I *love* MM. LaFleur - I have several pieces and am absolutely addicted to their newsletter, which features vignettes of awesome women. The clothes are pricey, but I've found that I wear them often!

MM LaFleur needs to send a bento box to Angie so that we can see her model the looks! :-D

Just for fun, because I had no idea what a Bento Box was (unless its for Japanese food) and had never heard of this company , I did the survey. First of all , I got stopped at the first question asking which one of the outfits you'd "rock". None - lol. Well, I picked one anyways and moved along. The interesting thing was that there were no colour preferences to pick from, or anything asking what you actually looked like - hair colour, skin tones etc. Good thing they don't ship to Canada, as Suz said, or I'd have probably done it out of curiosity !

Unfrumped, yes if you go to their web site you can click on "Shop." You don't have to sign up for the Bento box - you can just order whatever you like, but it seems that a lot is sold out in various sizes. Some of the dresses sent to me aren't showing up now, but I found the links doing a google search.

I went with the Bento box as an experiment and I am glad I did -- I did more online research and some of their clothes are cut for pears vs inverted triangles vs apples etc. So filling out the survey did seem to direct them in what they selected for me. Mind you, I filled it out and ordered online on my cell phone, while killing time in the airport. It's odd -- I never even said anything about loving & living in dresses -- which is what I have been doing for months. It's like they read my mind. :-)

You have 4 days to return and they give you a mailing label so all you have to do is drop it at UPS.

Seems very promising!
I would love this--personal shopper in a box. I always worry that they can't possibly fit me just based on "true sizing" and descriptors.
Are returns free? And did you have a catalog to review to see if items generally looked interesting? Or do they pull from a variety of sources?

Thank you for your thorough review. I am impressed with their simple yet skillfully designed pieces. And they are made in NYC, where they can keep an eye on quality. I've seen other concepts like this (Stitch Fix for example) but was underwhelmed with the merchandise. It's sounding like they all work on you, and we look forward to seeing you model them if you want a final YLF blessing.

Laura, some of the items sent were 200+ range but they have items in lower range. I think because i checked off the box saying money wasn't an issue, they sent me more higher range items.

I'll have to check out your recent post ..

Interesting you see this as business formal. Yes, I need that, but I also need smart casual. And to my eye I can see how I can easily pop more casual shoes & topper on to a dress like this, and now I have smart casual. A denim jacket over a simple dress like this seems easier to me than buying jeans that fit just right... especially since it takes only a 2 lb weight gain or loss for me to be buying a different size jean. Frustrating! Which is why I like dresses so much more. Except more casual dresses tend to just not wear well over time. Pills and general rattiness in no time, especially if cramming into luggage.

Totally going to check out Elizabeth & Clarke -- thanks for the tip!

I'm curious, what's the price range on these items? It's gotta be $200+ an item, surely? I wonder how they'd compare, price and quality wise, to that custom suit maker in St. Louis that I posted about recently.

I suspect I first heard about MM Lafleur at Corporette; they seem to be one of the few places still talking about business formal dress requirements anymore.

BTW, another good company in the 'a box of clothes gets sent to me' space is Elizabeth & Clarke. They do tops only, new shipment every season (winter, spring, summer, fall). You choose the three tops you want to try from their selection a few months ahead so they know what their run will be and can do a lot higher quality for the price than at retail. It's a variety of formality, some wovens some knits, and I'm pretty sure they manufacture in nyc.

Thanks Thin White Duchess -- at this price point, it better wear well. As my weight has crept up, I've been happy with LOFT and AT and ON -- not wanting to spend a lot. But disappointed in how it's worn over time. I just don't have the time right now to shop constantly and replace. I need items to last longer than that.

Not just laundering -- but also fit. I'm excited about the stretchability factor for the fabrics. It's like my favorite RL jersey dresses, which aren't just comfortable, but stretch (and bounce back) to accommodate weight fluctuations.

I love my RL jersey dresses because they are double lined thick jersey that wears exceptionally well AND adds structure YET is stretchy and comfy -- but the downside with them is that they are heavy for travel. One dress is fine; a recent trip I packed three of them and it made my bag heavy!

