annagybe & Mellllls I understand what you are saying. I read Kibbe the same way L'Abeille did though; that the stars today are malleable in the sense that they don't have "personas" in the way the old stars did. This is why he can't give modern examples. As in the Marlene Dieterich quote that she dressed for her "image' not for herself, not for other women & not for men.
L'Abeille - totally agree with your comments. So glad to hear about your "Gentlewoman Style".

Wonderful to hear from you, Caro! I have missed your voice.

Thanks for the links, it's a very intriguing read. My own experience with Kibbe is fairly recent, and based on reading the snippets from his book that I found on the internet and trying to apply them to myself. So really, more of an intuitive approach, as he recommends (although I think not everyone is wired that way). For me it led to some epiphanies... now instead of trying to hide or "soften" my large features, wide shoulders etc, I have learned to embrace them and evolved my "Gentlewoman Style".

As far as today's stars being "plastic", I didn't read that as "plastic surgery" but as "malleable". A good actress is a chameleon, who can disappear into a part and become someone else.

When I see , for example, a pic
of Julia Roberts touted as an example of Flamboyant Natural, I don't know if she is dressed for a director's vision of a character, or a Vogue shoot, or the role of Celebrity Walking her Dog (or walking the red carpet, displaying a stylist's vision, or I wouldn't see so many blondes washed out by all black).
Whereas the old-time stars had their own distinct "look", or persona, and the parts they were given were made to fit the "character" they already were.

shevia yes his comments on current stars were very interesting. I understand where he is coming from with trying to explain/reclaim. There is a lot of total waffle out there about what Kibbe meant & didn't mean - it is so confusing. I love how he places the responsibility of style development right back where it belongs (imo) - with the individual :)

Great to hear from you Caro! Have to agree that I am more intrigued by the idea of an author emerging decades after his book published to try to reclaim it from his audience. Kind of fascinating. As with Vix, Triumph of Individual Style is my ultimate source for this kind of thing, but I have and enjoyed Kibbe too. Very interesting how he feels today's stars cannot be typed because they are too generic/plastic surgery modified and will read with interest what else he says. Suz's quote is grand.

Sally - I'm so not a "rules" person - which is why I love Angie & her approach. The reason I find Kibbe inspirational is that he doesn't see our unique features as flaws to be normalised :)
unfrumped - missed you too You are so right about authors.
Yes, it is very Angie. They both see kindness & a celebration of the individual as the keys to human interaction :)
Suz, missed you too & that quote gave me the goosebumps :)
Runcarla - Happy Holidays to you Miss you too.

"Only use the test combined with the lists and descriptions. Add to that your deepest instinct about who you are. Think of yourself at the age of 7- or before the world did its thing to you. Remember how you felt about yourself and what already made your heart sing! Remember above all, this as an organic process – not an intellectual one. Listen and hear yourself."

Love this!!

Good read!
The bane of authors--having others interpret and analyze what was written and create whole dynasties from it.
That post seems very Angie-like in some ways, doesn't it? Accepting, be who you are, guidelines not laws, enjoying the process, putting your own self and instincts into it.

Interesting read- I think it shows how ideas progress and how you can become prescriptive. I have only looked briefly at Kibbe- I think these guidelines are awesome for people who like structure or a system to help them work out their closet. I had a stage of following the What Not to wear rules. I guess as times goes on I have learnt where I need to be careful (top length is a big one for me) and where I can experiment- I can wear a greater variety of necklines for example and break the rules!

Diane G - yes it must be hard to write a "guidelines" book & have it taken as gospel.
Hi Style Fan glad you enjoyed the links :)
Hi Vix - I love Trump of Individual Style too. Imo Mathis & Kibbe are saying the same things in different ways i.e. you are unique & expressing who you are is much more satisfying that fitting some cultural norm.
Lynn miss you too :)
Thanks Mellllls.
