SF, I’m sorry to hear about your brother’s situation. As a former graphic designer, that hits close to home. Many of my old publishing and design colleagues have moved into other fields of work — many of those who have not are in tenuous positions or have lost jobs.

I also relate to the weight gain issue. I’m in good health for the most part — I hiked 14 miles the other day including a strenuous morning climb, and I do Pilates 3x a week and watch my eating. But I seem to be stuck at my current size. So I’m doing my best to accept and dress the body I have, and let go of clothes from the past that don’t serve me in one way or another. Sounds like you are doing the same!

Ah, Staysfit, I do remember now about the weight gain, yes you did post about that. A weight change happened to me in the upward direction after menopause and in a downward direction starting 2019. The first time I was expanding the wardrobe (which is how the numbers increased to unmanageable) by buying larger items faster than editing out smaller items. The second time I haven’t had to edit out as much as many of my pants still fit due to elastic waists. And it’s over 6 years since the loss started anyway so there is some editing naturally.
It’s good that you feel better as though an anchor has been removed and yes you had an interesting time with colour assessments along the way.
Hope you enjoy getting new stuff for your summer!

Janet, perhaps, I should have emphasized my feelings about the closet edit more than my AI experimentation! My stepbrother, in his early 50’s, a photographer and graphic designer recently lost his job. He was replaced by AI technology.

Interesting. I’m glad you’ve had such a positive experience! (I’m a ChatGPT skeptic — my husband has used it a lot, but I am wary of AI engines because of the way they mine data from creatives and the resources they consume. We have also discovered that sometimes it outright gets things very, very wrong.)

I like your insights about closet editing. I have a small collection of holding zone items that are a little too small now, but I’ve been slowly letting them go. I’m not fond of the space and the mental energy they take up.

JenniNZ, I agree wholeheartedly with your points. First, it would be ridiculous of me to impulsively cull so much, especially if using ChatGPT to make the final decisions of what to keep or toss. Let me reassure you, I did not. I experimented with AI to learn whether it would verify or refute my thinking. I discovered that ChatGPT improved my theoretical understanding of color. It aided my ability to understand why I love some items and why others haven’t felt quite right. I found it fascinating that it chose the very makeup colors I personally favor when given my foundation color and photo reference even though there is a huge range of possible options of colors that would work for me from my favorite makeup brand.

Second, I did not suddenly or impulsively cull anything. I maintained a large holding zone in my wardrobe for over a year because of substantial enough weigh gain to make this clothing snug. I posted about this previously on YLF. Despite my efforts with diet and exercise, my scale is not budging. With that in mind, and because I desperately need summer clothing that fits, I decided it’s time to edit and make space.

Third, having all the clothes on hold while waiting to see if I lose weight has felt like a mental/emotional anchor. I feel lighter now that they are gone. In the future when anyone on the forum asks if they should keep their snug items or maybe their large items, my advice would be “No!”.

Third, for size reference, I filled three 13 gallon kitchen trash bags. I am truly proud I removed this much, not dismayed or embarrassed. In past edits I held onto things for the very reasons you mentioned. Emotional attachment, sunk costs, practicality, etc. Nothing fit, so editing became easy, and defining my color palette was an interesting exercise along the way.

Fourth, most clothing I culled was well worn except the red dress on top of the bags. I don’t have any regrets or worries about sunk costs or failure to get my moneys worth from the items. They served me well when they fit, and now they do not.

Having said the above, I still sorted things based on color, it’s true there was an mix of color seasons and items that were placeholders, and I still had ChatGPT do makeup recommendations and style suggestions as I said at the beginning of the thread, etc. I didn’t mention that a majority of the items being used in the comparison photos were snug…it was an editorial choice. I see now it would have been a helpful detail.

I don’t understand how you can just suddenly cull 3 large bags because of this. I think I have far more emotional attachment to my wardrobe items than that. I would like to be like Brooklyn is aiming for, to love everything in my wardrobe. Or if not love, then very much appreciate because of usefulness. It’s difficult to “love” a plain black layering top, for instance, but the 3 that I own are worn a lot because they let a tunic or some other third piece shine, something I do love.
I’m also someone who doesn’t do well with not having “got my money’s worth” out of items. I understand the sunk cost theory intellectually. But emotionally I don’t cope well with having paid for something and not getting use out of it. A hangover from older parents who lived through the Great Depression I think!

Interesting! I find chatGPT weirdly biased in some ways - like it is trying too hard to please. I can understand this on a theoretical level as it is pulling responses from a bunch of humans that also tend to want to please, but it is a bit unnerving. That said, I think you are making great use of it as a tool.

Suz, As I consider my approach to learning about fashion/style, and maybe to many topics, I start with an analytical/scientific eye. I apply emotion and intuition after understanding theoretical foundations. ChatGPT becomes the teacher, and provides visual examples and quick feedback. It’s like having an on call color consultant. I want to believe this process will result in improved confidence and trust in my color choices. Time will tell….and for now, it is definitely helping to confirm gut level intuitions!

