bright and seems appropriate during deer hunting season.

I'm definitely thinking plaid, not necessarily lumberjack per se, but the vibe of no nonsense, get things done. A mountain grandma to me would be like my own late grandma and my aunt. Ourdoorsy, chopping firewood, using a tractor, growing and canning fruits and veggies, foraging berries in the woods, etc.
