Zaeobi, everything you said makes perfect sense. It was very much an unplanned purchase so that’s probably why it’s gone back.
Runcarla,l certainly think that we sometimes get the weather for this sort of jacket but it doesn’t last long and l have plenty of other options so l want to be absolutely sure it’s the one.
Bijou, you are so kind.l can totally see why you get a lot of use out of this style but l have a feeling that your wardrobe is somewhat more glamorous than mine!
suntiger, thank you for commenting.Yes l think that your winters must be milder. It’s definitely puffer weather here at the moment.
suz, thanks again for your input,it’s been really helpful.

I like it a lot on you and you styled it well! Since it's brown there's less of that hard edge that comes with black leather.
Last time I owned one, I was able to wear it in winter, though my winters may be milder than yours.

Cardiff Girl, I love it on you.

Only you can say whether you will wear it, but I find motos a great way to dress down items to make them more wearable. Now that I am working from home, my denim and leather jackets seem to be the most hard-wearing jackets in my wardrobe.
I hope you have fun styling this new wardrobe addition.

I had a similar coloured leather moto and it pulled its weight during a one month trip to Ireland and UK during April. I wore it under a trench coat or by itself - depending on the weather. It was great for cutting the wind. The trench protected it on wet days, but we didn’t have many of those. ;-)

April and October were the months I would wear it most.

I like to work backwards from the bigger picture when purchasing something like this: 1- What are you purchasing it for?
2- (i.e. when & where would you wear it?)
3- How would you wear it (with what)?

For example, you said that it doesn't work well with skirts - the proportions look good to me, but you obviously don't feel that way. So the question is Why? What *exactly* about the silhouette/ layering/ feel here isn't working for you? You may find that a few tweaks (like adding high shaft footwear & tucking in the jumper) change your perceptions (Q#3).
But if you're purchasing it explicitly as a 'throw on & go' piece (Q#2), then that suggests it needs to be wearable with everything from trousers to skirts (Q#1). So in this case, I agree to hold out for a piece that will fulfill *all* your criteria.

Personally, I'm wary of the 'classic' items 'every' woman is 'supposed' to own - I don't own a white shirt, trench coat, an LBD or blue jeans, because those items don't work for my body & lifestyle. So whilst I *do* own a leather jacket, it's less of a 'moto' (just tonal zips) since I find the lack of hardware more versatile (easier to style). It's also cropped with a welted hem & 3/4 sleeves, since our (HK's) transitional weather is not as cold as elsewhere. And a bomber style (short collar) works better for me than spread lapels.

Your exact iteration may differ from mine (less of a bomber style, but not Moto either?) but the key thing (from my example above) is to think which features would help to fulfill *your* criteria.

Thanks lsabel and Jamie for commenting.l agree with Angie and you Isabel,it’s become obvious that the fit isn’t quite right so l will be returning it today however l am grateful to you all for your input it really helped to clarify things.Going forward l think that there is definitely room for a jacket in a lighter ,brighter colour in my wardrobe whether that’s a moto or not we will see.l think it depends on the jacket itself rather than boxing myself into one paticular style.

Suz,thank you for taking the time to give such a full reply.l think that maybe you are right,l might have a look around and try a few different ones on .A quick glance today at the new ins on line shows quite a few moto jackets coming through for spring so l might wait and see what else comes in.l did order a cotton one a few years ago but it never arrived , that fabrication might make more sense than a faux leather one.
Jenni, yes you are right that inner voice is there for a reason!
Minaminu and Irina, thank you for your kind words and thoughts on the subject.Much appreciated.

I think a moto is a great casual jacket for transitioning weather and this jackets suits you very well! The colour is great on you and the fit works well if you'd like to add a jumper or you could also keep it loose with a maxi dress. I'd try it with some other pieces in your wardrobe and see how it works.

However, I will speak up for team no-moto, just to say I have never owned one either as for me they have never felt right. I think your questioning of whether you would wear it needs listening to. The fact you had one before that you didn’t wear gives me pause.

I love it on you. And I love the idea of it for you, even if you decide the fit of this one is not exactly what you wish. The sentence that kkards quotes popped out at me, as well, and also the fact that you ordered it in -- so you must have been dreaming of it.

….-elevates my extremely casual wardrobe but not in a way that l can’t ever see myself wearing it because it’s too smart, fussy etc

The shoulders in the first few photos look as if they are large; not so much in the skirt/ pullover photo). It could be that the material is a bit stiff and will soften.

