Isn't it funny... I thought this post WAS current! I guess one thing never changes for most of us - buying and item that we think will be a workhorse, and then realizing down the line that it just isn't working.

LOL! I didn't see the thread was a year old. Regarding purchasing mistakes, I think Sterling summed it up nicely: "The real mistake would have been keeping them and forcing yourself to wear something that isn't quite right."

Good devidions! It helps to hear how other people analyze why something isn't working- often I'll have an aha! And get unstuck over something myself.

Shannon I hear myself in what you're saying. I am thrifty to the point of frugality so it pains me when I have to accept I've blundered with a purchase. Also, when you say you have no regrets about your pricier purchases - yes, exactly, that has been my experience this past winter when I spent big (for me) dollars on three key item. I have breezed through the season with conplete confidence and no misgivings at all. It wasn't easy for me to take the plunge to buy higher end items but it has so been worth it.

Thank you for your post even if it was a year ago! I have clothes that I never wear because I have some strange idea that I might suddenly start wearing a totally different style. Who am I kidding?

I appreciate your honesty. It is hard to say good bye to clothing but I have tried to learn from my mistakes. For example, I don't buy button front shirts.

I found a few mistakes when I purged. I am trying to make fewer mistakes. Not shopping this month has helped. I went through my finds tonight and added a few things, and deleted a few things. We all make mistakes we just have to learn from them.

Thank you for sharing that you still make mistakes. I'm beginning to think that, while I hope to make fewer of them, mistakes are just part of the process of wardrobe building and to move on. Mine are most often pieces that I think will be workhorses...basics. Maybe too basic to be special ?

I completely agree on your last point. I now know it's a bad sign when the main reason why I want to buy something is that it's inexpensive. It means I'll wear it once or twice and then move on. Whereas if I hem and haw over the price I know that I love the item and will get lots of wear out of it!

Shannon, you're brave to purge so often. I get queasy when I decide to purge something that either hasn't been worn more than a couple of times or (and this is what's happening to me now) something i just bought a couple of months ago. But I am finding that these fast into the purge pile items were things that were a really good price and maybe it was the price I was most attracted to! Like you, I don't this issue with full price items because I've really thought it through before I made the purchase. I find I go through phases. Buy just a few well-selected pieces, then months later buy a lot (a lot!) of crap. I guess it's part of the journey, right?

Thank you for sharing your purging decisions Shannon. Looking at the pictures I can understand why you were attracted to each one of your mistakes and although it is absolutely right to purge them, don't be hard on yourself! You have learned you prefer geometric patterns - that is the kind of insight that really moves you forward and prevents the next mistake. Inspirational as always!

I have an apple green suede designer bag. At half off, it cost what I normally spend for an investment purse. I CANNOT figure out how to style it. I've worn it maybe twice in a year!

I purged last night--was embarrassed to find clothes I forgot I had--and was thinking that maybe Angie and Janice of The Vivienne Files are right, that I could afford to spend more on items that were super well selected. That carried their weight in capsules. Building them is so much harder than I think it should be!

Thanks all, so therapeutic to report our mistakes together!

Always good to know I'm not the only one who makes these kind of mistakes!

Deborah - glad I could give you a giggle! I can't even claim I was drunk at the time - don't know what happened there...

Janet, Kari & Suz - what's kind of funny with the skirt is that it is only a tiny bit itchy when standing up because of course the fabric isn't as close to your body, but as soon as you sit down....oh man...CRAZY itchy as that wool presses into your butt...being that I can't work standing up all day - it's gotta go even though it's lovely. And you're right that you don't really know to the extent how uncomfortable it's going to be until you've worn it all day.

CC - thanks for the reminder about the blazer. I do think it will work well under my black leather blazer.

Thanks for chiming in all! Like you say - onward and upward!

I am planning to do a closet purge today as well, and many items I have are pretty nice. I'm going to save them in a bag in another closet for our next swap meet because I can't bear to send them off the goodwill.

Shannon good for you. I do similar on a regular basis too. Most recently I bought a skirt and the tones are just wrong. Wore it for a second time last week, got home, took it off and threw it in my donate tub! I think you illustrate a good point and that is that a garment may be well made, excellent quality, even a good price point but those things don't always make it a right or a good piece for us to add to our closet. I'm off to find your thread on #2 cos I only have a vague recollection of it. #4 did give me a giggle as I just cannot see you in this:). If it makes you feel better, My "what was I thinking" moments are getting fewer but ....

You. Are. Wonderful.

I love that you are sharing your "mistakes" with us here. I have a list as long as my arm, honestly.....can you say FUCHSIA SILK SUIT??????

Okay, well that was a $20 mistake that wasn't completely a mistake because I got at least $20 worth of wear from the little top, so even if I never wear the pants and the jacket again (and I won't) it was still okay. But there are a number of items sitting in my closet that just don't work for me.

I agree that the comfort factor is key. And you know what? Sometimes we just can't tell what that is going to be in advance. I adore that skirt you are purging and can easily see why it tempted you!! How were you to know it would itch like mad? I have similar issues with clothes that turn out to itch, cling, stretch and bag, sag, etc.

I need to do a cull of my closet soon, too. There are a few items that might have to go soon, I fear.

I understand about the VC teal top. I sent mine back because the colour isn't right for me.

Shannon, regarding your unworn teal top, but sure to remember that it looks wonderful with a blazer: http://youlookfab.com/2012/07/.....-ensemble/

Oh, I have made so many of those mistakes in the past! I'm realizing that what you mentioned with item #3 tends to be my most major downfall - something may be high quality and look fine on the rack, or perhaps it looks good on me if I'm standing still, but the comfort factor drives me batty. If it itches, binds, scoots around on my body when I move, I just can't handle it! But those mistakes have taught me to be much more discerning over time about bypassing cute items that are going to be fussy or uncomfortable.

I have a few this year myself that didn't get worn even. But cutting your losses and letting go is a wonderful thing. Onward and upward!

Good riddance! Room for the new! You are wise to clean out your closet every month like this, and face your "mistakes".

I love that skirt -- too bad the discomfort factor is so bad! I have little patience for that too -- I am trying to be wiser about anticipating itch potential and other comfort pitfalls before I buy something, but sometimes you have to wear it for a while to know!

Well, I have some expensive lessons behind me too, so I guess we all live and learn!
