It's interesting reading everyone's responses!

I seem to have a double standard regarding mixing metals. My watchband is inherently mixed, as it has both gold and silver. My wedding ring is platinum (looks silver); on my right hand I wear my grandmother's gold wedding band. So I have no problem mixing metals in my watch and rings.

However, my necklaces and earrings must be the same metal--most often silver--and I'm scrupulous about buying boots and bags with silver trim only.

I even mix metals with rings. I wear a couple of my late mom's platinum bands with a gold ring with diamonds. Mixing ring/watch metals does not bother me but mixing metals on bag and belt hardware does look wrong to me. We all have our little quirks.

I mostly don't mix metals, primarily because I have much more silver than gold jewelry. (I greatly prefer silver /pewter/ gunmetal hardware on bags and shoes.) My wedding band is platinum and diamonds and to me it 'goes' with anything. I used to wear a lot of Yurman and Hardy pieces that were both silver and gold and always enjoyed the combination, though I still preferred silver with certain colors.

I don't wear a lot of jewelry at once- generally a necklace OR earrings (never earrings if wearing my glasses), wedding band plus 1 ring on my right hand. And sometimes a watch OR bracelet, occasionally a few bracelets together. Not a lot of mixing but I'm not opposed to it at all, just depends what looks good together and with the outfit.

I think 'rules' about mixing metals went the way of 'no white after Labor Day!' And if not, I have no problem breaking those kinds of rules!

For me, my rings don't count....they are on all the time, and I don't really think of them as interchangeable. So that means yellow gold.

However, I have a new challenge with eyewear. I'm now wearing glasses all the time (sigh....) and the one I chose have silver accents. So now if I'm wearing "no jewelry" by definition I have gold and silver.

So maybe I should start mixing and matching my jewelry too?

JAileen, that is amazing! My senior year I met an old Ag who lived in a house just south of campus. He was class of 40-something and his ring was completely smooth, too. That's kind of what I aspire to - though it would simultaneously be sad to completely lose all the detail.

I don't have a wedding ring, but I do wear my Aggie ring. I've worn it daily (with the exception of historical/costume events where it would be anachronistic) for thirteen years. It's gold with antiquing.

Like Echo, I feel it's an extension of myself. It's slowly and steadily losing detail in the relief as I wear it; I have no plans to stop wearing it. As a lefty, I wear watches on my right wrist, and today's is silver-toned with blue MOP face. Very much mixing metals, and I don't care, because the ring is special enough.

GF.... Thanks for asking what I've been meaning to for ever...

I've a yellow gold engagement ring, one more yellow gold for right hand, one white gold for same and one platinum band for left.
My preferred watch is dual tone. But I do have other silver face watches and I sometimes wear a gold bangle in right.
My colouring is yellow toned so I wear yellow gold better. I hate rose gold.
Q1: can I wear white gold ring with yellow bangle in the same hand?
Guess the answer is no.
Q2: what about diamonds... Count the color of stones(white) or setting(yellow)?

I don't wear the engagement and white gold ring in winter of they have diamonds and I always end up getting my woollens entangled.... I'm that clumsy.
So

I have only one wedding ring and one husband. I rarely take off my ring. I wore a mixed metal Seiko watch for years. I recently bought a giant silver Timex watch that doesn't match my ring. Usually I'm very matchy matchy, but this doesn't bother me at all.

I mix metals with abandon, always have. Mostly gold/silver/ platinum/stainless steel/vintage rhodium; and I prize individual pieces that mix metals. Which amulet (necklace) I wear generally depends upon my clothing. But come to think of it, when I wear copper, base metal, or anodized silver, I do strip off my usual bangle, chain bracelet, and watch. Maybe what I don't do is mix is shiny/distressed (like Echo, my engagement and anniversary rings very seldom leave my hands)

I mix shiny silver and shiny gold all the time. If I didn't, the metal on my footwear and bags would drive me nuts trying to get them all to match. Plus, I would need another wedding ring. I wear my gold band all the time, and a couple (but not all) of my watches have both silver and gold.

BUT! I think rose gold would clash with gold and not look good with my skin so I don't wear it at all. I wear a little antiqued silver and pewter but not brass and rarely brushed silver or brushed gold. So yes, there are limits to my mixing!

I generally don't study other women closely enough (don't wanna be a creeper!) to notice if they are mixing metals and to what degree: Shoes, bag, wrist, fingers, neck, ears, places where a brooch might be hiding. . .