Explanation/ context -- I was always pro-moto in theory but I had to try (and return) several jackets before I kept one. I tried two black ones -- truly over the top and costume-like on me. I tried some fabric ones -- wrong fabrics or colours. I finally got the blue Massimo Dutti one. Wore it quite a lot its first few years, put it aside for a year or two, wore it again for a year or so, then the pandemic, and now it is coming out again.

It is a "classic" moto -- cropped, slim cut. Unlike LJP, I love these jackets (cropped denim jackets, also) for their versatility with high waists, skirts, dresses, etc. I recognize that current cuts are larger or more oversized, but those cuts do not suit me in this style of jacket (or at least suitable ones might take a lot of try-ons to discover) so I have stayed away from the trend. I figure if I am wearing a more current bottom and footwear, that is fine.

Anyway, my point is that for my particular body type and figure modifiers and my particular needs, a modified moto (or other cropped jacket) is a wardrobe essential.

I wear it as a topper outside in spring/ fall. I wear it inside (with a puffer or other coat over for outdoors) occasionally in winter, especially if going someplace where the indoor temps will be relatively cool. I don't wear it to work from home. But I don't wear my blazers at home, either.

It's the kind of thing I'd throw on to meet friends at a pub. Or to do a library run.

But the fabrication matters. I have a really hard time with faux leather myself (I perspire in it and rarely like the way it feels) so if that is what it is made of, I might hesitate. But not everyone feels that way -- a lot of people love their faux leather coats and I know the quality of faux leather is much much better these days than in days past.

Well - I like it on you and like how you’ve styled it , but …..I have had exactly the same experience with moto jackets . I have a couple of different black leather ones and can’t remember the last time I wore one . I agree with Star in that the traditional moto fit ( snug and cropped ) is not exactly new or fresh looking. I’d personally go for one that is longer and looser - i.e. a more current fit - if I were to buy another one . I feel the same way about little denim jackets too . Classic , yes , but …

I bought my first moto recently. They never really seemed like " me" so I do not know what changed?? I love it! To me it really elevates an outfit and it fit well with my wardrobe.
Have fun playing with it as DonnaF suggested.

Slim cat, column,Helena and Jussie, thank you!I feel like team moto has just waded in!Good to have your thoughts ladies.
Donna F ,yes proportions are very important in an outfit aren’t they.l usually suit a longer jacket but it’s not a good look with the high waisted styles.

Star, yes l think that the fact l am asking the question is already telling me something.Thank you.
Notsaf, thank for replying.l can’t size down as the size below is too small across the shoulders for me and yes it is quite cropped.
Carols thank you,all good points. The temperature thing is so hard to predict these days isn’t it.
Bonnie,thank you.
jessikams, yes this is very much in my mind Too cold for most of the year then too sweaty for the rest of it!
Angie thank you for responding,l value your opinion. It’s too small in the size below but you are the second person to suggest that so maybe the fit isn’t great.
Dee,thank you for your thoughts,l appreciate it.

The jacket is quite flattering on you. Play around with your wardrobe a bit more. Take pics including pics with alternate toppers. Think long and hard whether you would actually reach for the moto or inevitably reach for something else. I’m thinking that nothing else will look as good with wider leg pants.

Keep in mind that I have several motos or moto style jackets and another on the way because I have very short legs and normal length jackets do not give me good proportions.

I quite like it. To my eyes the fit is good… especially to balance out the slightly more oversized pants that are often worn currently…
I really like moto style jackets and denim/other light non-
blazer jackets. In winter I put a puffer over them for the outdoors, then inside take the puffer off and keep the moto on. Our heating in Australia is not strong indoors though so light jacket still required inside. I’m not sure if in your location the indoor heating would be so strong that the moto would be too hot indoors?
The other thing, they are so handy with dresses in summer. I’ve even put them over an open longer cardigan (it works sometimes!).
You can tell I’m team moto can’t you?

I like it very much - the fit, the color and all the looks ( fav is the last one - with wide leg jeans ).
I have a few moto jackets now - All Saints black, NYC faux leather blue, NYC silver for holidays and one very light rayon for summer time. I wear leather and faux leather jackets at work with longer and roomier puffer as a outerwear. I could not make it work with skirts and only do it with jeans, trouser pants. Cropped length is fine as long as it reaches my waist or just covers it. I find the moto jacket good alternative to classic blazers - modern and slightly sporty.

Oh my, I think it looks great on you and I especially love that colour. It seems to work so well with all your high-waisted items, and now those languishing scarves will have something to go with.

I’d treat it more as a third piece topper ( more like a cardigan) as oppose to just an outdoor jacket all the time. It will elevate all your outfits, but only you know for sure if its going to fit into your current lifestyle, but I think its worth a try.
