Actually I've owned many pairs through the years for horse riding. In the US they are called half chaps and I've attached lots of pics in this link: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=half+chaps&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8#q=half+chaps&rls=en&tbm=shop">http://www.google.com/search?c.....038;rls=en</a> I've never worn them as non-gear, but they are great and comfortable, and you can wear them with different boots. In my case, with fleece lined boots in the winter, non-lined boots in the summer. I'm wearing them in my profile picture, and I think they are often indistinguishable from regular boots.  From a gear standpoint, they often come with an elastic panel which makes them snug-fitting, and comfortable. (My most comfortable non-gear boots have elastic in the calf as well.) However, I find over time the elastic will stretch out, shortening their lifespan, but also requiring a very snug fit in the calf when you first purchase them. Just something to keep in mind, even though I assume you will not use them for actual horsey stuff. Wearing minichaps. This is an idea I have had before, but never put into practice. I like them, and they would be a way to use booties, shooties and perhaps even certain shoes as 'boots'. My feet are getting fussier and fussier, so I am thinking this might be useful if it allowed me to use some confortable shoes as boots. What do you think? Has anyone already tried this?
