Wow! Thanks Jj...that coat looks pretty interesting. My one worry is that it would probably be too big for me. No xs, and it is a "regular" fit (meaning not tailored). Hmmm.

I think I need to do some in store browsing this week.

VC, thank you for the Lord and Taylor link, too. You're SO right about The Bay website. But they do carry quite a lot of the same stuff since they've been taken over. I will check them out!

Found another navy option with an interesting collar. I'm not sure about the innner jacket, but it could come in handy for your temps. There are all sorts of extra % off coupons.

I think the Club Monaco blue trench is gorgeous-looking (at least online, it's not like I've seen it in person), but it does seem short-ish. Not a regular-length trench coat. Still though, it looks like a nice coat doesn't it?

If you're heading into T.O. anyway - might as well pop into Club Monaco and see what they have. The Bay is usually pretty good too, it's just that their website is never up to par in terms of giving any sort of clue as to what they have to offer.

That said, I know that Lord & Taylor bought out the Bay, and looking around at Lord & Taylor's website, I came across this petite coat:

http://www.lordandtaylor.com/e.....lor/205061

I have no idea if the Bay has it though.

Good luck on your spring trench coat search, and I'll be looking forward to hearing about what you find.

Oooh! Thanks, VC and Shannon! I don't have Jacob or Club Monaco in Kingston, alas...but I might be in Toronto briefly next weekend and could see if I can hit one up. I like the blue trench. Worried it and the Cleo might be too short....they are a terrific length for pants but not so great for dresses, I suspect.

Tara, thanks for weighing in on the London Fog. I suspected as much!

And Rae, I'm not sure the VC coat would be warm enough. It is a concern. But if I can layer I'll probably be all right with it. My wool coat would probably feel too warm for me in 50 degree temps (avg. NYC March temp). So that gives you an idea of what I'm used to.

Suz - yes VC did make the stripy top that some of us bought (me included!).

Do you have Cleo/Cleo Petities in your area? If so, there's this trench which I've seen IRL - the quality is quite good for the price but I don't know how you feel about red. It's a petite only and the fit is good for us vertically challenged types! Just another suggestion.

What do you think of this Club Monaco Emma Short Trench?

Jacob also has a spring trench that comes in white/ivory, yellow or pink...not sure if they carry petites, and not sure if the white/cream is what you're after, but I think it has potential.

Suz - I tried on that London Fog that you linked to up top.

Not a good color for me. I was hoping for a nice cream, but it was pretty much a standard light beige.

I did like the style, as I tend to prefer the traditional trench coat look.

But it was a no for me.

Hi Suz,

I think I prefer the London Fog one much better, unfortunately not the colour! Neither the black nor the stone. The LE one is not as cute, it looks like it's more boxy. I agree with the above suggestions for navy or Boden's prints. I would totally see you in the Rainy Day Mac. (Just to confuse you further...)

Joy, that's good to know about the quality of your Vince Camuto jacket. Haven't pulled the trigger yet but am tempted. Didn't Vince Camuto make some of those stripy tops that some YLFers bought, too?

Then I saw those fun Boden coats! I like the navy bubble and the plain navy with the green bubble lining; those DO look springy! The reviews are good. Hmmmm....

Goes away to think some more...

Hi Suz! Reading all the way down the thread of comments, I was thinking, "Navy, navy, she needs NAVY." Then I clicked on your Vince Camuto link. I think that one's a winner. See what people know about the quality, but the price seems great, the length won't overwhelm you and the closure even looks a bit arty to me. Navy can look wintery when it needs to, but also reads: spring! so I think it's the perfect solution for you. And now we're allowed to wear it with black, so can it get any better than that?

My sister gave me an xs petite LE short cotton trench in black. It's a good basic or running around but is fading. Wool would be more waterproof than it is.
If the Vince Camuto jacket is any indication, their trench will be well made, especially for the price.
Have you tried thrift/consignment? I found a great pink trench at the Goodwill for $3 that's like new. Unfortunately it's a bit too large but has been valuable for layering jackets under it.

Rae...do you mean that collar tab thingie in the Calvin Klein jacket doesn't actually work? Because if you closed up the open part and buckled that little thingie, it would be closed (I think??)

Amy, I know. And my wool coat actually has a bit of alpaca in it, making it even better in the wet.

BUT. There is no denying that wool begins to SMELL funny if it gets too wet.

And...well...perhaps it is because I have to wear coats for so much of the year, but I associate wool with winter. KWIM? Plus, I wear the red coat with my winter outfits. And late March feels as if it might be time (esp. in New York, south of where I live) to "spring" things up a bit.

Still...I adore my wool coat and have LOVED wearing it in many conditions this winter, so if I absolutely can't find a trench that I like, that will be the one coming with me. It's amazingly lightweight, comfortable, versatile and easy to wear.

I found this one on sale. No button out liner, but depending on fabric, not a deal-breaker. Anyone have opinions on Vince Camuto quality? I don't know it.

Wool is actually a good fiber to wear in rainy weather. It initially sheds most water and keeps you warm. It has to get REALLY drenched to soak through. In rainy Seattle, I prefer a wool coat to other fibers most of the year.

