Thimbelina gives great examples of skirt lengths and perfectly describes the categories in which I would place them as well.

The midi can definitely be tricky to style. I almost always prefer it with a heel of some kind, regardless of hem length.

I agree with Thimbelina and Sveta's descriptions of length. I wear knee length, midi and maxi skirts or dresses, mostly dresses. I own five skirts in total of which really only one is well worn ( classic black pencil skirt).

I prefer knee length and midis with either a heel or tall boots on me. If I want to wear flats I usually wear a maxi dress or pants or shorts.

I think it is a case of experimenting and finding the good combinations that work.

I agree with Sveta as well. The pictures she posted are what I define as midi-length. (Sveta most definitely wears skirts well).

I personally wear skirts in two different lengths. The first and most flattering for me ends right at the top of the knee cap. The second is the length you showed in Number 1 above. Experience has taught me that these two lengths work best for me. Anything longer and I move into frumpy.

You're absolutely right Janet. Everybody needs to know their own personal 'magic' hem lengths!

I agree with Sveta. All the photos AT posted look like midis to me. Maxis hit the foot, or at least come to the ankle. I mostly stick with midi lengths myself, although I do have some knee length skirts/dresses, and a very few that are above-knee.

It's all about proportions, thimbelina! I'm barely an inch taller than you, but maybe because all my height is in my legs, midi lengths (definitely below the knee) tend to be my most flattering (it might also have something to do with the shape of my legs, which are not my most fab feature). I think footwear makes a big difference -- what works with heels might not look quite right with flats, but I'm really hard to please when it comes to skirts (for myself), so what bothers my eye might work perfectly fine to someone else.

Sveta wears midis so beautifully! Those are wonderful examples. (I am only 5'6" and find knee length a little more flattering at that height...)

I currently have one modest mini, two knee length skirts and two midis. One of the midis is on the longer end and the other on the shorter. I wear the latter much more. I wear everything with flats or less than 1" heels 90% of the time.

I would call all three of those midi skirts. For me midi is any skirt which extends below the knees but does not reach the ankles. I have several midis but none of them as long as pics 2 and 3.

I may be living in my own little skirt world but here it goes:

I define mini as anything that hits above the kneecap.

Skirts that hit anywhere from the very top of the patella to the bottom, in no way obscuring where the the calf naturally narrows at the knee I consider knee length.

To me, midi means it ends somewhere clearly into the calf, upper middle or lower ranges inclusive.

If it ends right above the ankle bones fully displaying the feet & any footwear being worn it is the length known as tea. (This length was permissible in my daughters ballroom class where maxis weren't...)

I believe a true maxi length ends somewhere in the foot zone. Just like with flares individual preference will dictate just how much actual floor sweep a person can tolerate. I personally don't like to look like I am doing the work of a roomba robotic vacuum so my hems always clear the floor by a half inch or so.

There seems to be a little confusion about midi and maxi skirt lengths. Looking a pinterest they call anything from knee to ankle a midi and maxi length almost always drags the ground Then on Nordstroms I find skirts just below knee just labled skirts, lengths like photo 1 called midis and the other two photos were called maxi. I have two that are the length Nordies calls maxi. I also have a white linen that is just below the widest part of my leg. This I would call midi. I do not wear this skirt, and am considering purge, but waiting. Do you wear any of these length skirts? If so would like to see photos of how you style them.

I do not wear heels with my maxi ones, but nothing seems right with the midi. I also do not want anything, pants or skirt, to be so long it covers shoes.
