Well, I've barely worn my cropped pants yet so I hope to get some use out of them this year.

As for straight legs, I love my AG Harper Slim Straights so much I bought a second pair in a different wash.

Something about social media... I'm not on social media, I can check my husband's Facebook if anyone only wants to communicate that way. The ads on other websites... Mine are mostly shoe ads as I have looked at Styletread on the same computer. But it doesn't give me any "wantsies". If I did want to buy those shoes, I would go back to the original website. It doesn't make me any more likely to, I believe. It's just annoying to have shoes on the page when I'm trying to read the news!

Loving this conversation.

About next fall/winter trends

I don't use cropped things and I don't get along with skinnies, so "Yeah! Finally!" for full-length straight jeans and trousers. Whenever straight, bootcut, flare or "old-school wide leg" jeans/trousers are "in", I make stocks of them so there I can avoid buying pants until they are in again - but Brazilian stores aren't selling them yet (we are entering spring/summer, so it will probably take a while until they hit the stores) :(
I'm all and always in favor of individualism [in Marina's bible individualism isn't a trend, it is a life principle :p ]

Retail overkill -> I like how it looks on some people and w/ certain personal styles, but it doesn't feel like me (ok, that is an understatement, it isn't like me at all - while some people look very stylish in them, I look like a beggar).

Bring back -> I love mixing "timeless" clothes with "sort of vintage" and ethnic/handcrafted items, so this one and modern retro are going to make me insanely happy - same goes for waist definition, pantsuits, all rise lengths, flats, low heels and all toe shapes and tall boots. And yeah for midi skirts too (I prefer my skirts knee length, but midis are ok too - and I can shorten a midi skirt a little bit if I want anyway).

In resume, I need to regrowth my wardrobe, but I think I'm going to wait until next fall/winter.

ps.: about social media and advertisement -> I think social media is just a tool. How you use it is entirely up to you. And in an ideal world, no amount of advertising should be able to sell a bad product, but marketing/advertising actually works - allowing brands to be all about the advertising and not about the product at all. This is not a social media problem and this goes for all sorts of goods and services, not just clothing. (Advertising, overpricing things and screwing people and products since 1836).

They can pry grey from my cold, dead hands. I'm enjoying the oversaturation of black because it's my happiest neutral, but I would like to see some more options.

I'm really slow to get excited about new trends, especially with jeans. I started wearing skinny jeans about five years late, and now I'm starting to maybe get into the idea of distressed denim. But every time I see it done in a way I like, it's really expensive, and I just can't bring myself to pay extra for something that weakens the integrity of the garment. It doesn't make sense to me at all.

I agree with everything. And the social media comment really stands out to me because I adore looking at outfits for inspiration, but I feel like I see the same handful of clothes on EVERYONE when I look at fashion bloggers lately. I know I'm exaggerating, but it feels like some of the individualism is getting a little lost. I like different! And I'd love to see the ripped denim go away, or at least, have a bit more to pick from for denim that is NOT ripped. Lately every time I reach for a pair of jeans they have a rip somewhere on them. I know it's a fun look, but a few more options would be nice. As casual as my job is, there's still that small handful of clothes that's a "no" and ripped denim is one of them.

Also, I didn't see any mention of all of the exposed shoulder looks. Are they still going strong? Or has cold shoulder, off the shoulders, and similar styles already on their way out?

Deborah, FWIW, this is how I see it. Clearly you've hit on good product - lucky you - which makes your social media experience a happy one. Hence we are back to the product. That's my point. You're giving social media the credit, when the product deserves the praise. No amount of marketing (not just social media) can sell a bad product. And last, I didn't say that social media was unimportant. It IS. But it should not become the focus that is to the detriment of the product. The ideal combination: a good product that is successfully channeled through social media.

Cindy, track dowm those pics.

Focussing on one point here:). It feels a little like social media is being presented as the bad guy but it's an amazing tool for sharing fashion, information etc. I love it! It's through social media channels that I have discovered so many amazing ethical clothing brands. I think good quality clothing only sells itself if people know it's out there, hence the need for marketing via social media. I rarely shop in stores these days and rely on my social media channels to let me know whats available. I also think that the companies sacrificing quality and design for a stronger focus on social media would be doing that regardless of the marketing avenues they use. Just my thoughts, and definitely my bias as I really enjoy social media x

I love trousers. I'll be really happy to see them back. I wonder...will the new trouser looks be intended for flats? Last time around, you pretty much had to wear heels to make the look work.

I was considering a silk tunic recently and, when I looked into the brand, it was obvious they spent a lot of energy getting their products into celebrity hands for photo ops in gossip rags and social media. It really turned me off.

I'm with Nadya: bring back brown (leather)!

