I love what Suz & Angie wrote.

I have a slightly idiosyncratic thought about "modern", I'm not sure where it leads but, I don't see a head to toe look as modern. It has to be mixed up by the individual before it strikes me as a modern look.

Yeah, when I say it's modern I feel it is fresh somehow and a new take on something (proportion, pairing, colour). Current is more, well current.
Suz and Angie already said it better

What Suz said. God job

Modern is a lot more current than current. Modern is more trendy, directional and fashion forward. Current is fashionably in style.

I'm still mulling over this but my initial thought is that "modern" is an over-arching descriptor that encompasses fabrications and construction whereas current is how the modern aesthetic is expressed at this point in time.
For example, denim jeans used to be strictly work wear but it is modern to wear them in casual or even dressy situations. Currency is how that denim is styled right here and now.

Suz gave such a complete reply. I was just thinking that 60's boho is very current where I live right now but it isn't modern.

Good question, Deborah! I think right now, there might not be a huge distinction because we seem to be in a (for want of a better term) "modernist" fashion phase -- with the emphasis on minimalism and clean lines (on the whole).

Fashion's always hearkening back to earlier times as well, so there are always retro elements. But sometimes more than others, it seems to me.

Ultimately, I think modern and current can be distinguished, at least in part. For example -- a full skirt is current, but perhaps not super-modern. Of course, the one you buy in the store today is going to be much more modern-looking than the one you inherited from your mother or grandmother. But the style itself seems to have an inherent nostalgic element to it.

HOW you wear it can be perfectly modern, however -- as in Angie's recent outfit where she paired it with the slouchier sweater, something that would not have been done in her mother's day.

The other day our lovely Fruitful asked the question how important it was to each of us to be current (when I find the link I will pop it in for those who may have missed it). After I posted my response I found myself thinking on it further and came to the conclusion that I like to look 'modern' but wondered style wise is 'modern' the same thing as 'current'. Im not sure it is. I wondered what you all think. And how you might define the two.

xxx Deborah
