Bijou I wish you comfort in a stepped-up loungewear game! Great point about people keeping really good jeans until they wear out. Although, every time people on the forum mention donating their low-rise jeans I think: I ought to go thrifting and try to find some low-rise jeans! Truth is I haaaaate thrifting for jeans though, so tedious.

FashIntern interesting idea about whether my lounge/pj/gear experience could help me figure out those harder to manage categories. My sense right now is that those other categories contain a lot of items that are hard to wear because I lack completer pieces (e.g., lots of blue shirts that I would get a lot more wear out of if I had a pair of gray jeans). But I need to ponder further...

lisa p well I'm sorry to have given you the sense of having "homework" but I do hope your closet sorting is productive! YES to sub-seasonal capsules!! I look forward to learning how you make this work in your new space.

Angie, yes, when I start to see it all as a jigsaw puzzle it CAN be fun! You are dead right about "you can't buy something that isn't there." It's frustrating, but there's nothing for it but patience. I have some great 3/4-sleeve tops to wear with my skirts, and I keep feeling like there ought to be an equivalent sleeveless version that would enable me to wear them in warmer weather. Haven't had luck yet. That's ok. Skirts will likely be a mild summer outfit formula for me this year. I can wear my sundresses, or shorts and lightweight popover tops, on the hottest days.

On the "patience" front, I had another realization the other day. I realized that because I have framed this "wardrobe-building" endeavor as a one-year process, I was feeling the pull of a sort of panic buying -- like I had better amass the most complete possible wardrobe before "time's up." No!!!! Wrong approach! I do believe that at the end of this year I will see marked improvements in the structure and function of my wardrobe. That was my goal. Not a "complete" wardrobe. It is often better to go slow anyway. Then I can try something out and find out if it is really the direction I want to go before committing to it. And sometimes I find out that I need fewer items in a category than I thought I did.

Sterling, your responses are always so generous. Thank you for your kind words. And thank you for your wisdom about the pleasure of good loungewear. I will definitely be putting your advice into practice.

Hi SarahD8 -- I thought I had commented earlier.

Let me endorse the idea of a carefully curated lounge capsule. I rebuilt my lounge capsule from scratch and it brings me so much comfort and joy. It is worth investing in these pieces because they are worn so much. We might as well be as stylish as we can be in the comfort of our homes. Your idea of heather gray, light-medium blue, and pink sounds perfect. I adore pale blush/ballet pink and it will be perfect for you.

You write brilliant, thought provoking posts. I always benefit from all your hard work. Thank you for always breaking the ground for me.

Wardrobe Capsuling is what I have been preaching for years and continue to preach! You have to think about and break down your wardrobe into small groups, and figure out how the pieces and groups relate to each other - as well as how they relate back to your needs and preferences. It's a fun jigsaw puzzle that takes time, energy and resources....

THANK YOU FOR YOUR EPIPHANY, SarahD8. You are well on your way to getting to exactly where you need to be, and I'm impressed. WELL DONE.

Another thought:

You can have a great plan of how you want to change/refresh your wardrobe and style for the season that looks great on paper and in your head. But you cannot buy something that isn't there, or make something work that is too hard to style and feel fab in. So you have to be flexible and satisfied with what you CAN do in a season. That is good enough :)

Whoo boy. This was a great read over my first cup of the day (yes, I'm off to late start - lol) . I feel like I have some homework now : identifying and sorting clothes into small capsules, and deciding if I want to bother looking for skirts as I have the same proportion and fit issues as you. I used to sort clothes into seasonal (broken down further beyond the 4 seasons) capsules on a rack in my bedroom. It was super helpful in getting dressed and also in identifying holes in collections . I don't want to do that in my new home (different kind of space now) but I might try to sort my closest that way. Thanks for all the inspiration this morning !

Oh - I too have a mixed-up mess of lounge wear and pyjamas , and nothing is really very special. For some reason I cringe at spending any kind of money on these pieces and like others have mentioned, end up with sale pj's and robes in random colours .