I don't have much to say about social media but I certainly don't like google ads on every web page I see ( showcasing products I was just looking at on another site). It puts products and things and wantsies at the top of your mind, even when you just want to read about the hurricane on a newssite. But google ads are just part of the Internet fabric now, and I think I could disable them if I really wanted to.

I definitely agree about spending more on higher quality rather than on tons of advertising. This goes for every product, from cars to kitchen can openers (which seem to be getting way worse) to pants.

I'm happy that we can all do our own thing now. So many options! I will continue to wear denim on denim, which is becoming a bit of a signature for me.

Oh, sentence of the day- "milk your signature styles until you are tired of them" ( I think you said). Must write on bathroom mirror.
Because I DO eventually get tired of some things, or they don't look right anymore, or whatever- it's interesting how that just seems to happen, but often it takes me a couple of years ( or 3, or more) to get in the groove of something I'm liking, to finally hone how I want to look, or to wear or combine it. Maybe I finally built the complete capsule, got the perfect accessories. And I don't want to feel I should change before I'm " tired of it" myself.
Then, that works both ways- I may have tried something and can't figure out what it is, it's " current" but I just don't like it on me anymore- maybe it was a " mistake", maybe kindly it was an experiment. So I want to feel free to toss that.

On the other hand, you have to have something to advertise. I do think more brain power is going into social media than product. Or marketing in general. I don't know why, for example, my Nordstrom needs a Madewell inside of it when there's a Madewell next door...

Thank you for the encouragement not to give up wearing items we like. Clear grey, in all shades from light pastel grey to charcoal, is my most important basic colour, and I have no intentions to stop wearing it, as it suits me well and is a wonderful base for all my other cool colours. I usually mix grey with at least one non-neutral colour--in fall, for instance blue-red, purple, teal or deep forest green.

I love individuality and the chance to interpret these trends in our own way.

After a recent thread regarding my dressy footwear I came away thinking about how to wear things that might be dated and make them fresh - if you love them!!

Agree with you in most points, Angie. The most annoying trend for me might be skinnies. They are still everywhere, they are not very flattering on me, it's really hard to find a pair that fits, and they are impossible to wear in the summer heat. Also, I am all for individualism becoming a modern classic. Although I like to embrace new trends, there are some that are just not for me, and some things I love to wear whether or not they are trending.

I love your comments on social media. I've been waiting for the pendulum to swing back on social media for a while now. Counting on the millennials to lead the way on this one!

Chiming in quickly before I run off again.

Tex, good for you. Faded jeans are fine (I love them actually). I'm opposed to the relentless holes and rips. When it becomes hard to find a pair of jeans without holes and rips - you know the market is flooded.

LP, Club Monaco has nice wide pants. But maybe too dressy for you though. They look beautifully made.

Suz, high five.

Ginger, that's exactly why skinnies don't bother you. Good for you. Love your new AE jeans. There's a tweed waistcoat on sale at BR that you might like.

Isabelle and Anchie, YES. Lots of new Fall tops with dramatic sleeve treatment here too. Fab for Summer, but hard to layer over unless you have a cape, wrap or poncho

lisa p, I must have been unclear. Social media is a powerful marketing tool, and that's a good thing. You are right about that, and that's not what I'm against. I'm against it pulling rank over the thought, time, care and expense that goes into determining and creating the right product. If the product is bad - no amount of social media will sell it. And there is too much below par product out - yet social media channels about the products are relentless. Lots of time, money and energy spent on social media, and not enough on the product. (I'm a merchant and you're a marketer - so there will be bias on either side when we talk about this topic despite them being opposite sides of the same coin).

mtnsofthemoon, I'd like to understand why lined pants are so appealing to you.

Shedev, nice to see you. Exactly. I support variety, choice and diversity. I don't know why retailers flood the market with a look. I guess they don't know they're doing it - but as consumers, it's more obvious to us.

Interesting points, Angie, but I will respectfully disagree with your remark about the importance of social media. It's more powerful than any print media, and the quickest way to reach a global audience. And when you're a "seller" (like me) - nothing beats it. I think social media is more important than ever now for independent brands, new lines, emerging designers etc. I cannot imagine doing my job , or being a consumer of all things fashion . I don't think it's a case of a brand choosing to focus more on social media than designing / market research . :)

On the trouser bandwagon: Love full/long lenghts. What the heck happens to a basic LINED trouser? AT use to make the most beautiful lined tropical weight wool pants and poof they have been missing for what seems like forever. Keeping my fingers crossed the lined trouser will reappear. I still love my cropped and straight leg pants, but refreshing my very old and tired trousers would make me very happy.

I'd like to see the back of : ruffles, big complicated sleeves, cropped winter trousers and the fat white soles of sneakers glued to every shoe.

Ripped/destroyed denim were never big in retail here, I've never had problems finding dark blue jeans.
