Oh, fun pictures! The last three are definitely 1920s. Fabulous ensemble in #9! In #10, it looks like they went swimming without proper swim suits. My guess is she borrowed a pajama suit of his.

I remember the 50’s as a horrible time for any female that did not have a certain hourglass body type and was so relieved when Twiggy came on the scene and it was ok to be thin.

I’ve come back to this thread after thinking overnight about the photos. As much as I like the style of 40s and 50s, the style of the 20s is my favorite — it was groundbreaking — and I find it elegant whereas the 40s and 50s I’d classify as stylish. Thank you MsMaven for making us think.

Wow, wonderful photos and captivating stories! Clothes look so well made and perfectly fitting and everybody looks stylish and elegant. You were very beautiful. It is sad that young people worry so much about “flaws” that do not exist. I love the pink suit you made. I can see it worn today on a runway.

I found some more 50s to post.

In the later 50s we moved from voluptuous movie stars to Audrey Hepburn. Thank goodness. And Jackie Kennedy was on the scene now. Great influence. I loved Audrey's looks because she was skinny. Those 2 piece Jackie outfits would soon be popular everywhere.

Kind of a mix below. I also include some from my Aunt Lizzie's photo album, including some with Uncle Ray.

#1 the sisters again. My Mom made that dress I'm wearing when dropped waists were in style. I don't think my Dad liked it on her so she altered it for me. I didn't love it either, but it was another dress to wear!

#2 Hiking outfits. I see I'm still wearing those Bermudas. If my hair was in a pony tail it was at least 1958.

# 3-4 quilting Big Sis's Hope Chest quilt in the lr. Mom got into quilting and we often had the frames set up in our living room. I didn't like to do it, but did it as my duty! I'll have to find the bridesmaid dresses again. Meantime, she married and in 1959 she had her first baby. This is visiting her. I made the pink suit. Not sure of date, but had to be at least '58 because this was the first time I was allowed to drive the new family Ford. I'd just finished driver training and had license.

#5-6 I think I've posted 5 before. This shows my belly. I was self-conscious about my belly and thunder thighs, a term learned later. See my bulging belly? I later learned that my thighs were bigger because my hips and but were so small and skinny. Later everything adjusted.

Still, such body self-consciousness--and this a while before Twiggy. It seems sad looking back.

#6 was a matching top and pants I made from a cotton print. Don't remember the cardi.

#7-8 What to wear to a shooting party! Dad borrowed his Brother’s 20-20 and we went out into the wilds and took turns at shooting at a bottle. In my senior year a friend invited me to attend a girls's rifle club meeting with her in the basement ROTC rifle range. I had a turn getting on my stomach and shooting. I didn't join the club. Last time I shot a rifle or any weapon.

But look at the great shooting outfits!

9-11 are from my Great Aunt Lizzie and Uncle Ray's photo album. I don't know when these were taken. Early 1900's to 20s?

Look at her jacket. Wouldn't you love to have it now? I'm not sure if they fell in a lake or just went wading. And I don't know what kind of car this is. Reminds me of the movie The Yellow Rolls-Royce. I don't think this was a Rolls.
