Yes, being mindful is exactly the point. I have always used shopping as a tool for procrastination, entertainment and stress relief. And I am not happy with the degree of closet churn I have had going on for years.

My goal is to thin out my closet a bit more this year, and when I do, I’ll put more empty hangers away so I am not tempted to fill them. So along with my shopping limit, I’m also practicing a one-in, at-least-one-out method for certain segments of my wardrobe like tops and jackets (which I have in abundance!). I suspect I may need some new shorts for summer this year.

You have bought some great new pieces. The Preen skirt definitely has the wow factor and the reptile print is something that looked so much nicer on you than in the stock photo. As you were given the teal top, that addition does not count. I like this as a lounge wear piece.

I love the idea of a diagonal hem on the sweater! That would add a lot to it. Love all your new pieces. I the limit to force you to be more mindful of what you are purchasing? I could probably use some of that mindfulness myself...

You are doing well! I think it’s okay to leave room for some impulse buys. Rock on!

I went into this on Sterling’s thread, but I blew past my goal by twice the number I had set... though it was all pretty mindful.

Your turtleneck looks like a good lounge piece.

The turtleneck looks like a totallynormal winter top, as you’ve styled it here. Perfect underlayer for jackets.

The diagonal is an interesting idea, suntiger.

Thanks for the feedback! I ended up with four purchases in January and then these five (plus a freebie) in February, and I did a smallish closet edit recently, but I feel another edit coming on. I am liking the idea of being more mindful about what I am adding.

Love your new additions.

I have similar issues with tunics and loose sweaters.....in saying that I do have a couple because for loungewear or certain times they fill the spot. I would try cutting the bottom, nice with comfy jeans or jogger pants. It could work with black skinnies and boots too for a dressier look.

I'm thinking of keeping the teal top as loungewear -- cutting off the bottom will make it easier to wear. It's really cozy.

Yay for the black top, and aww :)
Don't love the teal, though the color works. Between the neckline, dropped sleeves and boxy shape - pass. Its perfect for someone!
Your other additions are perfect for you

I like the teal tunic on you. I don't exactly understand how you were able to blouse it out to make it work as a sweater, but it seems to work for you. Seeing the sleeve detail on your body is hard with your arms against your body. I would certainly recommend cutting it to see how it works for you

I have a loose goal this year of limiting my clothing/fashion wardrobe purchases to four a month (I'm excluding basics like underwear, gear, and PJ's, and I'm also excluding vacation purchases but trying to keep them within reason).

February was a mostly a success. I ended up with five new purchases, plus an item given to me by a friend (a new with tags item -- more on that later).

My additions were:

- the blue printed Preen skirt
- the star print white blouse
- the AFRM reptile print midi skirt
- the blue camo print cashmere beanie
- a black corset/laceup-side detail shirt
- a teal dolman sleeve turtleneck tunic/dress/top (the gift)

I've already worn the blue skirt, white top, and beanie. Those were all full-price items, and it was pretty much love at first sight with all of them. I expect the reptile print skirt to get lots of wear in the warmer months, but it's also very wearable now with tights and boots. The skirt purchases were within a plan, because I knew I wanted some new skirts that would work for casual summer wear. The white star top is also part of a plan, as I've had a goal of working more light/white into my wardrobe.

The beanie was a moment of weakness, but I really like it and wear it.

The black top was also a moment of weakness, and on sale. I haven't worn it yet, and I think it is actually a final-sale item -- it was part of a sort of clearinghouse sale (a bunch of local boutiques had a big winter clearance event and I do like the top and was happy to spend a little with a small, locally-owned business). In retrospect, I have enough black tops and I really could have left it behind, but the lace-up sides and the encouragement of some enthusiastic SA's and fellow shoppers nudged me into the purchase. I don't think it will become a workhorse, but I do like it and expect to wear it from time to time. It may be a bit trendy, but it's pretty true to my style regardless of trend, as I like a bit of edge added by the corset-ish detail, the shaped but not body con cut, and of course, black.

The teal tunic is from a friend who got it but ended up not liking the color on herself. The pros: it's a great color for me; the turtleneck fits me very nicely and I barely have any turtlenecks anymore; it is ultra soft and comfortable. The cons: it's a tunic, or a dress -- either way, the style is not the best on my shape -- I think this style is better on someone with a straighter or more IT-ish shape. In this photo, I've actually bloused it up to see how it works as a sweater. My friend thought it worked on me either way, but I know that I'm highly unlikely to wear it full-length with leggings -- tunics just are not a great look on me. I'm also not totally sure about the voluminous dolman sleeve. I think the style can work on me, especially if I add a long pendant to create some vertical line to the look. What I'm wondering is whether I should cut it off into a hip-length top. The fabric is a jersey that will be just fine if cut -- it could be hemmed or not. What do you think? Should I wear it as is? Cut it off? Pass it along?
