Joy, I appreciate your encouragement ! I'm coming around, I think,

Ryce, thank you for celebrating with me. And getting me to the mall! Those are good ideas. I had been "shawl" averse due to thinking it will be fussy and unreliable, but it IS more elegant than jackets, or most that turn up, and I have done the knot thing with some success--it helps to have the right fabrication that holds up for that, so that's something I could plan for. Also, I am trying to remember about pictures, in which I hope to wear dress sans coverup.
I like the look of some kitten heels but they don't like me--I tend to be more stable in a chunky heel or wedge even if higher. But at least now that I have a dress to focus on, I can get serious about what kind of footwear will go well but still be outdoor-walking/standing friendly.

So glad to learn you had at least some success on your shopping expedition!! Those oxfords are sharp!

The Kay Unger dress is beautiful on you and seems so appropriate for the wedding as you describe it. Has the bride seen it yet, and does she agree? Understand where you are coming from with being self-conscious about your arms, but objectively you look great with them uncovered. Also, aren't the odds pretty small that you would be comfortable in sleeves or a jacket in South Texas in late April? Especially on a exciting occasion like this -- often the body runs a little warm at such times.

Would you consider a pashmina if the evening turns out to be a little cool? They used to drive me crazy until I learned the trick of knotting the ends -- in my experience, with that little bit of weight at each end, the shawl tends to stay in place and doesn't really require fussing and adjustment. And so many pretty rosy colors available.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/no.....sultback=0

As for shoes, what about a kitten heel? It's usually hard to negotiate uneven outdoor surfaces with higher heels. And you are so slender that you don't "need" the extra height (you lucky thing!)

-Ryce (who is rejoicing in your progress toward the perfect MOB outfit)

Unfrumped, I had the same reservations about showing my arms but for an August wedding. After some soul searching, it seemed best to be comfortable and let tne arms be what they are. I did wear a silk jacket as a guest at a June wedding and the photos are more flattering when not wearing a jacket.
Your arms look lovely and slender. You don't need to cover them.

you are right - dress #2 is the second dress which is the one Angie likes as well. The first is lovely and a keeper for all the reasons you have said but too casual for the wedding. sorry if it was confusing.

Oh this is helpful though agonizing. It is great to have some hand-holding on this journey. I think # 2 means dress 2, which is Angie' s # 5- Kay Unger wins? If I am interpreting correctly. Thank you, Angie! It is scary to make Kay's acquaintance, if you know what
I mean.

That Vince Camuto blue midi frock is sensational!! I have seen it on bodies and it's amazing. Also a 10 on you :)

But not for the wedding. It's far too casual. And all the renditions look like day dress outfits, although very lovely, not quite wedding appropriate.

I love #5 for the wedding. It's KILLER.

What a lucky find. The shopping goddesses were rewarding you.

I'm absolutely in love with the Kay Unger dress on you! To me it has MUCH more of the right look for a MOTB. Doesn't it figure that it would be the pricey one!
But it is just gorgeous and special, and would look great either with a little silk jacket or without, and I think you could wear it for plenty of other festive occasions as well.

This is not the time to be too frugal! This is a very special and joyous occasion and you deserve to look beautiful and glamorous. Plus, people will look at those wedding pictures for years to come!

I also love those oxfords, btw...

LOVE those shoes!!!

Your slender arms look GREAT and #2 dress definitely looks very special MOTB because it is dressier. The others are okay and wedding guest appropriate but don't hold a candle to #2 IMHO. If it is silk and lined in silk (does that ever happen?), it would be perfect for higher temps. Of course it is easy for me to spend someone else's money, LOL, but if you think this marriage will last, get the dress and find/make other opportunities to wear it! And please don't cover it up with a jacket; it (and you!) are to pretty for that.

Joy, thank you, I think you are right, a cropped style (or at least short) seems best and this would be aimed at the best one for the dress--not aiming to multi-task here. I ordered some pink jackets today to start getting an idea of what might work.
I guess the sleeve issue is personal--I am sensitive about a bit of middle-aged upper arm wingage, in the sense of, if I'm trying to look my best at a dressy event, it's not my best feature. But I would have to be prepared to remove jacket if really hot as that would be better than looking ridiculously hot & sweaty. Maybe I shouldn't care? I'm frustrated that there are so few dresses with a short or 3/4 slim lightweight sleeve, which would make me feel less self-conscious. I tried on just about every dress there was with any sleeve, hoping the rest of it might fit.

I really like #2. Are you sure that you need a jacket with the cap sleeve and in Texas in April?

Glory, thank you. You get why it came home with me.