I love your analysis and think you are definitely on the road to an even more impressive wardrobe.

You are definitely onto something with loungewear and gear - I never donate them because I wear mine out. Good jeans too - they get worn until they fall apart - so these sorts of items I think you will be hard pressed to find second hand and buying new makes sense. I am pretty terrible at buying loungewear and gear because they are far less exciting to buy - you have helped me realise that if I buy anything more, that is where I need to focus my attention.

Coming back late to this but wanted to say thanks Suz for your comments. You're right that we're both on the same wavelength about the need to be able to dress for all situations without stress!

Thanks for adding those double/triple/quadruple duty finds. Yes, I see what you mean about the usefulness of cross-seasonal pieces in core neutrals. I'm finding something interesting as I think through my current wardrobe and what I need to complete outfits. I think in many cases my wardrobe is TOO neutral-heavy. I have those core neutral pieces but not the colored or patterned pieces that I prefer to make them into outfits. Does that make sense? So I'm trying to think about my additions in terms of outfit creation. For me, sometimes the really crucial puzzle piece is actually the non-neutral. Thanks for inspiring an a-ha moment!

"For me, one thing that I think will help to keep the overall closet manageable is trying to think of pieces that can pull double (or triple) duty in multiple capsules."

Absolutely. This is key. I'm going to put in Finds a bunch of pieces that for me do double/ triple/quadruple duty. Your choices would differ, of course, but they are likely to be pieces in your core neutrals that (in many cases) cross seasons. They should fit you really well, be relatively easy care, and pack well if you travel.

Some explanations: for me, jeans work across numerous capsules, but my favourite jeans are the ones that happen to fit me best. I like a slim straight best for my own proportions but that's personal.

Jackets: I have 2 that seem to work across capsules from dressy to super casual. I'll wear them with a graphic tee for casual and a silk blouse or shirt for a dressier situation.

Oooh, Suntiger -- this is pure proportion gold. All 100% true for me, too:

"As far as torso lengthening with skirts, I have a few tricks. Low-medium contrast. When available (not at present unfortunately) fitted curved hem tops with swishy skirts. Sleeveless or long sleeve, not short. And skirts that taper at the hem (as opposed to straight) can work with longer, even pants length tops. Ymmv of course!"

I'll go back to read the comments and conversation in a minute, but first, this is an excellent analysis. You're really doing the work and it is already paying off.

Plus, your realization resonates for me. It wasn't until I figured out precisely which activities I needed to dress for in which seasons and what proportion of my time I spent in each activity (roughly) that I could start to build a truly workable wardrobe—one that allowed me to get dressed for just about anything at a moment's notice without a lot of angst and frustration.

The weather piece was super-important for me, because I'm a practical dresser who spends a lot of time outdoors and I lived in a climate of extremes. But even in a more temperate climate, I find that I need to take it into consideration.

I also think it makes a LOT of sense to spend on PJs and loungewear if you spend a fair bit of time at home. This is a lesson I'm still in the process of learning. Like you, I tend to wear "demoted" items and bits and pieces found on discount. I used to do this with gear, too. But this year I finally made a more concerted effort to get a real capsule in shape for my workout wear and it has been helpful. Now I'm trying to do the same with summer PJs, so I don't look and feel like a rumpled mess when I wake up in the morning. :)

ETA! Ooops -- I see now you linked to my earlier post and mentioned the need for wardrobe click above, so DUH, yes, we are on the same wavelength! :)

You are absolutely right in your comment to Sal -- it's not that it has to be a "perfect" outfit for every occasion (whatever that would mean) but somehow you have to have the pieces in your closet that allow you to put a workable outfit together without a lot of stress. For me, it helped to identify my key neutrals and get core items in those colours (mostly denim and navy and some white, in my case). I mean -- if I have a navy winter dress and a navy summer dress, I can do a lot. Ditto pants and tops!

shevia, I'm so glad to be in good thrifting company on this forum! Even if the hodgepodge effect can be an occasional downside...

