Gosh, I’m sorry I left some questions unaddressed. Posting from the road, we would go some days with no internet or cell service and I lost track of responding to so many things. </p> <p>Jules, my Instagram is @janetlittlejeffers— I use it to promote my art but it’s also a bit personal in nature too: pics of our dogs, snippets of daily life, etc. Anyone here is welcome to follow if you are so inclined! </p> <p>We didn’t have a tight itinerary starting out — in fact, we were open to maybe even getting to the west coast, and we didn’t have a firm return date. We were winging it, but I navigated and planned just a few days ahead along the way, letting my husband know options for destinations and then finding campsites (a combination of dispersed camping at non-developed land, campgrounds, and Harvest Host locations). We adopted a strategy for only driving a certain number of miles or hours in a day, and aimed to get to our campsite by a certain hour each time — finding a good level site for a 27’ trailer plus vehicle in the dark is not fun! But we avoided that for the most part and it all worked out really well! </p> <p>We had talked about doing something like this ever since 2010, when I did my own solo journey for 2.5 months, with a Prius and a tiny teardrop trailer — driving from MD to CA and OR and then back, exploring all along the way. It was a fantastic experience and I wanted to finally share some of these sights with my husband. </p> <p>As time went on during this trip, my husband had some things he needed to attend to back at the ranch in TX, so our trip ended up being six weeks. We are at the ranch now and heading back east tomorrow. I think six weeks worked well for us — we got to see a lot, and by the end of that period of time, we are ready for long luxurious showers and our nice big bed! </p> <p>Traveling with dogs is a whole other wrinkle. It was really fun to have them with us, but it limits you in terms of where you can visit and hike, and for how long. National park trails are not typically dog-friendly. But we adapted and loved having Sunny and Woody with us!</p> <p>I’ll add another final post with some photos from the last leg of the trip, for those who are interested.<br /> Thanks for all the lovely words! It’s been a terrific adventure. Some challenges, of course, but it’s been mostly an amazing time, with lots of incredible sights and good memories. I’m not using my “real” camera every day as my husband gets impatient with my relentless picture-taking, even when it’s just the phone! Some of the pictures I’m sharing were actually taken from a moving vehicle (it’s hard to find pull off spots in a big rig!). </p> <p>We are finding it really freeing to have this self-contained method of travel. Our contact with other people has been minimal. We go grocery and supply shopping here and there, and get some carry-out meals a couple of times a week, and wear our masks even though in many places people seem oblivious. But we chatted with a really nice young man who pumped our gas in Price, UT yesterday who had Covid, and his parents (ages 59 and 62) had it too. It took him two months to feel normal again and his parents are still recovering. It was a stark reminder to keep taking it seriously. </p> <p>We voted by mail — dropped off our absentee ballots at a post office in Green River, WY. We are planning on being somewhere with decent internet access on Nov 3 so we can watch election return coverage, and praying that it is a happier experience than that night was four years ago. </p> <p>Other than trying to make sure my clothing selections each day are clean enough and appropriate for the weather, I am all but oblivious of my style for now. A mouse got into our trailer at one point and managed to ruin two items — both black tee shirts, including my favorite Madewell tee, and a brand new WoolX tee (that one was at least salvageable for sleepwear). And my old Lucky straight leg jeans developed a weird stain after being washed in a campsite laundry facility. Oh well! This is why I bring stuff camping that can get destroyed. </p> <p>Hoping you are all doing well! </p>
