Liz. great observation. It's the comfort over what looks good thing, isn't it. Thanks!

And Sharan, I found myself doing just the opposite. When I was picking, I said a couple of times... oh, but I need an outfit with x, because I love x... but then stopped myself, because x might be a fav, but x+y+z wasn't. Which was what made me post the question. Interesting huh.

Thanks Suz and TG. I think you are both absolutely right... and I thought of several of the things you mentioned as well. I chose based on how things looked, not felt. And the movement and feel of pieces make a big difference in whether they are favs or not. Outfits also look different in motion. The "freshness" or "newness" of an outfit is definitely a factor in how much one may like it. And like you Suz, chosing was difficult, thus the reason I did it quickly. There was a consistency in many which was really great to see. A huge variety, not a lot of boredom... I saw huge strides in my personal journey.

I do have to say, in looking back a lot of the outfits struck me as "hey, I wore that? That looks good, I need to remember that!" so it was a worthwhile exercise in memory jogging at the least.

Interesting question, Elizabeth. I have a feeling that in picking my own favorite outfits to post on Angie's thread, I passed over some of the photos that I did not like for reasons other than the outfit. (e.g., Where the light wasn't as good, or I didn't like what my hair was doing that day.) But I also actually made a point of selecting photos that included some of my favorite clothes. In my first pass through my outfit photos, I realized I hadn't pulled any with my harem pants, a favorite item this year, so I went back and found some.

This makes perfect sense to me. I'm wearing one of my favorite tops today and one of my favorite scarves. But I would never choose today as one of my favorite outfits. (Other scarves combine better with this top, and the whole combo looks a little ordinary with these jeans.)

However, something did jump out at me from your post: You like long tops over lean bottoms. None of the "not chosen" bottoms you show above are lean; they are all fluid, loose, or baggy. I'm guessing they combine with tops in ways that you don't like as well as your most flattering silhouette.

Elizabeth, some great insights and I also enjoyed reading your other post; I just didn't have time to comment. I think you look terrific; your short hair looks amazing on you! My particular faves are 13, 14 and 18, but you look great, pulled together and polished in all.

One thing I've noticed, off the top of my head - what looks great in a photo is not always what I feel best in. For example, I can observe the flattery of certain colors in photos, same goes for a level of accessorizing, layering, etc. They translate much better and more interestingly (sp??) in photos. BUT in actual real everyday life, the more fuss and 'interest', the less likely I am to feel comfortable in the outfit. Anyways, not sure what it means, but just something I've observed for myself, for what it's worth!

I would say the trick for you next will be to stay the course, while allowing room for change and evolution ... enjoy the process!

Elizabeth, this is a good question. I do think in my own case, some of the items that were real workhorses just didn't photograph as well for some reason, or else -- yes -- they were part of more "daily" kind of outfits so didn't stand out in my memory in the same way. I don't think that's a bad thing. We can learn from looking at what stands out for us -- and from remembering what didn't stand out, but simply worked.

Because we actually need both kinds of outfit in our lives.

To tell you the truth, I had a really tough time picking favourites this year. Not because they all seemed so great but because they all seemed about equal when I looked back at them. Nothing really stood out. (Except the most recent ones, because I was closer to the fun of wearing them -- one reason that at least 3 of my faves came from the most recent week! (That might explain some of the paucity of summer outfits in your picks.)

How could those outfits look "meh" to me when I have loved my closet so much this year and enjoyed wearing my clothes so much? I think it's partly that they had all reached a certain standard and it became harder to pick. And partly because style is always a moving target --- I am ready for the next change!

Anyway, in your case, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Your well loved pieces are no less loved for not making your top outfits. It all depends on how you defined "top" on the day you were choosing. I thought about this a lot. Should it be an outfit I felt fabulous in, or one that I liked the looks of in a photo? (Sometimes those overlap, sometimes, not so much.) Should it be an outfit that recalled happy times, or one that felt inspired in the making? And so on.

I ended up including my Halogen striped skirt twice -- and I have only worn it twice! So part of my choice is based on the fact it's fresh, and it is part of a special occasion capsule.

If you feel you lacked the grounding items for your statement pieces that didn't make it to the top outfits, that is an easy fix. (Well, theoretically, at least.)

When I posted to Angie's "best of 2014" thread, I made the following observation:
What I find fascinating, is that not all of my favourite PIECES made
this "list". Interesting... are my comfortable clothes not flattering?
Are my favs things that look good on others, not me?

And Angie suggested that I start a separate post about this when I had a chance.

Just for ease of reading, I'll post my favourite outfits again. Now, I do need to confess that these were chosen rather quickly. I could have spent hours picking my favourites, so it seemed better to just go with my gut.

Notable absences:
1. White BF jeans. Can't explain this one... I've looked back through my outfits, and DO like many of them.
2. My new workhorse Lululemon cardigan. I think this is because it's so darn comfortable, it's more of an upscale hang out outfit rather than a "I got dressed" outfit. Or maybe it's too close to JFE rather than F.
3. My white leather jacket. A total workhorse, I've worn it twice as much as my black, and navy.
4. Danier leather sleeved cardigan. This is excused, I've only worn it twice.
5. Plione split neck top. I actually thought I HAD picked one of these, so a little surprised. Might have been a slip.
6. Sequined tank ala Aida, and the sticks and stones tee ala Sveta. Love both. Worn several times. Very strange.
7. The silver Trina sandals. Wore All. The, Time. in the summer.
8. My silky Lulu track pants. Again, worn a lot. And almost made the cut a couple of times, just didn't
9. OMG, the Athleta capris!!
10. J.Crew linen pants. So comfortable. Became summer workhorses. But perhaps on the (barely)FE end of things?

A few thoughts...
1. maybe the loved items are worn more, and therefore don't seem "fresh"? 2. Maybe the loved ones are the comfortable ones, and therefore don't seem "styled"? Definitely a combination I'd like to work on going forward, as comfort is important to me, esp on days off. So I WANT to be stylishly comfortable. I don't want to have to choose!
3. I chose very few summer outfits. Is
this because theydon't look as "pulled together" when compared to other
seasons, due to thier simplicity? I actually love the simplicity of
summer dressing.
4. And back to my original question... is there a conflict between the things I love to wear, and the style persona I want to project? ie are my favs actually me? OK, this is way more than I feel I can cope with at the moment. Just as I feel like I've made strides, I quesiton if they are in the right direction? EEK!!
5. Maybe I'm still refining the holes, and do not yet have the basics to let the favorite statement pieces shine. Because some of the above are definitely statement pieces.

I'm going to leave this now and maybe ponder more as the thread evolves. If it does :)

Over to you... any thoughts on my situation?

Do you have thing you love as pieces, but they don't seem to make their way into your favourite overall looks?
