“The City” and “The Town” with those caps will always be San Francisco and Oakland, respectively, to me lol. I knew the city meant NYC because it wasn’t capitalized that way.

I love how regionally dependent the term "the city"/"city people" is in the US. Where I am in New England, it typically means New York or Boston, but go just a bit west and it always means New York. In Minnesota, it means Minneapolis; in Colorado, Denver. Big swathes of the country, I can only guess!

I have noticed the tiny (sometimes custom?) embroidery trend as well. Not just images, but words too. It has a vibe that is either old school preppy or old school service worker, depending on the iteration. I could definitely see doing this to an older piece of clothing to give it new life -- or even cover small stains/holes.

Yes I did remember that you said you were going to be a New Yorker- otherwise “the city” may have been a bit tricky! I remember Carla talking about “the big city”, that is, Toronto.
Interesting fashion report! Black is New Zealand’s national colour anyway and especially our capital city Wellington so we never really get away from black here.

Thanks also for clarifying - I'm in the US and not sure what "the city" was.

I agree that Docs and floaty skirts is SO 90s. Wow.

Love this, bj1111 anthro, and your observations are fascinating! Thanks for the "caveat" as until that moment I wasn't sure where you were located, although I knew it was in the U.S. (I'm in California) and to Angie for helping those outside the country.

(For people who are not in the US - "the city" refers to New York City here).

I have '90s and '80s flashbacks reading your report - which is right on trend :)

Wow Docs and floaty skirts sounds sort of 90s to me. Not that that should be a surprise. Thanks for the report!

Black, that is never going to change for the city. It's just a classic.

Tiny food prints, that sounds cute and fun!

The juxtaposition of docs and floaty skirts sounds interesting too, a visually interesting outfit.

Thanks for sharing your observations!

Very rough observations after a few weeks here

Docs with slip skirts or floaty skirts and going out tops on a Sat night below 42nd

Tiny food related embroidery (? Logos) on casual wear in the lower UWS—spotted a coffee, cherries, pizza slice

8am doctors commute on the north bound A train, ON gym shoes are a thing

Daytime trans dressing (eg working person dress) is definitely more common. Still draws looks and comments. Dressers are very composed going about their day. Looks get more flamboyant the lower one goes and the closer to the weekend one gets. This is a style segment that i do admire.

Black, black, BLACK

**caveat—observations are highly situational and reflect the areas of the city that I frequent. Your intrepid anthropologist will be walking the length of Broadway from upper Harlem to the Battery and will report back
