The nest is empty again. My husband thinks she was in the middle of laying last time and that's why she came back. Again, there were no shells or shell pieces around. I think it may have been a raccoon. They would be able to carry eggs away whole. I know they can be active during the day, as I saw one mid day when we were in Texas last week.

I hope she's okay, though.

Ledonna, fingers crossed!

Isabel, I did feel like I was getting too emotionally invested in this duck. i haven't put out food (not sure what they eat!), just some water.

Just adding that sometimes it's best to limit your participation to being slightly helpful in securing the shelter. Adding food, etc. might attract other animals or increase territorial behavior. Low key interaction and extreme discretion is probably safest.

Before I saw the nest I had seen the duck standing there a day or so before. Before that, there wasn't a nest. I had been trimming back the perennials and would have seen it.

I would have thought there would have been some shell pieces, if the predator had been a hawk, or something like that. The eggs were a lot bigger than a chicken egg. As Rabbit said, maybe it was a person, but it was pretty hidden from the street. It really is mysterious. I'm so glad she's okay!

How long do you think the nest was there? Gestation is about 4 weeks. I've read that ducks might move their eggs. Of course, I've also read the opposite, but it's usually a Joe Schmo saying that, not like a zoologist. If they hatched or were gotten by a predator - either way you'd likely as not see egg shell...

Rabbit, yes, I was so relieved to see her! I really did feel sick.

Her spot is among some perennials alongside our house. Even if you're two feet from her she's hard to see. A friend thought raccoons, but I think the eggs disappeared mid day, and I don't think they come out during the day, but maybe they do. Any animal experts out there?

Huh! Well good that she is doing alright. Is the area one where people walking by can see her and the nest and interfere? When you described the missing eggs I wondered if it was a person that collected them, as I would think an animal might leave evidence, broken shells, etc. Or maybe they were rolled a short distance away? I suppose something like a raccoon could carry eggs... A mystery!

Okay, this is really crazy, but the duck is back! I stopped looking for her after the nest was empty, but we had some arborists over today, and one of them mentioned the duck was back. I just checked a few minutes ago, and sure enough. I put her saucer of water back.

I was showing my neighbor the nest so she could fill the saucer with water while we're gone. When we looked at the nest, the duck was gone as were all the eggs. There were no shells or feathers around. I have no idea what happened.

Dottie, you reminded me that I needed to give her some water. We had an arborist over the other day who suggested I put out a saucer of water. She's sitting on the eggs now. The last time I saw the eggs, two days ago, there were five. So I don't know how many there are now.

We definitely plan to keep the dogs away from the nest. The nest is outside the gate to the backyard, on the side of the house. We seldom use that gate. My husband thought he might put up a piece of plywood so that the dogs can't see the duck. She's kind of hidden by yarrow and irises, but Mr. Skunky knows she's there and that is driving him wild. Per the Ducks Unlimited website, mallards lay an average of 9 eggs, and they hatch within 28 days once incubation begins. My husband said she won't start incubating until all the eggs are laid. I think they lay one egg a day. So, this can go on for five weeks!

I do love baby ducks, though, so it'll be worth it.

Oh my. How long until they hatch and waddle off?? Perhaps you should send your neighbors a case of wine if this might take awhile;-).

Mother Nature is indeed crazy...seems the neighborhood cat thought my guest bathroom sink was the perfect spot to have her kitten (only 1). The little one was born 2 weeks ago and is about ready to walk, yet mama will not let it stay in the nice safe high-sided box I prepared. Don't know what to do about that.

That's so great. Years ago we had a pond in our back yard and a Mama duck took up residence. Our dog at the time, a Weimaraner, was very interested in her but he didn't like water so she was relatively safe as long as she stayed in the pond. We put up some chicken wire fencing just in case. My son, about 4 years old at the time, said that she laid eggs and we would have baby ducks. I told him it was July and not really the time for ducks to be having babies. A few days later, there were baby ducks in the pond with Mama. Shows what I know about duck reproduction. She ended up moving out with the ducklings soon after.

Your dog has a new hobby. I had a group of 3 deer that took up residence just behind my fence all off last year. It drove my dogs crazy. While my dogs were barking, the deer just ignored them, but when my dog would settle down and give him the collie stare, one of the males would become aggressive.
