I was kind of afraid to check out the rear view in the mirror!

Pocket placement isn't hugely important to me, although I do check it out. Like Maya, I'm mainly bothered by pockets that sit too down. I tried on a pair of True Religion jeans and the pockets were ridiculous on me!

I also don't pay much attention to pocket placement. The only thing I try to avoid are pockets that sit too low. This is what happened with my Matchstick jeans. They were entirely in the wrong spot, making my legs look short and my butt look saggy (which is quite an accomplishment considering how long my legs are and how high my bum is).

Also, what she said about the rise is so true. Some people can wear a low rise and can bend over and be fine. Others can lean over slightly in a mid rise and be exposed to the world. I am in the latter cateogory and it is sooo frustrating.

This was very interesting! Thanks Cathy. And great effort too.

So how much of a difference do the shape of pockets "really" make when most of your tops cover them up. Women hardly tuck tops into jeans anymore. I vote concentrate on the thigh and crotch area and leave the pockets as a less important part of the fitting art. When you fit as many women into jeans as I do - and jeans are hard to fit - you become less concerned with pocket placement actually. Does that make sense?

The author thinks that skinnies looked good on most people if worn with a "super long shirt." I agree that the shirt has the be the right length and type to make it work. Yes, it's really worth it

re: the skinnies- also note that the gal in modeling the skinnies was not wearing anything near a "hip and modern" top. It was not a flattering silhouette that way and resembled "mom wear"

I knew that long butt existed. I had a dear friend recently wear some jeans that gave her the dreaded long butt but I don't want to say anything. Maybe I can send her this article. I am all too aware of the dreaded long butt with myself. I just love that someone has finally given some real thought to the long butt phenomenon and how to avoid it.

Pretty funny, as well as a good lesson on why those rear pockets matter! I appreciate their photographic evidence.

I went looking for the accompanying posting about Avoiding Mom-butt for Moms over 50 and that was compelling as well -- especially how excited her mom got:

http://www.graspingforobjectiv.....g-mom.html

As for skinnies, I wonder if her resistance has tempered since that was more than a year ago. . . ?

Cathy, this is not only informative but hilarious! I was cracking up over their *scientific* experiment and all I could think of was that SNL Mom Jeans skit! Oh, and the grandma jeans - those are what my mom wears! Not quite fab, but at age 79, I guess she can pretty much do whatever she wants. Thanks for sharing!

I think they are right..pocket placement and well-fitting jeans are important to creating a flattering backside. I'm not sure how I feel about their statement that jeans require some appropriate fading. While I'm not opposed to some fading the fading they visualized was atrocious.