These LaFleur dresses are ultra light. PLUS! They aren't lined though. I think with a slip under them, and a topper, they'll work for 3 seasons. Not sure about dead of winter. But three seasons is good.

I just wish they'd sent me some separates so I could gauge fit on those. I'm really intrigued now about their skirts.

I've heard about them in a couple of places. I was also not impressed with stitch fix. The pieces you show here look a lot mor upscale and more 'you.' I did some bricks and mortar shopping today in Georgetown in some nice high end stores. I didn't buy anything because it was 95 degrees out and I didn't want to deal with tryouts, but these pieces look on trend with all the nice stuff I saw today. ( FWIW BCBG was the favorite.) looking forward to your photos.

I have two dresses and a cardi from them and am very happy with everything. I would absolutely order again. I like that they really "get" the conservative, east coast business look. No unexpected open backs, no skinny straps, no short skirts... Everything is perfect for conservative business but can be accessorized and layered to dress down. Hm, I'm sounding like a spokesman. In short, I vote keep it all. The fabrics hold up well between cleanings, they will pack well for all your travels, and you won't have to think about what to wear!

YES, Suz! Vivienne Files!!

I'm also loving Une Femme lately -- she speaks to me for the side of my life that needs to be more casual, yet still sharp and put together, while also being petite, more mature figure over age 50, and practical for grab & go traveling.

Since taking this job with lots of travel, I've really come to appreciate essential pieces like these dresses -- which while simple aren't plain either -- that you can then just accessorize to change up the look. Fits easily in a suitcase. Reduces stress! Allows one to focus on acquiring accessories and shoes instead... OMG... I need to update/ refresh my shoes too... !

Laurie, I'm in high-tech marketing. I am up to 60% travel these days. Typical week is a 2-3 day trip flying somewhere on the east coast (lately lots of NYC trips) and sometimes CA; the rest of the days WFH. WFH days I often go out with hubby in downtown Boston, as we have a social life (receptions, theater, museums, dining out, plenty of occasions for semi-formal wear, etc).

Business trips can be for customer meetings, or internal planning/team meetings. I interface a lot with sales people who may be all suited up, or wearing smart casual, depending on situation. Internal meetings can be here in Boston area (run the gamut from typical Boston conservative to more casual software developer style), or down South at HQ (brighter colors, more statement jewelry... women do smart casual but also do lots of dresses). Add on to that the complication that we often have off-site planning meetings in resort areas (next one is Bar Harbor), where the expectation is a bit more casual, but yeah.... still professional. GAH! Can we say "it's complicated"? (The recent Talbot's haul was totally with the Bar Harbor trip in mind!)

I'm mid-level management angling for a promotion. My team has started calling me the Chief Marketing Architect, so I'm hoping I could create myself a role like that, if not at current company then elsewhere. (I've set myself a deadline -- if I don't get it where I'm at by X date, I'm moving on). I interface a lot with senior management internally, but also externally too. If I get this promotion then I will be interfacing much more frequently with C-level types on a more regular basis, especially externally. So I know it's not a good idea to buy clothes for the "fantasy life" but ... I am banking on the idea that it's not such a fantasy and may indeed be right around the corner.

Add on top of all of that.... I've got a guest lecture gig at a local B school this fall, and have been invited for another one at a different B school, but not sure I can swing that second one with the travel schedule right now. That's the longer term plan: eventually (not yet) I envision maybe semi-retiring and teaching. Maybe. We'll see how it goes this Fall! If not teaching, I eventually see a second career consulting for sure.

Can you remind me/us of your job and work needs style wise? I travel quite a lot also, always looking for kindred spirits!

I've seen this company/idea mentioned on blogs but don't need this kind of business formal wear myself. I'm really glad to read your review and that your first impressions are so good. I look forward to seeing fit pics.

I promise I will post pics -- nobody's home to take them right now.

