Maya, I suspect the quality is not amazing, but have a look here as well: http://www.nyandcompany.com/ny.....HowMany=25

Also, have a peek at Tulle:

http://www.tulle4us.com/style/.....8;sort=new

And - have an open mind on this one - if you go to (gulp) Victoria's Secret, there are about 70 skirts, and they just started a sale as well: http://search.victoriassecret......0&y=0

I know, I know, but just ignore all the hootchie-mama items and scan for something work-appropriate.

We never leave a retail stone unturned, Maya! Talbots is always worth a visit and their stuff gets hipper each season. I take plenty of clients there. Quality is super.

April, you are very close! Clever little sausage :0)

Yep, they were definitely the old lady store for a long time, but the thing I saw in their catalogue recently that I found jaw-droppingly gorgeous and current was this: http://www1.talbots.com/talbot.....&sk=P

I have been dying to see that "Pomegranate" color in person to know if it's something I could wear, but for reasons that passeth understanding, my local store doesn't stock the "Collection" line.

That top just went on sale today and it is sorely tempting me...

Wow, I'm used to thinking of Talbots as "that old lady store," but they actually have a few nice things. Thanks April. I would have definitely never thought to look there, but it might be worth a shot.

I realized that maybe the Express skirts aren't too long, if the ruffle part hits below my knee. I think I will just have to look for them in person. Looks like another shopping day this week. Sigh.

Maya - Talbots just started a big sale. I know they're probably not a place you usually shop, but I find them good for well-made work basics, and they are really moving away from the preppier, dowdy look that used to define them. Here are a couple of black and white skirts in a reasonable range, but check out the full assortment of sale stuff:

Some black and white skirts:

Angie, I also like pencils best. I just like A-lines for comfort in the summer, since pencils can be rather constricting and don't let air circulate as well. I am keeping my eye on this one, since the others seem like they will be too long:

http://www.express.com/catalog.....goryId=364

But I'll have to wait and see if it goes on sale. Or, hopefully I'll get a freelance gig soon and then I can buy it full price.

Brianna, a bright skirt would be fine in my profession, but I think I would want something more versatile, since I won't be buying a lot of these.

I love the ones from Express and modcloth. Perfect! Anthing with that vibe is good.

You look great in a pencil skirt, Maya. Better than an A-line imo. I can really see these styles work with graphic T’s, button downs, knit tops, your waistcoat, both your biker jackets (black and red) and boots.

Ra-ra skirts – that’s what we call them (the LC style at the top) are very hard to wear. They *can* look fabulous but I would stay away from those.

I'm sure a good tailor could work with it Brianna, but I don't have a good tailor right now. I LOVED my old tailor, but he passed away and his son, who also ran the business, retired. They gave ownership to their seamstresses, who really messed up one of my favorite shirts and a pair of jeans, so I don't go there anymore. I need to find a replacement. Since then I have just been using my mom, but she won't be able to do more complicated alterations.

My PSL (perfect skirt length) for slimmer skirts is 20 inches (plus or minus a few). That skirt is 24" I think. With an A-line, I like to go a little longer so I don't look like a little girl, but that usually isn't too hard to do.

I have been to H&M twice in a week! I found few suiting skirts and the ones I did find were very boring though.

Maya, what about this one from Forever 21? It looks dead boring on the model but it would be super versatile and easy to funk up.
http://www.forever21.com/produ.....8;Page=all

Or this one--I know it's not so androgynous, but the print does have a great graphic edge. I guess it might require tucking, though.

Maya, I forget, is the Express skirt that you love un-hem-able? I know it has that ruffle detail, but I wonder if a good tailor could hem it anyway. How much too long is it? I know money is super tight, but it's soooo much better than any of the other options you posted, and you could wear it to the movies, to casual theatre events, etc. if you wore it with things like a graphic tee and vest. And then maybe you could thrift a blouse to pair with it, along with your H&M vest... just an idea. I can see how it would be scary to buy it, try to get it tailored, and then have it turn out to be a disaster, though. It's a great skirt.

Have you tried H&M for a skirt? I was there the other day and they had lots of suiting type stuff that was summer appropriate and looked surprisingly well made--definitely more than good enough to get you through some interviews.

Ana, I am signed up for Express emails but I don't think I have any coupons at the moment (unless I overlooked something). I do have Limited coupons, which is why I looked there.

I would need to get the price down to around $40, which seems unlikely. Express skirts are also too long for me, and if there is a hem detail I can't really alter them.

