My neighbour, who is maybe 45-50 with a nice average weight type figure (curvy from waist to hip in her case), was wearing mom jeans yesterday. I think they do emphasize the curve from waist to hip but I don't feel that's necessarily a bad thing. Because she's not a hipster and the jeans were clearly unintentional, they do look dated, but not "unflattering" per se. No more so than skinnies on those of us with bigger hips and thighs, something the eye definitely had to adjust to after boot cuts.

Suz have you tried one yet?

I too have a long torso. I tried a pair and am on the fence. It takes some eye adjustment, even if it does make the torso look shorter.

Yes I saw a young, beautiful, slim, trendy woman recently in very high waisted skinnies with little oxfords and she looked amazing. Hers were dark wash. I'm not sure I'll ever admire acid wash.
I also like high waisted drapey dress pants and low rise jeans do me no favours. My butt is what it is for my age and I'm past trying to make it look 15 years old.

My mom will be happy since she never stopped wearing high-waisted jeans (and she looks FABULOUS, she actually dresses young and fun with colorful and patterned blousons and scarves). But she has an apple-shaped body and low-waisted jeans don't do her any favour: she always complains how uncomfortable low-rise is on her. She never tucks and wears rather long tops (since she has a short torso and very long legs) so there is no long butt showing. I say 'whatever floats your boat and looks and feels best on you' here. And I actually think low-rise jeans are not meant for those with a muffin top, old or young, since a belly hanging over your pants is not my idea of a perfect fit.
I must be peculiar. My eye could easily adjust to high waisted trousers. Admittedly, probably not the ones pictured. And yes...I do fear the long butt thing...but as someone with a long torso, I like the high waist, even if my waist is short (which it is) for the leg-lengthening possibilities.

The high waist doesn't bug me at all (unless they start forcing me to wear very high waists and they are pinchy tight). What I think makes them extremely unflattering is the width of the thigh and knee. They are wide all the way down to the widest part of the calves and then taper straight down into the ankle. I dislike the way they make legs look like tubes. Little wide ice cream cones. *shudder*

Gaylene, you are right. At the college where I teach many young girls have them, and I hallucinate because I am transported back in my own teenage years looking at them. True, with no hips it does look different, but there are also many girls with fuller figures proudly donning the style, especially in baby-blue thin and moulding denim. And I admit, as impossible as it sounds, it does flatter them, in a strange, antipodal way.

This said, the powder-blue denim ones are VERY hard to pull off even among young girls, and most of them are a miss to my eye.

Well, given the universal ugh from YLFers, I'm thinking younger set will be all over this look BECAUSE the jeans are getting the thumbs down from the likes of our crowd. Before dismissing the trend, check the pictures of models wearing those TopShop jeans. The look of high-waisted jeans on an ultra slim body with no hips is radically different than the look on the curvaceous Ms Monroe and, I'm thinking, most mom bodies.

My only fear is if our eye starts to become re-accustomed to high-waisted jeans. Will the look then start trickling down to actual moms? Many people had a poisoned eye for low-rise skinnies when they first hit the market, yet most of us now consider them a "classic" silhouette. Same for ultra baggy, slouchy boyfriends. Maybe if enough of us started wearing mom jeans, or at least signaled our approval of them when shopping with our daughters, we'd scare off the trendsters before those jeans gain a foothold? Just a thought.
They're back!!! LOL

Yes, got a Santana stretch pair of black jeans at Costco last week - am still debating if I should K or R - and was surprised at how hight the waist was. I think the trend may be going in this direction. Or trying to, anyway. But I admit, with ankle length, not full length, it looks better. You absolutely have to roll them à la Marilyn, and get them even shorter than what she is showing. Oh, yes, and tuck too.
I saw someone wearing a pair of these yesterday. Not sure that it was intentional but I had to do a double take and it was a very young woman (under 20). She had her tshirt tucked in. A definate throwback. I agree with Janet - not a great look which is why I was so surprised at the age of the young woman. And Textsyle - totally agree on uncovering a few of these for $2 or so.
