My spouse's niece just took a job at Stitch Fix, although I'm not sure in what capacity. She had been a "supply chain management/procurement specialist" (I think a fancy name for "buyer") for Nike for the past 18 months in Portland, Oregon, and before that, held similar positions with Loft Outlet at Ann Inc. in NYC. Her fiance lives in SF, so she was interested in moving there from Portland. I'm interested in the business model if only because she works in it. I'm sure that as a size 12/14 and 61, I'm not part of their target demographic but I do like the big data aspects.

I' would have liked to see the shirts they designed.

The article seems so at odds with my experience and the photos of SF clothing bloggers post. Most of the stuff is poorly made and is cheap synthetic stuff that I see for lower prices at retailers.

Very interesting. For some reason I can't copy and paste from the article on my phone, but I was struck by the recognition that what people say they like and what people actually like when it comes down to style can be quite different. Of course we see this on YLF as we experiment and try to identify our style descriptors. It's one thing to send your stylist a Pinterest board, but the data doesn't lie. It's like participant observation research for the fashion world.

This is an interesting article. I have come very close to trying Stitch Fix a number of times, but always hesitate because I worry about not liking any of the items (or feeling that I overpaid for them). I even filled out a profile and created an account (so they already have all my info, lol).

I think because it's so customized, it would be strange not to give them a good bit of info for sizing and styles. I do wonder about companies using my info against me, but in this case... if it helps me find clothes that I love and that fit well, I guess that's up to the individual.

I think it's also interesting that they used the data to create a new style of shirt (wish they would have included a photo). I think that could become really helpful in allowing retailers to create clothing that fit better and appealed to more people.

<https://www.businessoffashion......of-fashion>

I'm not a user of stitch fix, but I find this article interesting in terms of how they look at their customers, and also that customers want to give them data (as opposed to all those other times that Experian or whatever is just using us.)

"in the latest installment of Mary Meeker’s famed annual Internet Trends report, the former Wall Street technology analyst, now a general partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, cites Stitch Fix’s approach as setting “the new normal” in retail.

Increasingly, retailers — including Stitch Fix and, of course, Amazon — are leveraging data to launch private label brands that fill gaps in product assortment and implementing “new distribution models enabling direct-to-consumer commerce in the home,” as Meeker points out in her report. Truly customising the experience adds another layer.

Consider a tough-to-fit category like denim. “Finding jeans that fit is a very transformational experience in general,” Lake says. “One of the things we’re able to do is to match people on inseam. Over time, we’re able to understand which fabric and fabrications are more likely to work for different people.”"
