Very timely post, MsThrifty...I'm new, too, and in the midst of doing the same thing. However, I'm feeling like I'm in a bit of a jeans rut, so I'm trying to find ways to incorporate more skirts and dresses (even though it's the middle of winter where I am). I'm also in desperate need of some toppers and heavier winter wear--jumpers/sweaters, etc. There's nothing like working within a pared-down wardrobe to make you realize what you simply must have!

Oh, the terminology! It drives us all to distraction.

I am not sure I have it all straight myself, but here's my understanding.

Angie uses these terms as they are used in the trade.

When she talks about "basics" she is talking about real basics. That is, undergarments. The basis of any outfit.

Essentials are what you are talking about.

Some people make lists that are supposed to stand for anybody. But Angie's more flexible. What's essential for one will not be for another. One person's jeans might be another person's casual skirt. Etc.

Workhorses are those items -- they might be essentials or they might not -- that you find yourself wearing again and again within a given season. You reach for them more often than you reach for other items. For example...last fall, one of my personal workhorses was a cropped fuchsia jacket. Was it essential? Well, given the colour, obviously not. Yet I reached for it ten times more often than I reached for my plain navy jacket.

In terms of your list: That makes sense to me. Jeans are a staple in my life also, and in many women's.

With the jackets -- I often find that what works best with jeans or trousers won't necessarily work best with a dress. It is not a matter of colour. It's proportion. Sometimes they will work interchangeably, but not always. So that's something you may wish to consider as you update.

Sounds like you've got a good handle on your upgrade needs, always a good place to be. Angie has some great blog posts about wardrobe essentials and wardrobe basics. These two in particular are very handy, and both have links to other similar posts:

I am in the process of updating a few of my basics for the fall winter season this year. One reason is I have lost a little weight and the fit is off, and another reason some things are just outdated. How I define basics and what are my needed basics may not be the same as others, but they are for me at least 3 pairs of basic jeans-and one has to be black, two basic blazer type jackets. These need to be colors that can go over jeans, skirts, dresses etc, at least 1 basic dress that can be dressed up or down, 2 pairs of basic pants that are not jeans-usually one black and another some sort of tan color. A black blazer I was going to cast out but after trying it on with my newer skinny jeans, rolled to the tops of low boots, am going to keep it. I thought it looked too long and too boxy but with the jeans looks good to me.
I guess on here you are calling what I call basics workhorses --anyhow I am new on here and just getting the hang of the terminology, etc.