Dash, my lower half needs shortening, not lengthening, so I knew from the get-go that they wouldn't be flattering. Being short waisted AND busty is an endless battle. My entire torso is all boobs. Any kind of belting or waist emphasis just makes it worse. I think the tucked look is great for long waisted gals.

I know what you mean about thrifting. One of my go-to interview skirts is a thrifted AT skirt, but it's wool and tweed so not really suitable for summer. I just feel like what I'm looking for is too specific for me to have much luck with thrifting.

I feel you on high-waisted skirts. I feel like it should be flattering (lengthens the lower half! I have slim hips and thighs!), but a high waist gives me about two inches of visible torso below the boobs, and I just end up looking kind of squat and fat. Not a great look, despite it being right up my vintage-inspired alley.

Also, I totally scored a Banana Republic black A-line for $15 at my local thrift/consignment store, in perfect condition. I feel like they get a lot of the chain stuff, so it's a great way to find the more boring BR pieces that you wouldn't want to shell out full-price for.

I did see it on a rack, but it didn't really catch my eye, so I didn't look too closely at it. On the hanger it seemed kind of shapeless (but of course, that doesn't always mean anything). I would say personally that I like the Limited skirt with the waist detail, and if you're really after a plaid skirt with a larger print, the Express one is much better than the pleated Limited one. Do you get emails from Express? They're always sending out coupons. I have some, too, if you want. Just FYI.

Thanks for the validation Ana. I too never really cared much for the Limited but decided to give it a try when all else failed. I am very self conscious about tucking because high waisted skirts hit right below my chest. My upper half becomes nothing but boobs!

Did you happen to see the inverted pleat one? I wish it didn't have that silly pleat. But maybe it's not as bad as I think it is.

Maya, I just saw that skirt at The Limited this evening! Very cute in person. You could tuck a top into it and then wear a jacket or sweater over the top if you're self-conscious about tucking tops into skirts for some reason. The jacket that goes with the skirt is cute too. I was actually surprised by how many things I liked in there, since it's kind of hit or miss for me.

OK, I like this skirt too, but all that pretty detailing is for naught since I never tuck in my tops. Bearing that in mind, is it worth it? Better than the skirt with the inverted pleat? Anyone? I can't make decisions for myself anymore!

Kyle, you read my mind with the Modcloth skirts. I had already looked at both. I decided against the blue planet one as it's a knit and the ruffle is a little much for me. I want something crisper. More androgynous too, like a menswear fabrication.

The polkadot skirt is not quite what I'm looking for but is fabulous anyway. Wow. That strikes me as more of a party skirt though. When I say flounce, I mean more like this, with a ruffled bottom. Maybe flounce is the incorrect term:

http://www.express.com/catalog.....goryId=424

It's a flattering silhouette for me and also allows me more freedom of movement than most pencil skirts.

This is the kind of A-line I have in mindr:

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....=619419002

Structured and sleek.

This skirt is almost perfect but I'm just not sure about that front pleat and "tulip" shape on me:

Hi Maya:
This is not exactly a microcheck, but it would seem to be a versatile print. Too full?

This one is adorable, but not sure how short it actually is:

I am IN LOVE with this, and would snap it up this instant if they had it in a 6!!!

I am on a powershopping mission to get together a solid, functional wardrobe for both summer and winter interviews, and also for wearing to work (whether I have to or not). I would love to have a skirt for summer, as both my current ones are winter skirts. I feel most confident going into interviews in a fabulous skirt. I look much better than I do in pants.

I am very fond of the idea of some kind of print--particularly a micro check, houndstooth, or plaid. As always, my budget is sort of suffocating. Express has exactly what I want, but they are all too expensive for me right now. I know these are meant to be "investment" pieces, but there are two reasons I don't really want to spend a lot:

1) I can't.
2) My body size and shape has been changing for years and I don't know when it's finally going to level off, so I would rather wait until it stabilizes a bit. I don't think most employers are expecting a just-out-of-school 20something graphic designer to show up in an immaculately tailored suit or anything anyway.

My best skirt silhouette is undoubtedly a pencil, but I'm not so sure about wearing pencil skirts in the summer. I'd prefer a more breathable option. I absolutely adore flounce/fluted skirts, and fell in love with this one, but the price and the fact that it was too long turned me away:

http://www.express.com/catalog.....goryId=424

I'll wear anything though. The only definite exclusion is anything that is very full, or has lots of pleats and gathers. Those kinds of skirts look awful on me.

I checked Zara and Mango and found nothing of the sort. What other stores would be good places to look?