Sal, I don't think your comments were off topic at all! Very helpful thoughts in fact. You make a great point about the different occasions one might have to dress for. Suz made a comment in that thread about "wardrobe clicking" that I linked to about not feeling satisfied until she had something available to wear for all possible occasions in her life. I am coming around to thinking I am the same way. It may not be the best outfit, as you point out, and it may (actually, ideally) be made up of components that can also be worn in other ways. But something.

I had to laugh a bit at your comment about hypothetical pants that I like but don't wear often. I have 7 pairs of cold-weather pants...so they all get worn a lot, even if I don't like them! But I like the exercise you suggest, I should do that with my tops and toppers...

Liesbeth thanks for those comments about how you build silhouette-based capsules, they are very clarifying. I think that approach will be very useful for me.

Yes to small capsules! I tend to think in silhouettes (spreadsheet style), but found it works best when I have at least one favorite outfit in a given silhouette that I love. Then I can expand from there.
E.g. Some years ago I often wore skinny jeans with booties and a boxy sweater. Start with one navy pair, black booties etc (all staples of mine), from there add black jeans, brown booties, tall boots and scarf to change up the silhouette... If you go slowly, you can course-correct as often as needed.
More recently I've had to do some rebuilding myself. Everything fell into place there once I found the essential tapered dress pants. I could add from there but also style existing pieces in new ways more congruent with what I'm going for right now. I'm thinking keeping this capsule rather small and add a new bootcut jeans-based silhouette at a later time. I do like to mix and match a lot so try not to let my silhouettes run too far apart so there is at least some overlap in toppers and footwear. Anyway, just some thoughts of mine on the topic :).

I do think taking it small is a good idea - eg work out gear or work in summer...... and the nuances are important eg your torso lengthening.

I like to think about possible occasions that I might have to dress for and if I have the right outfit. I am realistic and in some cases I might not have the perfect outfit . If I look ahead for the rest of our winter I include the following

- working from our office

- working from home

- meetings with clients and associates

- smart casual lunches and dinners with friends

- running in cold mornings

- gym wear

- attending sports games in the cold

- two winter weekends at the beach

- lounging at home

There is a lot of crossover between some of these categories. There are not too many items that only fit into one category (Running in the cold morning crosses over with gym and sideline sports and what I wear at the beach). I don't have any especially dressy occasions planned July/August/September but over May/June I have had to dress for a funeral and a fancy dinner out (and the preball) - I have sufficient outfits in this area so I don't panic.

Your list might be similar except in summer, substituting the gym for the pool......you may not need client appropriate outfits or sideline outfits.

I think with the overwhelming part you could start with a pair of pants that you like but don't wear often, and try to make a couple of outfits with them..... if you can't why not? Do you need to add something or will you edit the pants out? Or something along these lines?

This is a bit long winded sorry and I might have gone off topic.

nemosmom if you try the mini capsules approach please tell us about it! I'm so curious to know how it would go for others.

bj1111 great point about transitional dressing. I actually find transitional weather super hard from a casual point of view too. One fast fallback formula that I'm coming around to is cropped jeans and a 3/4-sleeve pullover. So I think my strategy for the business capsule will be to make sure that a couple of those pullovers will work with a couple of my skirts as well.

Style Fan printed skirts are hard to resist! I'd call them my kryptonite if cardigans didn't already have firm hold on that role.

rachylou better get on it -- your fans are waiting with bated breath!