LJP, I’m blanking on the name now but there are Facebook groups, where you post a picture of an area in your house and ask for ideas and people jump in with suggestions accompanied by AI generated photos. It’s great.

Suntiger, I agree that lighting and texture make a difference, online and in person. I once ordered something that looked pink online and when it arrived it was orange. I also did not rely on ChatGPT to make the decisions for me as much as to confirm the decisions I was already making for myself, using my eyes, my color chips, etc. I thought it was interesting to see how accurate it could be, and how remarkably well it could distinguish the nuances of colors.

Dee, LJP, interesting uses for ChatGPT. Using it to help with shopping made things go much faster. I admit that was super helpful.

Angie, I wholeheartedly agree and am certain AI cannot tell how humans feel about certain colors or color combinations. There is no emotional element or perhaps creative element involved. I also doubt ChatGPT could select and style the correct mix of clothing items to equal the uniquely personal selections we make for ourselves based on sartorial preferences, taste, background, sentiments and much more, etc. It cannot create individual style sensibility. AI can only do the concrete activity of determining if one color works next to another or even in a group of colors based on a reference, which in this case is a continuum of light/dark, cool/warm, soft/bright AKA seasonal color analysis.

What Dee said!

Also what Suntiger said about colours and textures. Fascinating nonetheless!

What AI can't do - and what human colour theory experts don't do either, unfortunately - is consider how colours AFFECT each other. That makes a huge difference when you wear them in an outfit. Personally, I consider that quite important.

Glad you're getting good use out of your AI adventures, Staysfit! The method can be a great starting point - and that can't hurt. Very satisfying to have thinned out your wardrobe thoughtfully, and be more organized :)

While I am personally not comfortable sharing any photo with AI (or online in general), I find it fascinating.
Lighting and texture, however, can have a huge effect on how colors appear in both the dressing room and online, so be a bit cautious.

Haha, yes it is rather easy to go off the deep end with chatgpt, but it looks like it's really helping you facilitate a great functioning wardrobe in colours that you'll enjoy wearing.

I've used it for footwear suggestions for my foot issues, menu ideas for food sensitivies, paint colour options for decor. It's not perfect but it's always interesting to see what it suggests.

Not only did AI help with my edit, it is now helping me shop, plan my wardrobe and put together outfits. It even made makeup suggestions from my favorite makeup brand. LOL!

I paid for a subscription, so I am no longer using the free version. I cannot say this would work well otherwise.

My current wardrobe has a mix of color seasons, some not quite right, but they have been good placeholders. I thought it would be fun to sort everything into the correct palette. I could do this on my own, but I decided to play and to figure out how to have ChatGPT help with the work.

I laid items on my bed, 8-9 at a time, and took photos. Then I asked ChatGPT items matched my color season. It divided items into three categories. Excellent, bad and borderline. It provided clear reasons why the items fell into each category. For example, for a bad item, it might say it is too warm, too bright, too light and dusty, it will make your look skin look dull, etc: For good items it also provided reasons. For borderline items it offered a pros and cons list and often offered to give ways to style the item to make it work better with my color seasons. The remedies might also include makeup suggestions.

ChatGPT did particularly well delineating items that were on the borderline between being okay and too warm for me. It was definitely better in seeing warm and cool tones in those items where I had a hard time seeing it. For example, some shades of green can skew warmer or cooler, and knowing the line between them was particularly tough for me. The same is true for all colors and some neutrals like grays, whites and taupes. ChatGPT got it right each time based on comparison with my color chips and also when compared with stark white and/or other color references used for this purpose. I grew to trust the assessments, especially because the items it recommended to eliminate were items I rarely wore; I realized I never felt great wearing these items, and it probably was because of the level of warmth or brightness not being ideal. My primary neutral is currently dark navy, which is not ideal, so I pared this down to the items I wear most, and my next step will be to consider what neutral to use as I replace them when they wear out. I also have a ton of gray. When I finished the edit, my closet was much thinner, and also looked much more uniform in the depth and intensity of the tones.

Regarding the makeup. I asked it to look at my favorite mineral makeup and to select some looks based on my coloring. It amazed me that I already owned most of the colors it suggested. Once again, pretty much spot on, I am sure this is not the result everyone would get, however, I am having some good luck here.

Finally, I asked for some help finding new essential tees. My old grey tees are worn out, and in need of replacement, I gave ChatGPT three possible shopping sites and asked for options for a gray tee and it came back with a number of possibilities. I ordered two tees from Mott & Bow. Fingers crossed I will like them. ChatGPT advised I avoid athletic gray. I what that meant and ChatGPT pulled examples from web shopping sites of athletic gray vs the type of gray I should seek.

In all, I culled three bags of clothes from my holding zone and main closet. They will go to DD, her best friend, or giveaway. I wish I had remembered to take a before picture!
