The color tone of the mirror can also play tricks with how "good" you look. Bronze toned mirrors are usually more flattering. Lighting is also important, lighting from the top always casts downward shadows and is the least flattering. It is always better to have lighting coming from various directions. Lighting on both sides of your bathroom or dressing mirror is always going to be better than lighting just from the top of the mirror shining downward. That's why I can't stand ceiling "can" lights - unless there are plenty of lamps or lower placed sconces in the room.

I like the square paper trick - I'm going to try it on my mirror.

I think lisap said it best ....... I'm sure we all know instinctively when the mirror is off. The mirror in our front hall is extremely flattering and everyone who arrives at our house makes a comment about it (in the most delighted way, even men!) It's a wonderful spirit booster even when you know it's just an illusion.

I think you can tell if a mirror is "skinny" by placing your hand up to the mirror. The hand will look distorted.

Lol a slightly tilted mirror is good for my ego, too. Having said that, mine hangs flat against the wall. Actually the bigger issue is side-light mirrors. They always make my face look older. I like full light!

Hahaha.
I just always have to do the at-home test. Not always sure if it's the mirrors, or lighting, or buyer's rapture, but a "second look" helps, and I'm trying to be ruthless if I am thinking, why did I bring this home?

I read a trick that works for me...Take a square piece of paper and hold it up in front of the mirror. Our eye can't see the stretch in irregular objects but can identify when a proportional, square shape warps into a rectangle. Sometimes it's pretty shocking to see how far out of square it is.

My other, less technical, trick is to look at how I look in the clothes I wore into the store compared to how I know I look. I check myself out in my street clothes as soon as I get in the dressing room, then try on clothes, then put my street clothes back on and compare how I feel I look in them compared to the tried on clothes. If the clothes I tried on aren't better looking in the store mirror than what I wore from home, I pass. This system works pretty well for me.

I'm with you Stylefan, I look pretty good in my mirror at home and then awful in my mirror at work. And some days I'm feeling good but catch a glimpse in a window and think what the heck! I'm not really sure how I look!

I think they can be slightly warped so the vertical view is stretched, even if they are placed flat to the wall. Lol, you can try looking at the same thing (like your leg) kicked out the side or straight up and down, and see if you notice a difference maybe? I can usually tell more extreme cases especially if I back up far away from the mirror -- for example looking at the mirror at the end of the dressing room corridor from a distance.

I almost always duck out of the dressing room to look at a mirror in the body of the store wearing my try-on clothes to check color and transparency, since those are the areas where dim dressing rooms can really be confounding.

I have noticed a few stores have "skinny mirrors". I look considerably slimmer at the store than I do at home. Are they a special purchase?
My mirror at home is the opposite. Even slanted against the wall I look bigger than in my pics. I have no idea what I really look like unless Mr SF takes a pic.

I guess I just have a hard time with mirrors I have two mirrors in my guest bathroom, both hung on the wall, and between the two I look different -- I guess part of it is a change in lighting as several of you mention. I go into Macy's and I look another way... and then Nordstrom and, when I can actually make myself out in the dim, I look different again.

Lisa and Janet -- I hear you. I asked the question because I was shopping and really didn't trust what I was seeing ... and yet couldn't figure out how they would have been able to change the mirror as it was straight up and down.

Ha! I'm with Lisa. I'm always suspicious when I try on something and I seem to look slim (relatively speaking) in the mirror. I wonder about Anthro sometimes.

And as much as I love Nordstrom, I think a lot of the lighting in their dressing rooms really sucks.

Compare it to the one you have at home. That's what I do. Your dressing room at home is always best.

Also, if your mirror at home is very slanted when leaning against a wall - it will create distorted "longer and leaner" body and outfit proportions. So if your full length mirror is free-standing like ours, make sure it's positioned as close to the wall as possible.

I am wondering if it is the quality of a mirror. Some cheap mirrors give what is some type of distortion. I also believe it may be certain lighting in the stores.
