My FIL was in the 4th wave of dday at Omaha beach. We have a shadow box with a great photo of him in his uniform with all his medals. When he passed there was a military honor guard at his funeral and we got a wood and glass display case for the flag. My MIL is still living but these heirlooms will go to my son. Because of grandpa’s service he became quite a military historian. I do really like Jenni’s tradition but - wearing the medals on the opposite side but in the US that might be misconstrued and I like the idea of preserving them anyway that’s what we did. Jessi, in NZ we are allowed to wear the inherited medals on our special commemorative day, but on the other side to where the service person would have worn them. Our special day is 25 April, called ANZAC Day, here and in Australia. It commemorates the Gallipoli landings in 1915, WW1. I wear Dad's WW2 medals that day. Often it is grandchildren wearing them now. Most people love seeing it, but not pacifists of course. I feel a bit uneasy I think but those wars really shaped our country esp WW1. So I think important to acknowledge the history at least.
