Hi Carter, thanks for returning with the source picture, which is truly a lovely one of you!

Looks like artificial light based on the window reflection, which always adds another fun twist. But I see what may be cool deep brown, cool light pink, brighter white, and orange in there.

IME one of the best ways to "play" with color systems *other* than using fabrics or cards that have been developed for such things is to test colors on yourself in natural light, or look for photos of yourself taken in natural light. Then pop those photos against the closest palettes and see what seems to fit.

Even though our eyes and photos can throw off results, I think this helps narrow it down by helping us see "ok, so basically wearing this warm, semi-intense yellow shirt I look pretty good placed against photos of X, Y, Z palettes."

FWIW, I fall into the camp of preferring personal palettes (drawn from body colors and complements to those shades) vs a hard-core "system." And while I don't think we're necessarily drawn to the shades that flatter us the most, I do think we know when a certain color or item looks really good or really bad on us.

So that's always my rec, too -- start with what looks good and explore from there, and start with what looks terrible and see how far away from that you can get!

I think CocoLion mentioned in her color thread that she sees some personal color "afters" and thinks, [paraphrasing] "YIKES." I ditto that hard but won't name names....

Generally the personal color analysts who create custom palettes [often derived from pioneer Suzanne Caygill's approach] produce results that are a lot more integrated to my eye.

Here's one analyst -- Kathy at BeautyValued -- whose results skew WOW in a great way IMO. Would sure love to yap about color with her!

[On an unrelated note, you look so much like someone I know. Let me know if you have a PNW relative. ]

I'm going to echo some of the others and say Dark, Winter and Muted. A couple of the Autumn colours seem ok, but not as many colours as in the other three I mentioned.

Smittie, so glad you like some warm palettes on me. They're such fun colors.

I definitely think you're a warm. I think that light lime green and light yellow on the spring palette would look nice on you in the summer as would the corals and peaches. Warm pinks look quite a bit better on you than the cool ones, I can say that for sure.

For the winter, you could move to the autumn palette. I do think you could do bright colours, though on the warm side of bright. Bright tomato red, for example.

Hi Carter --

What type of color(s) were you wearing when that photo was taken and what was the lighting like? Because that's what your skin is responding to (and what's helping your eyes and hair shine) -- and seems like it was a pretty good choice!

< Start Debbie Downer > The little palette thing is fun but more a reflection of what shades relate to your coloring vs what shades enhance it. < end Debbie D. >

I'd love it if you added some shots wearing the shades you think you look best in these days and see what responses you get -- sure, it won't be definitive but it'll likely be more useful.

For some of you, this is so clear...Winter, dark and Muted. I assume that's the most likely answer, but I wish it were more clear to me;-).

Beth Ann...always full of good questions! I do think our coloring is very similar. You can take more contrast and brightness than I can though. At least when you were here, your hair was a couple shades darker than your profile picture. Oddly, I'm not wearing much color at all these days because I'm not loving color with intense black at the moment. No clue why...

Also, you've hit on another issue...the move to the beach. My beach vacation (even during the Winter) wear has always been lighter and brighter, with very little black and no gray. I really have no idea how my current wardrobe of black, gray and deep, dark colors will feel when we're there full-time. As far as changes over time...tons! I used to wear lots of brights...lime green, orange, hot pink. Also brown, rust, khaki and olive. Red and Pink became more prevalent for me in my 40s, and black finally pushed out brown. Until the last year or two, I NEVER wore any shade of blue (except for denim). I have now find a few shades I like, but they're difficult to find.

Fascinating, Carter! I wear dark purple (but I like it clear, not muted or grayed), fuchsia or magenta instead of warm pink (which is "ew" on me), sapphire and cobalt, deep red, turquoise and teal. More similar than I thought. I suspect my palette just brighter and slightly cooler than yours. You also seem to shine in your neutrals, too, while I feel like I struggle with neutrals.

Do you think your upcoming move will affect your color choices, due to change in lifestyle, climate, or environmental norms? Have your favorites changed a lot over time, or mostly remained the same?

Thanks for all the input! Dark and Muted seem to make grade. The rest is split. Maybe Beth Ann's "warm side of cool" (and the alternative cool side of warm) is where I sit.

Beth Ann, my favorite colors (to wear): eggplant, warm pink, sapphire, deep red, and deep turquoise. Black and gray are favorite neutrals. I really like chocolate brown as well, but investing in a brown capsule doesn't seem worth it.

L'Abeille, that is interesting, and funny!

I never wanted to be a Spring - I wanted to be a Winter (in the 1980s icy pastels and bold colours were where it was at for me). Spring colours are not very "cool/hip" are they? They are pretty and flattering - and just how I love my garden to look. As a blonde woman growing up I always wanted to be the "smart" girl - not the "pretty" girl, and spring did not fit into that at all.

Thirty or so years on I still do not firmly identify with Spring colours although I do wear some and know they do suit me. I love coral and melon, kelly green, sea blues and ivory. I wear warm pinks and reds very happily. But I do struggle to find pieces in these colours in the styles I like.
Carter - Sorry for highjacking! My favourite is the Muted Palette on you, but I can also see many of the dark, autumn and winter ones working too. I don't see you as a Spring or a Warm, but I think most of the others work well. I think you are on the Warmer end of the Cool colours if that makes sense - the eggplants, blues and reds look great and I know you look fab in white and black.

Haha my daughter was reading earlier today about seasonal colour palettes and what it means when you are evaluated by a professional and disagree with the result.

They said it could be one of 3 things:
1. You were typed wrong.
2. You were typed correctly, but don't like the colors.
3. You hate closure.

I agree that you look good in all of the palettes. I tried it and the palettes I thought I looked best in were Spring and dark. Thanks for suggesting this - it was fun and informative.

Angie, I had pretty much decided that I was a dark Winter, but now I'm not quite as convinced. As a kid (back when there were only 4 seasons), I was typed an Autumn. However, as I've spent much less time in the sun as an adult, my skin is paler and my dair is darker. My hazel eyes have even started to morph a bit gray.

That said, there seem to be colors in both Autumn and Winter palettes that look horrible on me, while other colors in both palettes look good. Maybe I just don't fit in one box or the other?

I know I don't feel like bright suits me anymore. Deep, saturated colors across both seasonal palettes seem to work best, I think.

(I'm a slam dunk for the Bright & Warm myself with bit of the Dark and Autumn thrown in).

They do all look good on you!
I would say I prefer the autumn and the muted the best though.
I might have a go with this myself a bit later
