Thanks everyone for all your ideas! I appreciate it. I'll ask my friends here and then look at the local food shelter to see if I can donate some of my clothes to the more needy right here in my local area

There are some good ideas here. I know that our local food shelf has a clothing closet where clients of the food shelf are allowed to pick so many items of clothing for free per quarter. When I was in the clothing closet, I was really appalled at how poor the condition was of the clothing. People had in essence donated what they really should have thrown out.

The only concern with donating to places where you are giving direct to the end user is if you wear an unusual clothing size. For instance, if you wear an unusual clothing size and donate your clothes to the emergency dept. in the local hospital, they may have to store it for quite a while until the right-sized person comes along. So I would let them know beforehand that you wear an uncommon size if that is the case. Then they'll better be able to instruct you.

I donate everything to our local Assistance League thrift store, of which I am a member. We are a 100 percent volunteer organization. We have zero employees. So everything goes to our programs which include a food pantry for low income senior citizens (we hand out over 600 bags of groceries every month), grants for local school teachers, and school clothes for low income children. There are other programs, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

I agree with Laura and lyn*. I donate my clothes to shelters and similar organizations. Social workers in emergency departments are a great idea.

I agree with Laura - the closer you are to the person who is going to get the goods the better. Shelters and a similar organization to Dress for Success gets most of my things - T-shirts and winter jackets go to the social worker in the emergency department.

I think about this a bit differently. What I want to do is to make it as likely as possible for my still wearable clothes to have a second life, preferably without having to travel across the world (usually again) first. So anything that I don't send to Twice to resell goes to my local Savers, which is a thrift department store that keeps most of the items they receive to sell, rather than baling them up and mailing them to Africa, like a lot of the drop off boxes in parking lots, etc., do. Savers is a for profit, but it's efficiently run and partners with local nonprofits to share a percentage of its profits. I know from seeing my old items in the store that things really do stay in house rather than being cherry picked by volunteers or resold online, both of which I've heard about happening at nonprofit thrift stores.

If there is a Dress for Success or a shelter in your area that wants your stuff and will use it, I think that's a great option.

Hi everyone. As a lot of you here already know, I am a shopaholic. As autumn starts to roll around, I am trying to clean out my closet so I can have more space for incoming items for fall and winter. I plan to donate my old items and I know there are a lot of rather fraudulent charities, like ones that donate just 10% of earnings to charity. Thus I want to ask the Fabber fashion community:

What is the most worthwhile charity to donate my old clothes to?
