This is one of the best YLF stories ever! I'm so glad you had fun with your daughter and her friends Candace. I bet your daughter was so happy to see you and was in awe of your outfit choice!
Those shoes are so cute. Were they comfy?
I love the whole outfit. It was perfect for a tea and especially for someone who doesn't want to dress over the top.

My outfit was perfect! Thanks for all the advice. I got so many compliments on the skirt from Anthropologie and the yellow Born shoes. The security screener at the airport even commented on my outfit! My outfits are not usually that memorable so it was all fun....And best of all I had a great weekend spending time with my daughter and her new friends.

thanks....I am so excited to see my daughter.....I have so much trouble putting together outfits. When my daughter is home I run my choices by her and the face says it all.

Dani, I never would of thought of a turquoise purse. I don't own many purses. I have the usual brown and black hobo bags. I need to branch out.

It's a lovely outfit! I love Anthropologie and those shoes will bring some fun Florida sun to the outfit. I don't recall having any mother-daughter teas at my sorority for some reason, but I'm sure you would have fit right in!

Candace, I think the outfit you have put together is very nice. The yellow shoes will stand out well on their own or you could add a yellow purse or a necklace with some yellow in it as well. Angie's rule of thumb is no more than 2 items of the same color in an outfit (as Kari mentioned). I don't think you have to add anything else yellow at all. For a purse, turquoise would be fun or even red or pink. I think black might be a little too harsh but you could definitely take a look when you get all the pieces and finally get to try your outfit on. Let us know what you decide!

thanks Kari, actually my top is white. I am still waiting for my shoes. I hope they come today. I can't wait to try on the whole outfit. I bought a yellow purse on Saturday, but I am not sure I love it. I will wait to see if it matches. I might me better off with the yellow sweater if it matches. But then what color purse would be okay. Black? thanks for all the help........

Candace, what cute pieces! I LOVE those shoes and think they will look awesome with the navy top and pale blue skirt.

I can't find a reference, but I think I recall Angie saying that for bright accent colors, her general rule of thumb is to have no more than two items of the same color in the same outfit to avoid looking too matchy-matchy. (Am I remembering correctly?)

My sense is that you will probably be okay if you don't add a second piece of yellow because the shoes will be eye-catching enough on their own, but I'd like to hear what the experts suggest.

thanks so much, Inge, I am barely computer literate. I have a yellow crop sweater but I will have to wait for the shoes to arrive before I decide if it looks right. I am not a big yellow person but these shoes looked so cute. They were sold out online but I was able to call my local Nordstrom and they were able to find my size. So for the future that's good to know that stores have access to more inventory then the regular online shopper.

I hope you don't mind that I'm copying the links to your skirt and blouse below (I hope I have the right items?). I think it will be helpful to get more responses to your new question. Or you could start a new thread for this, that might increase traffic too.

They are "Born Hibiscus" in yellow. They look so cute I can't wait to get them. Do I need another item in yellow if my outfit is white and blue? thanks...sorry I can't post website links..

Candace, I bought this dress to wear for a wedding, but it is cotton, and I have also worn it to church.
http://i297.photobucket.com/al.....sd3015.jpg

Sometimes I wear it with a cardi like this http://i297.photobucket.com/al.....sd3016.jpg

I am not really onto what to wear for this specific occasion, as we don't have them in Australia, but I'd certainly wear it to an afternoon tea event.

I get compliments every time I wear this, and it is an example of a fit and flare dress that is good for those who are smaller on top. And because it is a dress, it can be a little longer and cover the knees!

Candace, if you're still hoping to find a dress rather than separates, you might try Nordstrom's dress shop section on their website. You can search for dresses recommended for your body type.

One of my pear-shaped friends often wears dresses in this kind of silhouette and looks amazing. I'm not sure if either are something you'd want to wear at a formal tea, but maybe the silhouette will help?

Sorry for all the posts!

What about the embroidered cardigan from Talbots (white) with a black skirt and silver jewelry? I think it could give someone a polished and classy look. You could wear the cardigan with jeans later and the black skirt with a tank and denim jacket.

Candace,

Your style is a reflection of your personality. If the Talbots skirt feels like you, it certainly works. The skirt is meant to be worn below the knee. Because of your height you may feel more comfortable wearing a slim or A-line skirt that hits at or below your knee.

I would recommend too that whatever you purchase for the sorority tea, you've got to love it, feel like a million bucks wearing it, and will want to wear it again and again.

Hi Candace,
I've been reading YLF for about 2 years or so. I'm 53, 5'4", size 8 on top and a 6 on the bottom. After reading your post I felt compelled to respond, eventhough i have never done so before. Because of my small frame, age and personal preference I dress very tailored. I stay away from large prints, frilly, and flowery patterns. I like classic clothing in good quality natural fabrics. I too, like you am not a pastely person. I prefer crisp white cotton blouses with a neutral pant and cardigan. Keeping my hair short, and highlighted, I feel very polished, not at all dowdy.

In the past I have attended high school sorority events with my daughters. By all means if you feel comfortable in a flower print dress or skirt go for it. I have worn white capri length pants with a sweater set and a simple flat, feminine sandal. A colorful, (not loud, or beach wear) skirt works well too. Lily Pulitzer is a look you may see at a sorority tea. A simple tailored linen dress would work as well which can be topped with a cardigan.

Lately I have been thinking about what to wear to my son's May graduation from an Ivy League school. For me the look will be uncomplicated, simple yet sophisticated. Possibly a small black and white geometric print A-line shirt with a white tank and finely knit black cardigan, I shop at Talbots (be careful not to look matronly), and Norstrom. Be true to yourself. Good luck!