From http://www.woolcote.co.nz/whywool.html:

Wool is a Hydroscopic Insulator

This means that wool can absorb moisture without becoming wet to touch. Wool’s natural insulation ability is not affected by moisture because of its built in natural crimp. As the fibres naturally repel each other, an amount of air is retained which provides an insulation effect. The fibre has the capability of absorbing up to 30% of its own weight in moisture, before it becomes wet to touch.

------

I'm not saying this to deter you from buying a trench...go for it...but you might want to reconsider your wool coat too.

Suz, one thing I noticed is that many of the cute colorful trenches out there don't button up all the way! This one, for example: I love the color and the buttons... but wait, there is no way to secure the top of the collar in case of rain and wind! This is one of the reasons I'm eyeing the LE, even though I am not jumping for joy, either.

Amy, thank you for the links. Yes, the expensive ones are always the best, aren't they? Sigh...

I may check the quality on the Gap one, if they have it at my store. And you're right, Dianthus...I ought to hie myself over to Winners.

We have a short spring/fall, too, though not as short as Winnipeg's. And so ideally I'd like one of those coats with the removable liners. It will probably be quite cold still in New York when I am there, but possibly rainy, and not great weather for my wool coat or my puffer. I don't really have anything else. I think the right trench would be a good investment for me, because I like the style and know I'll wear it.

I like the trench but find it is such a classic that I often buy them in colors. My latest one is a soft metallic animal print. (Yes, I know that sounds horribly unconservative but I couldn't resist).

Have you tried Winners Suz? I often find nice name brand trench coats there at great prices. I find our spring and fall season to be so short that I don't invest a great deal in this type of piece though. We seem to go from winter to summer in a few weeks. I suspect your slightly more temperate climate may make a big difference in terms of the length of the transition seasons.

Suz, I'm glad to hear your mother is ok.

Here are some trench coats I found:

http://www.vincecamuto.com/Coa.....yOd9gYlRCw

http://www.gap.com/browse/prod.....goafcid150

This one is expensive, but if I suddenly inherited a fortune, I'd be all over it:

http://www1.bloomingdales.com/.....9FSwQmaRjA

It's on her thread of WIW catch ups. It's not a trench but a down puffer. Still, I figure if that can work for her, maybe a trench could work for me. There is something about the pic that isn't making me jump for joy, though...it doesn't look great on the model. But I do like the idea of the button out liner.

Angie warned me away from a stone colored trench on Ebay a while back, too. And since we wear many of the same colors, that makes sense.

The LE trench is my top choice ATM. I don't know if I am going to bite the bullet now or not, though. I can't say it makes me giddy inside, but the fit could change that. I seem to have missed Rita's coat... will have to search!

Thank you, Angie. This is my suspicion, too. I definitely can't wear khaki. Black is iffy. And you would think with all the colourful trenches around this year I'd be in heaven.

But...most of them lack the quality construction and details that make my practical side happy.

Or they are the wrong colour for me. That LE red, for example, is probably too true and bright a red to really look great on me. I saw your recommendation for Gallery trenches and found one at Nordstrom...but it's yellow, which for me is worse than soul-sucking. More like soul-destroying!

Navy would actually be perfect for me. But I'd happily take cream, bluish-red, most other blues, even purple.

Hi Suz! We have missed you around here. So glad to hear Mom is doing better and your life is getting back to normal. It can be very exhausting and challenging, so I hope you have taken good care of yourself too. My mom was doing much better after her last set back, but then fell last week. Luckily, she didn't break anything, just sore and bruised. I have some relief now because my brother is staying with her, bless his heart.

I think the longer trench is an excellent choice and can see the Stone color working so well for your coloring. And if you don't have a trench already, a neutral color makes more sense. I love the Nordstrom style, but wasn't able to open the Lands End link.

So happy to see your smiling face around here again.

Stone and cream are completely different colours. I can wear cream till the cows come home, but stone is soul sucking. I'd be careful with stone, Suz - especially because your hair is light.

I vote a colour.

And then there is this from Land's End. I worried I'd be sized out, but if the XS petite fits Rita (she just got a down coat from LE that looks great on her) then I think maybe it would work for me, too..

Welcome back Suz, I missed you! I am glad to hear your mom is doing well.
I have London Fog trench and love it - but it is a "fun" purple color :-)
I think Stone color can be fun if it is a right tone for you. Just look at Angie in her cream trench fom yesterday post! The shape is very classic as well.
It is machine washable so no worries for getting it dirty and spending a fortune on dry cleaning.

Thank you, Deborah. My mum is doing pretty well. I think it is hard for her, but she is also busy with her new exercises and that gives her something to do, at least! No booties for the next while, just a big tall knee boot!

Suz, I like the trench and I am sure you could make it fun (polka dot scarf, etc). I would like to see you wearing the stone as I quite like it. Possibly wearing scarves or colors underneath would lift it. It looks like a classic piece that could become quite a workhorse.

Good to see you back How is your mum doing?

Okay...following along with Rae's thread, but also need to start one of my own. This coat is not "fun." But does it look potentially good?

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/lo.....40-0-0-1-1

There's a shorter version with a detachable hood, too.

I am wondering about this for my New York trip (and after, obviously!) I don't have a decent rain coat. A gear coat, but that's it.

I would prefer a fun colour. And am not sure I could wear this "stone" successfully. More successfully than beige, that's for sure. But I might need to ensure colour near the face.