This was a great read. I love the idea of a spread sheet. I rarely wear patterns but when I do it is usually a skirt. La Ped`s husband has a good idea. Find the right tee and duplicate.
Having a wardrobe clicking is an interesting idea. It does take time and commitment to have a wardrobe work. I have realized that.

yup...patterned bottoms are my jam. So uncomfortable with pattern near the face unless it's stripes or tone-on-tone embroidery.

congrats on the realization of several tight activity x season oriented capsules. what you've outlined seem quite functional and will span the season if layered. have you considered one or two cross-over pieces in each capsule, e.g. something that can be worn with both the work-summer and work-winter capsules in the shoulder seasons?

First, I LOVE that you have a spreadsheet!

rachylou glad I'm not alone in the granular capsules department. "The seriousness of solids" -- I think we've found the title for your style memoir!

Jessikams would love to hear more as you figure out your own breakdown of capsules. For me, one thing that I think will help to keep the overall closet manageable is trying to think of pieces that can pull double (or triple) duty in multiple capsules. I can also wear those skirts in my summer business capsule more casually, for example. Your beach capsule might include a swim coverup that your mountain vacation capsule wouldn't, but a pair of quick-dry shorts might be useful in both.

Jane yes that's a very wise approach to limit the overall numbers in your closet to reduce overwhelm! I think that's exactly what I'm discovering with my realization that small capsules are more manageable.

Brooklyn I wish you luck on sorting out your summer casual capsule. You are so good at following through on your plans I have no doubt you'll nail it! Maybe you just need to find some sort of phrase or picture for aesthetic inspiration?

suntiger, thank you for these suggestions! You're right that (My)MMV but these are great starting points. I already know that I agree with you that short sleeves are mostly ugh and slim skirts can be more flexible/versatile in terms of top length.

Becky glad this was a useful discussion! And Cardiff Girl thanks for cheering me on.

bonnie maybe a mini-mini-capsule to try out a trend or two?

karen13 I wish you good luck on your tops hunt! I think it's extra-tricky for us petites.

LaPed, I think your husband is on to something! That's what I've just done for sleep tops (I'm wearing these, they are SO soft) and it's surprisingly satisfying! There's something that definitely feels weird about buying pajamas and sweatpants new when much of the rest of my wardrobe is thrifted. But when I think about it, people tend to have relatively few of these items, and wear them heavily before getting rid of them, so it makes a certain sort of sense.

Great post. I love the idea of patterned skirts and tie-front tops for you for summer. I hope you're able to find the right shirt!

I agree with you that staying on top of gear and loungewear is important and you really do feel better when those capsules are curated rather than a big mishmash. I'm pretty intentional about my gear additions, but trying to be more so about my loungewear. Like you, I use that capsule as a repository for things that are too ugly/beat-up to wear out of the house. I was just complaining to my husband about how all my sleep tops are getting to the point where they smell funky even after I wash and line-dry them (most of these tees date back 5-10 years, and almost all of them are thrifted). He suggested I *gasp!* find the perfect top for sleeping, buy multiples of it, and get rid of all the old gross ones. It's almost like having an in-house Angie!

Interesting and useful post. Sounds like you are on a great path. I am envious of your new lounge and workout capsules - I’m totally guilty of the ratty demoted description for these items that I wear every day. And nodding along at needing different tops for skirts. I have a couple casual maxis that needed that insight!

I really enjoyed reading your review. Working with defined capsules seems to be the key to building a workable wardrobe and I need to do more of that. I'm all for trying the latest trends although I'm trying to quash that impulse.

Yay to coordinated sleep and gear capsules! I used to have lots of demoted things too, and upped my game last year.
As far as torso lengthening with skirts, I have a few tricks. Low-medium contrast. When available (not at present unfortunately) fitted curved hem tops with swishy skirts. Sleeveless or long sleeve, not short. And skirts that taper at the hem (as opposed to straight) can work with longer, even pants length tops. Ymmv of course!

Well done. It makes a lot of sense to focus on one capsule at a time. I don’t have a lounge capsule but I have similar trouble getting focussed on summer casual wear. Doesn’t excite me, don’t want to spend time or money on it. But I should because I wear it more than anything. Gotta change that next summer!
