Gray all the way! I made the decision to stop coloring my hair auburn about 1 1/2 years ago and haven't looked back.

I just covered my red with a more natural color. I enjoy playing around with anything new in hair color, but I agree with bj1111 that it's probably going to be easier to go grey with natural coloring.

Mine is dyed red, and not a natural color for me, although oddly sometimes people think it is natural, particularly when it has faded to a more dark cognac sort of color like it is right now (note to self: need to go to salon ASAP). My natural (black) hair is nice but I think it looks a little severe; plus, the reddish hair makes me more autumn than winter, and looks better with my favorite blues and greens. The red goes over the black without bleaching though so the overall effect is still quite dark and looks non-artificial, although not natural for my ethnicity.

"Furiously contrived" -- perfectly worded! That's exactly what I mean when I say that "hot pink is another kettle of fish entirely". I'm a big fan of obviously fake colours, especially if it's just a few bright streaks, and not the whole head.

I once saw gray-haired woman in deep middle age who had put several fire-engine red streaks into her otherwise nearly-white hair. She looked so cool.

Natural all the way for me, unless it is furiously contrived --- I've always had an yen for bright blue! (only ever used a temporary spray-on version of silver blue, though, and henna to add subtle reddish tint a few times.)

I got my hair highlighted blond for the first time when I was sixteen years old. For nearly the next two decades, I didn't look back; it was always some shade of blond or, occasionally, red. Then, about five years ago, I had a sudden urge to see what my natural colour looked like. It took a while to grow out enough that I could cut off all the blond, but once I did, I was surprised by how much I loved it. It's a much warmer, richer brown than I had imagined.

Here's the thing. My natural colour suits my complexion and brings out the colour in my eyes much better than the blond ever did. And it's so shiny and healthy now. Split ends are a thing of the past. I'm starting to think that perhaps nature does know best. If I ever colour my hair again (which, at the moment, doesn't seem likely, although it's possible I'll change my mind once the gray starts to come -- it depends how the gray looks on me), I doubt I'll go more than a shade or two lighter or darker than what I've already got. Unless I decide to go hot pink or something -- but that's a different kettle of fish entirely. :-)

How do you feel about hair colour? Do you think natural, or close to natural, is best? Or are you a die-hard chemical colour supporter?

And what about gray? Are you inclined to let the gray happen, or are you in the cover-it-up camp?
