I like Angie's vest suggestion, and these have been on my list, but I haven't succeeded yet.

Have you tried a Kimono jacket? It wouldn't be constrictive, or hot, and as your post-partum shape slowly changes, it would go right along for the ride. And there is a way to tie a long, wide shawl-type scarf that turns it into a drape front vest.

I hate having to remove the Third Piece when it warms up during the day because there goes the oomph in my whole ensemble. I don't love scarves either. Love the idea of the open shirt as a topper. In the summer shoes and sunglasses become more important. I guess a cute hat could also be a Third Piece in hot weather.

Since you're uncomfortable in jackets, don't run cold and don't enjoy wearing scarves - I vote vests. Lightweight, less restrictive than a jacket and doesn't get in the way like a scarf.

I'm short, and this topper hit me at high mid-thigh, which I find to be really flattering. The holes make it not hot, but the sleeves make me more comfortable inside when the AC is running. I have another, similar cardigan in a linen blend knit, but I don't see it on the Loft website right now.

I'm now officially ISO long and longer cardigans, because I feel so fab in them.

I wouldn't think that jewelry would be a third piece. It's more like the cherry on a sundae. ;)

I would think that you could call a lightweight shirt over a tank your third piece. This might work for you if you tend to run hot, as it doesn't have to be form-fitting or snug. I'd also a denim jacket, cardigan, shawl or vest to be a topper.

I prefer the third piece, and I'm very sorry in the cold weather when I'm at 5 or 6 pieces and look like an ambulatory black sleeping bag.

However, on hot days, an interesting print top, extra jewelry, extra nice shoes and bright lipstick can be a big help.

I've been thinking on this more, and when I fontcwear a jacket, I always reach for a necklace to complete the outfit. I have a few longer necklaces that I like for this these days. These are less hot and bulky in the summer too.

Agreeing with Sveta. Our summers are hot & apart from when in in air-con I can't wear toppers. Shoes, a great dress & a cuff are my go to pieces.

I am with Kiwigal. I am not much of a topper person anyway, and I have noticed that I can get away without one if I have a very interesting top. I also agree with Sveta that a very interesting pair of shoes can do wonders for an outfit.

I run hot, so it's rare for a cardigan or jacket to stay on all day. Even lightweight pullovers must have a tee under them so I can shed the warmer layer. My outfits usually rely on my shoes to complete the look, I think. But I've also been looking for vests or sleeveless cardigan type things to add some interest.

I've also had trouble this year with finding jackets that fit over some of my favorite tops. Today I wore a boxy wool sleeveless top with fairly bulky shoulders (not quite shoulder pads, but that gives the right idea). It doesn't fit well under my jean jacket or my leather jacket, so I ended up grabbing a giant cocoon cardigan that was too warm. Anyway, that sleeveless top is definitely an item that doesn't call for a topper for aesthetic reasons, just for practical reasons when I know it'll be cold at night.

I think tops with inbuilt interest are a great idea.

Ie a print, embellished neckline, sheer panel, draping etc...

I think vests are best with either a sleeveless top or long sleeves under, rather than short.

I wear necklaces, bracelets, hats....and a lot more print in summer. I don't often wear scarves until autumn.

I struggle with the the same issue and have recently boxed up all my wretched scarves. They seemed like a great idea when I was buying them but I can't stand having them on. Since I like the 'column of color' look right now, I'm experimenting with my 'completer' piece being some interesting shoes, or a belt that's more noticeable than I would regularly choose (brighter, patterned or textured). I'm liking it so far. Also, I am usually a clear coat of polish person, but am also finding that if I paint my nails or wear an oversize watch or a chunky bracelet, that adds more visual impact than another layer of clothing that I don't really want to be wearing. Depends on your body type, but it sounds like you want something to tie your outfit together, and maybe that doesn't have to be another layer.

Last summer, I wore a utility vest a lot. For the past six months, I've been wearing my black pleather moto vest constantly but its fabrication make it less appealing in the summer. This summer, I'm hoping to find a pale blue or white denim vest or moto vest. The moto would probably be more flattering. These things have to hit at the right place; my moto vest hits at my sweet spot.

I don't like cardigans, but I now have a couple of lightweight mesh pullovers that I would wear over a tank or cami maybe in a contrasting color. Wonder if those pullovers would be considered a third piece?

FWIW, fabric on my neck makes me warmer so I'm less inclined to wear scarves in warm weather. You may not like scarves because they can be fussy with long hair.

I'm a big believer in the third piece but our scorching summers made it difficult. My favorites are vests over a tank or other sleeveless top, several bracelets worn at once, or small or thin scarves rolled, sometimes knotted, and tied behind the neck. On really hot days if I need to be out, I soak a cotton bandana, wring it out well and proceed to roll and tie. It can keep me cool for hours. Of course this is very casual but it adds an extra something to shorts and a tee.
What else helps is seeking out warm weather tops with interest built in. I have a brown knit sleeveless top with beads sewn around the neckline and another sleeveless top that came with a large bow seven to the front. They don't need a third piece.

