Sorry to be such a downer on the shoulder fit! I think that over time it would start to bother you more and more. I think it is wise to return it.

A couple of years ago, I bought a really cute striped top that was a tad too big in the shoulders. It was made from rayon, and I thought I could shrink it by washing on hot. Well, it didn't shrink (go figure...). After only one season, I couldn't stand wearing it anymore. I hated the extra fabric in the armpits and how it pulled on my shoulders when I would move around, and I was always readjusting the top in the shoulder area. I promised myself I wouldn't buy anything too big in the shoulders again. And now I get to harp on shoulder fit on others. :)

I hope that you can find another top that is similar. It was a very cute top!

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I like them because I don't have to fuss with keeping them folded over - turtlenecks don't lay nicely for me, and any kind of fussiness in clothing where things have to lay just so never seems to work for me.

Despite the lack of success on these items (though I can hope to find the AT sweater eventually), I do have a couple of long sleeved mock necks that do work for me. I am also interested in this navy top from Everlane.

I like the mock necks better than the roll neck ones - I like the simplicity and modern twist on (what I consider) a preppy top; the mock is less fussy.

I think they are one of those things that really suit some people - like Janet I will be avoiding them - but I do like them on others. I am hoping to find ribbed fitted tops with a shallow scoop or boat neck for winter- long sleeved. I do occasionally wear a turtle neck and with long sleeves they suit me better than short.

Citygirl- striped is from Banana Republic, the plaid from Ann Taylor.

Gigi, you’re right. I was hoping to ignore this problem but you’re right. I need things to be perfect (see my explanation above in the comments about my shopping this year). Back it goes. I could see how the neck might stretch out. That’s a better argument for the AT one, which is a substantial fabric. I’ll see if the store had the next size when I return.

These are cute tops. I'm personally not a fan of mock necks, but they're very popular. I feel like the neck gets stretched out and misshapen after a few washes. Maybe I've had inferior quality mock necks. :)

I would try a size up on the plaid one to see if that fits any better. On the striped one, it looks to me like the shoulders are too wide, creating a bit of excess fabric in the armpit area. I have that problem too and am very sensitive to it. Too bad the top doesn't come in petite.

I love mock necks and turtlenecks both, and wear them all winter. I like both of these on you very much. I can see why the black & white stripe is an essential. Very cute. I do love the plaid and think it looks great on you. If you're uncertain, try on a size up before you make a final decision.

Jenn, I was wondering if anyone would notice - I didn’t ask about it because I didn’t want to poison the well, so to speak. That area of the shirt moves around a bit. I think it’s because my shoulders are relatively slight, but if I sized down, the rest would be too clingy. I am used to this problem, to a degree, of course. The arm openings themselves feel fine, so I think it’s more a question of not filling out the shoulders so much.

Interesting range of opinions!

Janet - yeah, photo fail on my part. My neck is short so they do cover a lot of it. I’ll see if I can get my husband to take a pic.

Sal - this is my fear, especially for the sweater. The tee shirt is thinner and I think will work under a chuncky cardigan or blazer.

Jules and Karen - I can try a size up but may just return for now. I’m trying to keep to a buying quota per month and I’m over. I can return this one and see about the bigger size next month, but I have a list of other stuff I want so it has to compete for a place! It’s making me scrutinize every purchase for sure, and I need the discipline-my wardrobe is larger than I want t to be now that I’ve defined my style. A larger size would be in the running if it looks good, though.

I will say no to mock necks. My neck is one of those parts that is definitely giving away my age these days, and I look better in styles that either cover it completely (a full turtleneck) or draw the eye away (V necks).

That’s ok, another trend I can pass by this year! LOL

A mock neck is like a half-height turtleneck - it gives a bit of the look without the folded over fabric. I really like mock necks but don't have many. I love the plaid and agree with Jules - can you easily try a size up? Stripe is also very cute. I may have to check those out next time I'm near a B&M AT.

Anyone else notice that mock necks are everywhere this season? I have some in a full sleeve sweater version, but this half sleeve kind appealed to me in a sort of retro way.

- BR - this black and white one is a ribbed tee. It’s a nice essentia and I can pair with lots of stuff. Thumbs up, unless you all can detect a problem. ETA - there is a fit issue with the shoulders. People pointed it out below; I had noticed and wanted to see if it was just me. I will pass on this after all - I need things to be perfect nowadays.

- AT - this one is a sweater. It’s very warm despite the sleeve length. I love this plaid. But I see now that it’s not forgiving with skinny jeans. In fact, the black jeans need to go, because they’re faded and I’ve since found I like AT skinny jeans better (these are Wit &Wisdom). I tried again with the more AT jeans. These give me less muffin top, but I came to the same conclusion about how flattering this is. ETA - May try a size up but it’s not currently available online or in my local store. I’ll see if it pops back up.

Anyone else attracted to this look? Thoughts on these items?
