Adelfa, indeed---I wish I could layer, but the heat and humidity here are quite the deterrent.

Lantana, for many Indian communities as well as I think many vegetarians/vegans worldwide, the conventional silks are taboo because the silkworms have to be killed to harvest the silks. Although in India it is possible to get 'alternative silks' (ahimsa or non-violence silk they are called, made up of slubbier, shorter and fluffier threads from cocoons harvested after the silk moth has exited) as well as wild silks.

Vildy, I actually have had several more flared kameezes made out of fabric cut on the bias, typically out of a saree length. Not terribly uncommon here though not exactly the norm either. And my bias-cut handloom skirts have been lifesavers through pregnancy.

Beth Ann, knits are easily found. Hi-tech (quick drying) not so much. Mostly cottons in mostly T-shirts, some polyesters and viscoses from international brands. Styles more limited than in the US for sure. But not, as Angie would say, a train smash. Nursing wear hard to find. What there is tends to very expensive or super frumpy and bothersome with ties and strings and whatnot. Front-open bras used to be common but have unaccountably gone out of fashion since my girlhood! I got a decent deal on some Motherhood Maternity and Cantaloop bras though---and they aren't as bad as the typical moulded cups with unwieldy clips.

I hear you, Mandipa! This is the time for fabric that drapes well, but doesn't cling, and that launders without fuss. I didn't find "nursing wear" helpful, and also didn't wear a "nursing" bra, but a front close, or one with cups that could be moved out of the way.

Are these fabrics and garments hard to find in your area?

One thought about wovens - I would suppose that most traditional Indian garments are not cut on the bias but what if you had not-too-stiff woven fabric made into bias garments? Bias generally used for skirts but it sets me wondering if anyone in the world has tried for tops, tunics.

Manidipa, excuse my ignorance but what are the ethical issues around silk? I don't live in the mainstream of life so I would appreciate some elucidation.

Manidipa, you're so right about the sheerness. It's less with darker colors. Sometimes I wear a tank top underneath (more coverage than a cami) and sometimes that doesn't feel appropriate so I pass for that day on the fine gauge woven.

Suz---yeah, should be obvious, eh? In my defence I just love our textiles so much that I keep gravitating to the traditional.

Natalie---doing well! and yeah, hope so too.

Diane---am so tempted by all the mixed fabrications around now! Not found a nursing-friendly one yet...

Here is my epiphany, for what it is worth.

For me, it's knits all the way when I am working at home in the cooler months. I can wear denim (woven) bottoms as long as they are loose or have stretch. But for tops at home -- knits.

In summer -- tops can be wovens if they are not very fitted, are sleeveless, and/or can crush (linen's ideal).

I save my crisp wovens for when I am not working at home in winter. I wear my silk also (on the whole) when I'm not working at home.

I would think with a small baby, knits would feel even more appropriate.

Mani, great epiphany! I totally don't understand or pay attention to fabric composition, but admire those who can tell the difference! I can't wait to see more of your WIW's again! How are you and the baby doing?

I don't wear many wovens either. Actually my latest sale purchase was a combination of fine drapey woven viscose at the front and a viscose knit at the back. It fall beautifully. It's a good feeling to get some clarity I'll bet?

Ramya, high five! I adore Mangalgiri...and have the hardest time wearing it. Once upon a time, as a college kid, I wore them starch-free on a daily basis, willy nilly---every single day, it drew the same comment from my mum: 'Did you pull that out of a water jar ('ghoti' in Bangla, if you have any acquaintance with the language)?!' One trick I found---embroidery or something embellishing the hem will often pull it straight-ish if hung up carefully while damp.

Adelfa, I may not be shopping much for a while with an ever-changing body these days (is it going to be another year before my shape and size settle, I wonder?). But I will try my best to post more often whatever I wear---it's not been happening, but I hope to get back in 'view' soon! And yes, agree with the fine wovens---love them and don't see them in shops often enough in cottons that aren't outright sheer, more's the pity.

I am totally with you on the don't-do-crisp. I've discovered that a very fine gauge woven can drape enough to be flattering. But I adore knits! Can't wait to see yours!

Today's Link Love crosslink to Already Pretty made a lightbulb go off! Thanks, Inge and Vildy!

So... I need knits.

Many of my orphans are wovens. I adore woven Indian textiles. But wovens are often stiff rather than drapey. I don't do crisp. Though crushed is fine, once in a while, thus linen or jute. But cottons, unless lightweight or serge, not so much.

And wovens can be bulkier too. I'm often too hot or too cold. So I need better layering.

So. I need knits. Not necessarily frumpy T-shirts.

And maybe a few silks, though I have ethical issues with much of it.

Yeah, cotton/viscose/modal/bamboo knits sound better.

Thanks again,ladies!
