Go closet edit support squad!
MRL, I hear you. I was initially tempted to order more than the 2 I have (in other colors) but am now glad I did not, but glad I have what I have. As in discussion on duplication quandary.

I'm a gradual/slow/reluctant purger too. I always use a holding zone and frequently dip back into it. ;)

I'm glad your sweaters are working for you now! I used to want to be able to remix things as much as possible, but now I'm happier with things can maybe can only be worn with one 'type' of bottom or topper or whatever but work perfectly with that style. After all, who cares if I'm wearing variations on the same silhouette or two 90% of the time?!

I am a very slow closet purging myself. Big sweeps take me a long time to do and I've usually been thinking of a big purge for many months. I find smaller purges much easier to handle. It sounds like you have found your cold weather BF jean formula, neat!

For pieces like the long sweaters that you mentioned, maybe you could compromise. Keep one in the color you wear the most or feel is most flattering
and get rid of the rest, That way you aren't completely closing the door on a look, yet you are still paring down. Good luck!

I'm a fan of bits and pieces, UF! Sometimes the big sweep is just too frightening for people, and they end up holding onto more things than they should because seeing it all go at once is unsettling.

I also hear you about not always knowing how you'll use something. I usually figure out the best way to use something a couple of days after I've gotten rid of it. :)

As I noted in a response on the NY's resolution query, I'm doing some honing in bits and pieces that may be as good as some prior big dramatic sweeps.

Still finding items in brown or true red that are complicating things--it's funny that I did not just hunt down every one, but gradually seem to discover items lurking and go, yup, not working.

I also am using a line from closet organizing tips of, "get rid of items that don't feel like you". Of course, that's just another way of saying not your style, but since I still have trouble articulating what that is, the simpler version is working.

Some of the "not me" were experiments, and so it can be hard to admit they didn't work. Or need to quit worrying about "why not" and just move on.

Also, sometimes it's not the item but how it's worn, and I should keep the item, but cross off wearing it the way that is "not me".

For example, I have a couple of long-ish sweaters that I thought for sure would be for work trousers. And, they do work okay , but didn''t have the quite the vibe I'm going for. So feeling bad, like that could have been a mistake. Then, along comes colder weather and wearing lined BF jeans which have a relatively low rise, and those sweaters look just right with the jeans. Maybe not what I'd planned, but now I'm wearing them regularly as the go-to tops for that and not trying to make them mix with everything.
