Another over 50 here (52) - I don't post my outfits but read all the posts. I agree with CL about no cleavage & it took me viewing posts here to realize why I always felt uncomfortable in certain necklines - a style revelation! PPL is also very important for ALL ages. My other guidelines are perfect fit, no mini-skirts/dresses, minimal make-up, minimal jewelry, less black & more color & a big smile!

I am another of the over 50 tribe! I have learned so much since joining YLF. It's like looking at a catalog designed just for me and provides me with so much inspiration visually as well as a lot of wise advice via the forums. I love all the posts here but do find myself paying very close attention to the stylings of other women in my age group in the forum. I like the fact thatCocolion provided a link to her blog. Here is my link as well.

This site is such a tremendous resource for fasion at so many ages! Many members seem to be over 50.

I think it all depends on what you feel your best features are, and how you focus on them - at every age. If you have great skin, go ahead and show some of it. If your eyes or your silver hair is a highlight, do whatever you can to draw attention to it.

My mom-in-law loves Talbots, Jjill and Soft Surroundings styles and she worked in the clothing industry for many years. Tunics, brighter colors and bold jewelry look great on her but I have to encourage her more these days to get out and shop since she stays home a lot more these days as her husband caregiver. I tell her to try to keep looking great even if she's staying home because people come and visit all the time and there's no reason she shouldn't look her best.

Fit, color and quality DO seem more important as we get older. Or maybe we just get smarter ;-).

Hi NYCbeck and welcome! I am another over-50 member, I just turned 54 a few weeks ago. My style is fairly trendy but I anchor it with classics. Honestly, I don't think my look is traditionally "age appropriate" -- many, many people would think I dress too young.

My #1 rule is: don't show too much skin or cleavage. Here you can see some of my WIWs.

Welcome nycbeck--I too am another over 50 and have learned so much for Angie and the other readers. For me, I lean toward a more conservative look but pay attention to not looking stodgy or stuck-in-a-rut. Tailored, fitted pieces seem to work best for me. In fact, if something doesn't fit just right, I don't hesitate to take it to the tailor for a custom fit. It makes all the difference in the world especially as I've gotten older. I also have limited my black pieces, which looks to harsh on me now. I'm always reading and looking to see what's new and what works for me. I think that's the best way to stay young looking and not dated.

Welcome nycbeck!

Another over 50 fan here. There are many of us on this forum and I have gained so much knowledge from them and others by participating in YLF. I find I gain inspiration from members younger AND older than me. The trick is finding MY style and incorporating trends and ideas in a way that works for me. I agree with Kyle that simplicity and quality are important to me also.

Hi nycbeck. There are many, many over 50 year olds on this forum who post their outfits daily and are a HUGE inspiration. Take a browse through their WIW's and I am sure you'll be so pleased that you did.

Nice comment from Kyle

I'm one who fits in the over-50 camp. I have learned, for myself, that quality of clothing is more important than ever now, that simplicity of style is my friend, and that a few trends are OK, as long as they are not out of character and, for me, if they are paired with something more classic. I also find that I need to avoid anything too "cute" and that too much black is not always my friend, as it can be harsh. I love bold statements in an outfit, and while a single bold statement (like a necklace, or a colorful bag or scarf) is nice, keeping my hair and makeup more subtle is better for me.

I just read one of your earlier posts concerning your client Karen who is over 70 and was very impressed. As a woman of "a certain age" myself, I would love to see more posts featuring women over 50. You did such a fabulous job in helping her dress for her new lifestyle while respecting her inner style and personality. Do you have many clients in this age group?
