I finally made a milk tart and am currently enjoying some for breakfast! I see why it’s called milk tart (vs custard) It reminds me of fried milk, a Chinese dessert that was trendy in Toronto 10-15 years ago.

A UK food specialty shop opened in my neighbourhood, so I used it as an excuse to make a start on my goals to make the tart, plus Anzac ‘biscuits’. Truthfully the custard powder and Lyle’s syrup are often available at major grocers too, but it gave me an excuse to check out a new local business and pick up some other treats Then I was tickled by the fact they gave me an apple green bag, a colour I love and associate with Angie and ylf!

It’ll be a week or two before I do any baking as it was my younger daughter’s 16th birthday yesterday - I made a complicated apple pie layer cake for the family, and also ordered this pretty cake for her party with friends last weekend.

Well Jules and Style Fan my husband actually made some Nanaimo bars last year for his 2 Canadian staff members! He researched quite a few recipes (all of which claimed to be “the best”) and the two staff members insisted he should use Bird’s custard powder. Of course we didn’t have that, but our good old NZ brand Edmond’s custard powder came through.
They both said they were delicious and possibly the best ones they had tasted

The milk tart looks delicious, but I rarely make desserts. I do make Nanaimo bars and use custard powder. I found the custard powder in the 'International Foods' section of the local grocery store.

Angie, your Scandi kitchen looks gorgeous.

I think the original post got me, lol!
The recipe is quite interesting - there are so many global variations on the "custard tart" theme, I like to learn about them even if I never end up making the recipe. Here in Canada, custard powder is used in the iconic Nanaimo Bars.

Well being a British colony we certainly have custard powder. I have been doing a lot of tidying up at home lately (almost 7 years in this new house and stuff has accumulated, needs paring down) and saw that I have a box of custard powder just the other day.
I made a lemon cheesecake at the weekend to take to friends, it has as much rich stuff (cream cheese, whipping cream etc) as your tart.
But what is “cornstarch”? I assume that might be what we call cornflour? Can anyone help? I have that.

As promised for those interested.

My SIL is a chef at a great London restaurant. She asked for this recipe, which outshone all the others she tried. The restaurant is using it. Enough said :)

You need to get a specific ingredient off Amazon. Custard powder. See Find.

It's a temperamental dessert to make. You need to make it the day before you are serving it. It has to set and infuse.

Do not substitute ingredients! This is not for dairy-free or gluten-free diets. Be exact with measurements and method.

The recipe is on the blog. It was an April Fool's Day post 12 years ago, but the recipe is pukka (authentic):

https://youlookfab.com/2013/04.....milk-tart/

Keep the base THIN - so cut off the excess bits as you press it into the tin.

Use a large pie tin with removable sides.

I've made a few since we moved back into our remodeled loft, since it's a requested dessert by dear friends! Exhibit A is the one I made a few weeks ago. And our new Scandi kitchen has a turquoise backsplash.

Feel free to ask questions. Hope it works out. xo