I've always viewed my wedding set at an extension of me. It doesn't have to "match" anything; it just IS. So it has never occurred to me that I needed to match the metals if I wear a bracelet or a watch. However, while I do have a few platinum pieces, I primarily wear yellow gold simply because it is more flattering to my skin tone.

I've always mixed metals with intention. And I didn't have many gold pieces when I was younger! My jewelry represents my journey and life, a personal collection with personal meaning. Never one for matching or 'sets', I simply wear what I feel like. It's a different mix all the time, and I promise all the metals and stones get along My nails are always a polished nude because colored polish added to the mix would draw my attention too much and THAT would bother me.

Although it looks fine to my eye on others, especially when it looks deliberate (e.g., a mix of multiple silver and gold pieces), I prefer the look of silver with my skin tone, so my jewelry collection is silver / rhodium / white gold / gunmetal.

Oh, timely post for me because I'm thinking about this more because I'm about to tackle " tidying" my jewelry and am thinking about what I want to keep and wear, and why.
I do mix, because my wedding and am engagement rings are gold, but for other jewelry I've gravitated to mostly silver( with emphasis on muted silver, pewter tones).

I don't wear bracelets/ bangles much if ever, and I feel necklaces are " farther away" so they are less of an issue even I i were in matchy mode, and don't clash much, but I do always wear a watch on left. Even before I switched to silver jewelry, my favorite watch had been mixed gold and silver metal and black. I have acquired some mixed metal costume jewelry I love, too. So I think I have a sugar eye for that. It might be subliminally because of the better blend with my gold rings, or just because I have cool to neutral coloring and don't choose a lot very shiny silver.
So I think of keeping an eye out for just the right mixed metal look as a kind of signature style, and also maybe one way to rein in the amount of jewelry.
That said, I Akso havd dime pieces with gold or more bronze tone because either the pice was a perfect style( for necklaces, length and weight to work with tops) or I like how they look with certain color clothing.

All the time. Honestly it doesn't even occur to me to check most of the time. I usually wear one platinum, one white gold, and one silver ring. If I had yellow gold rings I'd wear them with these without a second thought (the platinum and white gold are my wedding and engagement rings that I wear every day). My most commonly worn watches are both gold cases with leather bands.

I haven't been wearing bracelets lately but when I did I wore all sorts of metals in various combinations.

I love to mix metals but as I have said many many times, I am not matchy-matchy at all. I love asymmetry, I love JFE, and sometimes I am vigorously anti-matchy-matchy. So it's a personal thing.

Left hand: gold engagement/wedding rings, silver ring with tiny gold accents, big gold watch (I lost my silver one but I would wear it if I still had it)
Right hand: stack of eight very thin individual bands, 3 gold, 5 silver; if wearing bracelets, often a mix of gold and silver and sometimes copper.

Like Style Fan, I really don't pay attention to the color of the metal. It's more about the feel/style of the item.

I mix metals all the time. My wedding rings are gold, the 2 watches I wear the most are stainless steel and gold and the bangle I wear on my left hand is sterling silver. On my right hand I wear a silver cuff with a small amount of gold or an amber bracelet. I sometimes wear other rings and they might be gold or silver.
The majority of my earrings are silver. I do have some dressy event earrings that are gold. I have both silver and gold necklaces.
I have other jewellery that I wear for special events. Sometimes I will wear my gold bangles, pearl and white gold bracelet, etc. I do not pay attention to the colour of the metal. If it looks good together then great. If not I take it off.

I've always worn silver watches to coordinate with my platinum wedding bands ... until I recently bought a gold watch. I still notice it, but I love the watch so much it doesn't bother me. When the gold watch comes out, I always wear gold jewelry.

I mix metals all the time, both with my necklaces , bangles, rings, earrings, etc. I have neutral coloring and look good in both gold and silver. I still like gold even with my grey hair, although some people may disagree.

When I was younger I never mixed the colours of metals. I wore white gold, platinum and silver only. Over the years I've received various rings in yellow gold handed down through the generations. They are a variety of gem stones. Now I have rings that are either white metal or yellow metal so I wear them according to the colour of the stone. Three or four blue sapphire rings with my blue ensembles, the emeralds with my green pants, pearls with white jeans - you get the idea. I think the stones are more noticeable then the colour of the metal when I wear a few together.
Best wishes.
Denise

I personally rarely mixed metals. Not because it can't be done, but because I never liked it for myself. Some people wear a piece or two that incorporates both metals and that ties everything together.