Shoes! they really can elevate the simplest 2 or even 1 piece outfit (dress) to the next level. Never underestimate the power of the current and stylish footwear!
Saying that I am "lucky" that I run cold so I can wear toppers in the office (freeze without them) and even outdoors in summer - unless it is really sweltering. I don't wear cardigans so for me it is denim jackets and lightweight jackets. This year I am dipping my toes into summer vests as well: my coated utility vest from BR is cotton so it should work. The white leather vest from BR is still under consideration but it has a potential as well!

I have two formulas for work clothing: pants, top or shirt, and jacket, plus a scarf and jewelry; or pants, tunic-y shirt, belt and jewelry. Maybe a scarf, too. My casual uniforms are pants and an untucked shirt plus sandals and always, jewelry. So if I'm not wearing a jacket, my completer piece is a belt and/or jewelry. I seldom if ever wear skirts or dresses because they are all too short for my tall frame.

I think the 3rd piece can be a cardigan or jacket but it can also be an interesting belt, shoes, scarf, statement necklace... I pretty much have the same problem with scarves as you although I've found that infinity scarves feel a lot less fussy and I manage to leave them on longer.

I hear you, Thistle, ....plenty of days I put the scarf on while getting ready to see if it "feels" right....some days it gets yanked off and a necklace goes in its place. Just remember, the point is to look and feel well dressed, and put together....that can be minimalist, too. I consider a good haircut, and some lipstick and makeup part of the "completer" too. I wear dresses alot in the summer so it's not as if I always need much else. But the difference between throwing a dress on and going out the door, or throwing the dress on, and adding earrings, and acute chunky necklace or bracelet--I feel more put together....

It's too hot where I live to wear a third piece of clothing. I use light scarves, statement and long necklaces, and bracelets to add interest. I think having interesting shoes elevates an outfit too.

Have you tried some different scarf tying techniques? Maybe you can find a way to tie them that doesn't bug you so much.

I consider a really interesting pair of shoes, a bag, sunglasses, hat or an attention getting haircut as a third piece. I don't wear cardis much anymore and blazers and jackets will be gone once the humidity hits.

Maybe I've interpreted "3rd piece" incorrectly, but I think of more as a "completer piece".....A jacket that you can keep on qualifies, but so would a cardigan. I live in hot Arizona, so jackets/sweaters look ridicutous outside when it's 110, although I do have a few very lightweight linen jackets for this purpose, and adds layer for a/c (since menopause, I no longer run so cold....something good came of that 7 years of hot flashes:)). For me, I use chunky jewelry, or a very lightweight scarf, nice sandals and handbag, good looking sunglasses....I think of these things (not all at once) as my "completer pieces" in the hot hot hot of summer. The rest of the time, it's a jacket or topper of some kind.....

I have a super long (like, 7 feet) super skinny (less than 2 inches) scarf I made ages ago that fits this bill: I can tie it around my head like a scarf/headband, or wear it around my neck like a necklace, or if I was shaped differently like a low-slung belt. But aside from this one piece, I struggle with a third piece in warm weather, too.

I usually run cold, but I also find I overheat easily, especially if I'm exercising.

I have 3-4 of these bolero toppers that I bought for flamenco several years ago.

A lot of our dancers wear them, we tend to use these for class-to-streetwear.

As it happens, they have turned out to be a very handy summer topper. I'm on my third or fourth spring/summer season with this style. It makes a shorts or skirt outfit just a little dressier with some low wedge sandals, keeps me comfy in A/C, but doesn't make me feel like I'm baking when I'm walking around outside. If it is 95+ outside, and I get too hot, these little shrugs are easy to take off and roll up into a small little bundle to fit inside my purse.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Womens.....1147032084...

Georgia can get sweltering in the summer, but the A/C in most places is ridiculously cold, so I generally always have some sort of topper with me. It might be one of these shrugs, my cropped lightweight jeans jacket or seasonless lightweight wool blazer which generally works for me up to about 90-degree weather. Or my topper might be a lightweight long-sleeve or 3/4 sleeve tee I can pull over what I'm wearing, or an oversize cotton scarf, draped loosely.

I also tend to treat hats as the third piece/topper in summer. I always admire statement necklaces on others, worn with a tank top or s/s tee, but I feel like it's too heavy for me during warm months.

I generally have a topper. My lab is freezing so I always need something for indoors there. On hot summer days, I stick the topper in my bag when I go outside. ETA: but then I have my bag with me, which also could work as a third piece when one is out and about.

I like jackets, interesting cardis (not classic fitted ones), and vests. I don't like to match to my pants, IMO it looks too suit-like and formal (and can look off if it's not an exact match).

ETA: A long pendant necklace can work in the heat for a third piece and adds a little drama. I don't like to wear shorter ones in hot weather because they stick to my skin.

I would do a short sleeve sweater in the summer that buttons up. I consider a sweater as a topper. I layer usually short sleeved jackets or scrunch the sleeves of them and sweaters. I will use an infinity scarf as a shrug it just depends.

I consider cardigans toppers. In spring and summer, I wear my denim jackets (one light wash and one dark). I also bought a white topper from zara last year to wear in summer. I was off cardis for several years but have added one this spring. So, in short, I have four toppers in rotation this summer. I will see how it goes. Toppers are a must for me as a/c at work is very cold.
