Scrunching looks best with smaller leg openings and at the ankle. I agree. You really want a skinny or tapered straight leg jeans to keep the length constant for both heels and flats. This is what I wear all the time – tapered straight leg jeans. Yeah. I would call them skinny. But not VERY skinny. It’s so easy. They work with every shoe and boot in my wardrobe. I bought two pairs of these jeans and wish that I had bought three.

I'm with you on the scrunching. I have a pair of straight legs that looks great from the front but when I turn to the side they're ever so slightly too short, but if I had left them to scrunch a bit, they would have looked sloppy. I love scrunching in theory, but it has to be around my ankle and no further. Once it starts scrunching all the way to the knee, it looks like I just didn't take the time to hem them. It definitely has to do with the size of the leg opening. I'm also petite and I feel that the above-the-ankle scrunch kind of destroys the long, unbroken line I'm seeking.

I doubt you can wear straight legs with both flats and heels. Skinny jeans are the only cut that I think can work with both flats and heels, but not straight legs.

I have been looking for a pair of straight leg dark wash jeans for flats. I've tried on a lot of jeans and found I sometimes liked the scrunch and sometimes I didn't. Wondering why this was the case I broke out my measuring tape and started measuring the circumference of the ankle openings. What I discovered was that the jeans with scrunch that looked sloppy to me (the scrunch seemed to travel all the way to the knee and pooled in an awkward way over my foot) had a 16 inch opening. These openings seemed to be borderline straight leg and slim boot cut to me and don't seem to work as either except maybe with heels because of where the front of the jean fell on the top of my foot. The jeans with scrunch I preferred had a 14-15 inch opening. Is there a difference in the way a scrunch looks to you? I'm sure this depends on how long your foot is and how tall you are. I'm on the short side at 5'3". Also I'm still wondering about straight leg lengths and heels. If I get straight legs hemmed for flats (with 14" opening) can I wear them with heels too?
