Una, feel free to butt in any time! I posted because I need help, and since I love your style (and your jacket), post and butt away! (You and I are in the same profession, you know. I used to joke that I choose it because I liked to tell people what to do, and I liked to be right, little did I know, aye?!?

I looked at the Michael Kors one, but it doesn't really make my heart beat faster. I've done the draped front a lot the last couple of year, and I think I've got drape fatigue. Maybe it drapes too low, too, to my eye. I realized with the Trouve jacket that a low hitting drape doesn't work as well for me. When the points are at my waist they seem to work better. Who knew?

I'm revisiting the other avant-garde jacket post to see if there is anything I've overlooked. Some I loved, but could tell the style wouldn't work well for me. Some were too bold for me. Some I can't wear because the brand and I don't match well (Rag and Bone and Rachael Zoe, *sniff*, sadness). Such is the life of a girl with boobs and no waist. I am open to all ideas, though, so keep 'em coming.

Ariadne, here's a link to the one I have on order:
http://www.helmutlang.com/tuxe.....-outerwear

Also, at HL, these look interesting:
http://www.helmutlang.com/FLAR.....-outerwear

and maybe this:
http://www.helmutlang.com/CRPD.....-outerwear

So maybe there are more options out there for me.

Sorry to keep butting in here. Did you consider the Michael Michael Kors one I posted from NAS? It's pretty edgy but a lot cheaper, in case the HL doesn't work out.

I very much like the last two.

I like the first jacket a lot from the side but not quite as much from the front. It seems to be straining a bit when buttoned and when unbuttoned it looks a bit sloppy. I'd pass on that one if it were me, even though it would give me a pang.

Can't wait to see the Helmut Lang one. Can you link to the style? I don't know which one you're talking about.

If you have jackets that do the job of these, I'd hold on to your $100 & put it towards something fantastic to go with your avant garde jacket when you find it - just a thought. I've been SMC for a few weeks now & I've kept a record of everything I would have bought in the past. It really is frightening - $20 here & $50 there go a long way towards a Rick Owens or Helmut Lang piece.

Carol, I think it may just be gaping because of the way that I was standing to take the photo, but good point and I'll definitely go home and look at that again. Photos can really reveal a lot more than we see originally!

Love? I really liked Jacket 1, but it hasn't garnered much love here. I'm guessing a little too girly. And maybe I'm wearing rose colored glasses about it. I realized too that I have a Halogen jacket from a few years ago that might serve the same purpose as it, so it is probably going back. Jacket 3 is probably my favorite for something sleek. I wish it were a little better quality and just a smidge more edgy. If it were cut up further in the back, that would do it. I think that the Helmut Lang smoking jacket and Una's Theory jacket set such a high standard that I'm having a hard time settling. Still at $50 each, these jackets are very comfortable purchases for me--even two of them.

For avant-garde, I'm definitely still holding out for love. For these? Just looking for a fun fling.

Of these I like jacket 3 best. I'm tending toward extremes lately though, and this is extremely minimal. And it's like my Theory jacket. I'm puzzling over what makes the Theory cut so fab and edgy-feeling, instead of boring and unadorned.

Something about jacket 1 makes me feel like it will look dated soon? I don't know why.

Una, I couldn't walk away from it. It wasn't right in the smaller size, and the chance that it will work in the larger is pretty minimal, but still. The chance that it could work is worth the risk.

Interesting that the last jacket is garnering such love so far. I like it, but thought it looked a little suity when I was looking at the photos. Apparently the texture and finish really bring it up.

JR, it's hard isn't it? Jacket 3 is kind of plain, but in a "could be a great background player" sort of way. Jacket 4 pushes it a bit, but maybe in a "never a background player, but a star-maker" sort of way. Then again, Helmut may knock them out of the running entirely.

The jacket search continues. I was at H&M on Friday and found two possibilities for a sweet, girly throw over jacket. I also found two options for a possible avant-garde topper.

For a few hours I thought I'd found the frills at the hips jacket in a larger size. It was on hold, but before I could get to the store, it was accidentally returned to the sales floor and was gone by the time I got there. Not meant to be.

Sweet and Girly:
Jacket 1 (Pics 1 to 4)
is a cotton jacket, so feels great to the touch. I like the girly pleats all around. No bunching on the side even though the picture with it closed looks like it.

Jacket 2 (Pics 5 to 7)
is similar. Poly blend, but soft. The pockets have little pleats. I'm worried this might just look like a work appropriate suit jacket rather than a going out on a date jacket.

More Avant-Garde
Jacket 3 (Pics 8 to 10)
is a sleek jacket with ruched sleeves. It looks a little like the Helmut Lang smoking jacket and Una's Theory jacket, but a little more restrained. I like it a lot, but I wonder if part of what makes those other two so great is the fact that they are a little extreme. Isn't this just a basic with a twist?

Jacket 4 (Pics 11 to 13)
is a shiny, coated linen fabric. Really interesting texture and shine. I'm worried it may read too summery and I'm not a fan of the orange lining (love the concept, but not the execution on this one). The orange makes turned up sleeves more of a challenge.

There will likely be an avant-garde jacket showdown soon. I ordered the Helmut Lang jacket in the next size up and I have an ASOS jacket in a similar shape on its way. In the meantime....

Are any of these 10s?