So the wedding did evolve some, but it is still outdoors in south Texas at 6 pm when temps projected highs are 70-80, then may cool off a bit after sunset. But, the bride is wearing full beautiful gown, bridesmaids wearing short but bridesmaid-like dresses, and groom and groomsmen finally decided to go tuxedos. Reception is outdoors, buffet style. So the wedding party will, in photos, look like a full-on semi-formal wedding (no tux's or full-length gowns for guests).

I could not find a style like # 1 in a more luxurious color or fabric (so far) that is not black (even those were not perfect).

I do have another dress back-ordered, an AP large dot on navy dress. I think it will not fit as well as the VC but will see.

You see my dilemma entirely.
#1 is more "me" I think for wearing easily--certainly more useful as a regular dress which is why I plan to get it anyway even though it's blue. #2 is more glam, more special occasion and perhaps more "adult woman" in my mind, but then I get confused.

Shoes, Hahaha! Trudging from one to another of the 4 big dept stores at this mall, I entered Nordie's at the shoe dept, said what can it hurt to take a moment to peek at my size on the sale rack, and there they were. Actually they are 1/2 size below my usual but they leaped out at me and I tried them and they fit.

I love dress #1 for you in general. Dress #2 seems more MOTB to me but I can't pinpoint why. Sheen? Not as fond of #3 maybe because it's separates and seems like it could be workwear also.

Here is an update for all of the kind YLF’ers who have been helping me.

Spent a whole day at the Big Mall and did not feel that I found “the outfit”. I do think it helped a lot to go there—got much more focused. I did look for something in the line of a pantsuit and did not “see” anything that would work, but also came away feeling like I would keep my eyes more open here at home.

I brought home 2 dresses that are easily returnable in order to “play” with them more. Also, like Dorothy saying there’s no place like home, I have a dress that I ordered from Nordstrom’s a few weeks ago and had not yet returned because it was partly right. After not finding any dresses along its same lines, it's looking better.

Disclaimer: none of the toppers or jackets shown are ones I would use; I’ve just shown them to get some feel for what the dresses would look like with a jacket and certain colors, if I could get the right length/color/style.

Dresses and issues:
1-4 VC blouson dress in a blue print. This is the one I’d kept from mail-order that is the direction I hoped to go in, and now has achieved higher status. It’s blouson and too big on top, shown after I’ve clipped it in back. This is the best dress by far I’ve found for a kind of easy, elegant skirt drape & length. In most of the dresses I’ve tried, the waist is too high, making the fullness start too high for me, and/or the fullness is too full, and looks baby-doll or pregnant, especially when skirts are too short. Blue is not my healthiest-looking color, but if I had a contrasting jacket from the red family I could get over that. To make it more wedding-like, I prefer a dressy jacket to a cardigan, so I only show the pink cardigan, fuchsia & black jackets to get some idea of color contrasts.

Q: Do you think a “cool” deep pink , short, dressy jacket would look good with the blue? I think one might be findable. There is a lot of HOT pink out there—is that too attention-getting for MOTB? Navy would of course “go,” but doesn’t improve color. Also would find a different belt --could be wider/more defined.

(Separate epiphany: I think I want to get this dress regardless, after finding how hard it is to get “all” of my wants in one dress, this one seems very wearable and can be paired with toppers in rosier colors at a range of price points. I was going to take it in for alterations this week, but now see there’s a smaller size, so may order that & compare.

5-7: Kay Unger dress that I brought home, but probably shouldn’t have. Thought it was on sale at first, but was “last call” but the colors I love and beautiful fabric sucked me in to trying on. High price for me for a dress. For a usual MOTB dress I think would be okay, also more evening-like, has a few sparkles up top, but the catch is, I still would want to wear a jacket, and this dress would call for a very nice jacket, maybe silk in a shade of the caramel/nude/gray colors in the dress, which can be harder to find (a leather jacket could be luscious, but not for April in Texas) & nude shoes to move it from fall-colors to more springy. Then, I end up with this expensive dress with nice neckline and V back that I will always cover up, with a likely expensive jacket. My frugal side says that for sleeveless dresses I should pay a lot less and emphasize fit & look of the jacket. Other issue is the sheath style itself; great for cocktail parties, but I had just figured would not be as “easy” to wear for a long evening outdoors .Shoes would be an issue—can’t wear “fab” pumps or strappy heeled sandal that this dress may call for.

8-9: Just something else I tried—dress with black skirt portion and print top. I would have liked it better if whole dress was the print, as adding a colorful jacket could work (column of print). Also has a kind of pseudo-peplum—it’s a kind of bow—that makes jackets more difficult. This dress requires alterations in bodice that may not come out well and so at present it’s a reject.

Last pics: No trip to Nordies is wasted—Sperry oxfords in shoe sale! Love the color--called “cordovan” but is more mottled and interesting to my eye than a typical cordovan. Not a dainty oxford, but very wearable as a working day shoe and a nice change from black and brown and goes with every color.