Last week I saw an ad in my Facebook feed for this NYC company:
https://mmlafleur.com/survey/

I had just been freshly returned from one of my many NYC business trips of late, and feeling desperately in need of a style refresh that befits that city, which I'm practically commuting to and fro lately. Harried, tired, feeling ratty, and with so little time to B&M shop these days, I clicked through to their site and looked at their clothing and got intrigued enough to order a Bento Box -- with Angie's insistence that yes I can wear regulars not just petites echoing in my head. I figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

I can't remember everything I selected on the survey, but I do remember saying I didn't mind spending $, that I had an apple belly, that I am currently edging into a size 6p at Ann Taylor, or a 4 regular. That I didn't mind *minor* alterations but would not make major ones. And I fudged my title a bit -- putting down my aspirational one (I'm up for a promotion.. so cross fingers). And said that I travel a lot -- so mix & match & travel friendly and also *comfortable* were very important to me.

I got my box today. Beautifully packaged, with easy return label and a feedback card with prices and information.

It also comes with a book, which I suppose is the only accessory you get with your first order. The marketing person in me says "smart!" It costs $26 and is shrink-wrapped, with a sticker saying to read the introduction online here http://mmlafleur.com/shop/wear-to-work... before opening the shrink wrap (which means you've bought the book). I really don't need anymore books as we've been madly decluttering, but I think I may bite and check it out.

It was only after I placed my order that I saw on the site that they are getting petites this Fall. I didn't know if I'd get petites or regulars. Everything I rec'd was regular.

I received 3 dresses and a sweater. All the dresses were size 4 regular.

Pic 1: The Morandi Sweater in Oatmeal in XS/S
http://mmlafleur.com/shop/morandi-oatmeal
This is the first thing I tried on, and I had to laugh, because over my shorts and tank top it looked like the Big Lebowski's bath robe. And well... oatmeal? Not my best color. It seemed too big, and ugh... a belt? I don't do belts all that well. I set it aside....

Pic 2: The Narie in Kalamata
http://mmlafleur.com/shop/narie-kalamata
The kalamata is a rich burgundy, which I love. I zipped this up and wow... just wow... it's got stretch and it's comfortable and it looks like I magically dropped 10 pounds! What's more the length is just right. Right at my knee. The only nit is that it kind of sticks out a bit in the back at the zipper -- I think because my shoulders are actually not wide enough for it (imagine that). I suspect this is a super easy easy tailoring fix though -- just needs to be taken in at the zipper, or a couple of darts added at the back neckline.

Then I tried the sweater over it and... magically... I actually liked it together!!! Yes even belted. Especially with sleeves pushed up, and left open just a bit in the front. With a gold chunky bracelet. And nude pumps. Or even my SW Chanel-like ballet flats, because it looks just fine with flats too. Or with chestnut boots, or heck, the new snake skin boots.....

Pic 3: the Sarah 4.0 in Peacock
http://mmlafleur.com/shop/sarah-4-0-peacock
I loved the rich color but was dubious about the sleeves, thinking it'd make me look like a line backer. But no. It does not. I do already have an ink AT sheath, but this one ... I like the fuller coverage neckline. I like that it is simple but not plain. I also like the longer length -- right at the knee. No alterations required for this one. Again, super stretchy, comfortable, can sit and bend and walk etc... and makes me look like I dropped 10 lbs! I don't know where my belly went. It's all sucked in, without feeling like a girdle. And yes that Big Lebowski sweater works over this one too. I also tried it with my new Talbot's navy suit jacket. It's not an exact match, but so close enough, I think it works.

Pic 4: the Emily in Black
http://mmlafleur.com/shop/emily-black
All of the above.... stretchy, comfortable, fits well.. elbow sleeves, yeah!!!.. This one has a slight A-line to it, and slit pockets. I'm on the fence about the pockets. I think they are cute, and who doesn't need pockets?? Can tuck a cell phone in. Can pin my badge to the pocket. The pockets are low, more at the hips, so they aren't adding to my belly. They do poof a bit, but I don't know if they poof to "deal breaker" levels.

I'm really tempted to keep them all. And order more Bento boxes. I love this concept, and I love the idea of building a professional wardrobe of simple easy travel friendly pieces that look polished and are easy to accessorize.

Overall: these items remind me a lot of Theory, which I've long loved, but which doesn't always love me back, because of fit issues. These fit a lot better than Theory on me.

I will post pics of me wearing so I can get the YLF critical review before I have to ship any returns back -- but in the meantime -- what's your gut reaction? Especially knowing me and my lifestyle and work needs?
