Thanks ladies.

Mochi, it is fascinating to watch the process of child's learning the new language, but in fact I find everything children do equally so. It is truly amazing to think that someone who was born not that long ago and had only physical needs now has such complex emotional and intellectual life as well. Raising a child, I feel, is like to opportunity to reset myself - as he grows and makes sense of the world with his still unpolluted mind and innocent heart, I go back to certain parts of myself and literally relive my childhood.

Una, I've just had a chance to look at the Battle of the Books link. What a brilliant incentive. I volunteered as a reading mentor with 9-10 year-olds a couple of years ago and I know what a nightmare it is when kids don't want to, or even worse still can't, read that well. I found it so upsetting.
But to have kids dive into books in this way and promote thorough reading in a novel way - I'm all for it. Especially when there are so many other tempting entertainment options.
Congratulations to your boy's team, good luck in the next stage but more importantly - happy reading.

Congratulations to your DS! That is fantastic! My boys have joined Battle of the Books each year, but have not made it past their in-school competitions. But my 7th grade son is going to his school finals for the geography bee! My kids are not particularly athletic, and it is great that schools have more options for kids now - Battle of the Books, Spelling Bees, Geography Bees, Model UN, FBLA, Debate/Forensics, etc. They also have math competitions and current news competitions in the middle school grades, although I don't think those extend beyond the school to district/region/state. I think they had many of those things when I was in school, but they weren't nearly as popular as they seem to be in my kids' school now.

I love this thread and here's my contribution. Well done YLF babies (and Marines too)!

My son, who had only started kindergarden in October, had by Christmas learnt German language so well that we actually ask him (5.5 yo) to translate for us.

After several frustrating weeks at the beginning, this is something that not just makes me feel relieved, but very proud too. Most importantly, life is easier for him now. And, when he starts school in September, he won't feel left behind.

It is a very, very weird feeling to not understand what my own child is saying. It is also frightening as we're nowhere near his level of using the new language and we can't shield him from bad things others may say around or to him. So, we must step on it more.

We can't assess how good he is, but form just listening to him and hearing that his sentences simply flow, with no pausing, there's no thinking about words, to us at least he sounds so confident and comfortable. Yes, we've heard it's easy for kids to pick up new languages and yes, he was already bilingual which apparently helps as he's already familiar with the concept of different language, but even our new friends here are shocked by the speed at which he had progressed.

Thanks for listening and thanks for the opportunity to brag. Leaving the spotlight for another proud mum now

My son begs to watch the Regular Show!

Battle of the Books is something relatively new where kids who want to do it are assigned 13 books or so by grade. They have to read all the books, and then they form teams of 3 and have to answer questions about details in the books. Like, "In which book did a character scoop icy water from a stream?" They have 30 seconds to write the answer, give it to the judge, and then state out loud the full title and author. It was pretty tricky and some of the books were quite hard for 3rd grade. The champs in the school go on to district, then state, then nationals. I was so proud of DS for reading all the books, and he has a phenomenal memory for fiddling details.

Here's a link if you want to know more:

I would have been totally into this in grade school!

Yeah, I want to know more about the Battle of the Books! Please explain. In the meantime, kudos, congrats and yay! Also to MaryK, RoseandJoan, and anyone else I missed or upcoming brags as well.

My kid is awesome too....(and remember, she's 24 so has had a lot of extra time to accumulate bragworthiness). Storyboard artist at Pixar...worked at Cartoon Network where her team was nominated for a short animation Emmy! Unfortunately I can't find the episode free anywhere; I think you have to buy it on iTunes or something. But here's a clip from the episode "Mordecai and the Rigbys (The Regular Show):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8LRzW0B7IQ

Sorry to hijack the bragging. I think all the kids here have such cool moms, there's no way they can end up anything but fabulous!
